BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH FEBRUARY 12, 2017 ALLIANCE OF BAPTISTS SUNDAY THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY BECOMING AWARE The Baptist tradition that I claim and that claims me began in religious dissent. Thomas Helwys, Baptist founder, resisted all attempts by government or state-privileged religions to coerce individual faith. In A Short Declaration of the Mystery of Iniquity (1612), he (Helwys) advised King James I that governments should permit all persons to choose their religion themselves, seeing they only must stand themselves before the judgment seat of God when it shall be no excuse for them to say, We were commanded or compelled to be of this religion by the king or by them that had authority from him. In 1636, when the Puritan religious establishment exiled Roger Williams, America s quintessential dissenter, into the howling wilderness of New England, he purchased land from the Narragansets, founding Providence (Rhode Island) the first colony to offer liberty to persons of differing religions or no religion at all. Williams called it a shelter for persons distressed of conscience communicating his purchase to loving friends who desired to take shelter here with me. Good citizenship, Williams said, was not limited to Christians, but Jews, Turks, (Muslims) or anti-christians could be peaceable and quiet subjects, loving and helpful neighbours. ~Bill J. We commit to create places of refuge and renewal. One: theological education characterized by reverence for biblical authority and respect for open inquiry and responsible scholarship; Many: We believe the educational nurture of faith matures us toward Jesus. We commit to honor wisdom and lifelong learning. One: the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ and the calling of God to all peoples to repentance and faith, reconciliation and hope, social and economic justice; Many: We believe the Gospel embodies the power to transform. We commit ourselves to equity, collegiality and diversity. One: the principle of a free church in a free state and the opposition to any effort either by church or state to use the other for its own purposes. Many: We believe in the separation of church and state. We commit to religious liberty for all people. May it be so! Prayer Upon the 30th Anniversary of the Alliance of Baptists God with us, for thirty years you have stoked a passion for mercy and justice among a band of Baptists who made covenant to embody your passion through our life together for the world in our time. Today we pause to remember, lament, celebrate and renew this call for just-relationships across all the boundaries that fragment us. From the beginning we glimpsed the Jesus vision of domination-free relationships between

4 men and women, whites and people of color, gay and straight, rich and poor, persons of differing faith traditions and nations, humans and non-human beings. Today we offer our gratitude for these three decades of Alliance witness to your Dream for creation. Here and there there have been astonishing breakthroughs of partnerships for which we give thanks. Today we lament that our prophetic, pastoral witness has been only here and there. We confess our hubris in believing this is our work to accomplish. God have mercy. Christ have mercy. Only by your power can we love as we covenanted to love. Only with your Spirit can we risk the vulnerability within every partnership. Only through Jesus do we see the path and energy that transcends barriers. Help us, God, to stand, to stand together on the borders of divisions pointing with our lives to an alternative non-violent way of living. Today, gracious Spirit, we dare to declare your need of us. Your movement of peace is limited by fear, blaming, and violence that saturates the air we breathe. You too are held back by forces of distrust and disregard. You need us. You need our partnership in the movement toward shalom. You need our hearts, our minds, our feet, our hands, our creativity. Today we, this Alliance network of Baptists, resolve anew to join your movement. Once again we vow to align ourselves with the arc that bends, however so slowly, toward justice. We say yes to the opportunities at hand for us to grasp with fresh commitment. We arise to sing the Song you have placed in our hearts. We arise with our bodies to dance to the Music of justice-love that never ends. We arise together along with other Alliance lovers to express the joy for what has been and the joy for what will be. BARBEE S AT BINKLEY Feb. 19: Bishop Gene Hatley and his congregation from Barbee s Chapel will come to worship and fellowship with us on February 19. We will share a covered dish lunch with them following the worship service. Please bring your favorite casserole, salad, fried chicken, dessert, etc. This is always a great time to renew friendships with our friends from Barbee s.

9 SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER AND TALENT SHOW Feb. 28, 6:00 pm, Fellowship Hall: Our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is led by the youth and includes a terrific Talent Show. All ages are encouraged to sign up in the narthex for the talent portion of the event. The cost for the meal (pancakes, waffles, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages) is $8.00 for 6th grade and older and $7.00 for 5th grade and younger. Proceeds from the meal will support Baptist Youth Camp scholarships. Meal begins at 6:00 pm, Talent Show begins at 6:45 pm. CHURCH COUNCIL RETREAT March 18, 8:30 am - Noon FAITH CONNECTIONS ON MENTAL ILLNESS 7 TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE Mar. 31, St. Thomas More: Registration is open for Transforming Lives: Overcoming Stigma in Mental Illness, a day-long program focused on the stereotypes, bias, stigma and silence faced by those dealing with mental illness. This conference will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill on Friday, March 31 from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Breakfast and lunch will be included. SHOW YOUR SOLIDARITY: A request was made to the Moderator to send a letter of support to the Muslim community in this area of the State. The request was referred to the Outreach Committee which has subsequently drafted a letter addressed to the Muslim and immigrant communities of the Triangle and you are invited to sign. In accordance with closely held Baptist beliefs, signing the letter is a matter of individual conscience. The letter itself will not be an official Binkley communication and will not identify signers as members of the church, only as supportive persons. Once signed, the letter will be sent to imams in the local areas as well as immigrant organizations (some of which receive contributions from the Binkley Outreach budget).
