1 BINKLEY BAPTIST CHURCH SUNDAY SCHEDULE 8:45 AM EARLY WORSHIP (1ST & 3RD SUNDAYS) 9:30 AM CHURCH SCHOOL 11:00 AM WORSHIP FEBRUARY 2015 NEWSLETTER CHURCH OFFICE HOURS M-F 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Shrove Tuesday and Lent Then and Now A Season for Prayer and Purpose Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving, when the faithful confessed their sins to the local priest and received forgiveness before the Lenten season began. As far back as 1000 AD, "to shrive" meant to hear confessions. Historically, Shrove Tuesday also marked the beginning of the 40-day Lenten fasting period when the faithful were forbidden to consume meat, butter, eggs or milk. However, if a family had a store of these foods, they all would go bad by the time the fast ended on Easter Sunday. What to do? Solution: use up the milk, butter and eggs no later than Shrove Tuesday. And so, with the addition of a little flour, the solution quickly presented itself...pancakes and lots of 'em. In France, (as well as here in the US - or more famously - in New Orleans) it's known as Fat Tuesday, which culminates the Mardi Gras festival with boisterous celebrations just before the Lenten season. During Lent at Binkley, members and friends are encouraged to center themselves in God s presence through prayer, disciplines of your choosing (fasting from certain foods, activities, etc.) and commitments to service or support for God s creation. Some people pledge to write a note of support to a different person every week, while others gather food to support those who live with hunger every day. The Lenten promises you make are entirely up to you. All of these promises are helpful in connecting us to Jesus the Christ who is our servant leader and redeemer. At Binkley, our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 17 is led by the youth of the church and includes a Talent Show. All ages are encouraged to sign up on Dale s door for the talent portion of our night together. The cost for the meal (pancakes, waffles, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages) is $7.00 for 6th grade and above and $6.00 for 5th grade and below. Any net proceeds from the meal will support our Baptist Youth Camp scholarships. The meal begins at 5:30pm and is served until approximately 6:15 pm. Please join us for this night of fellowship through food, fun and frivolity! On Ash Wednesday at Binkley we have two types of services where you may worship God and receive ashes on your hand or forehead. The first opportunity is an intimate gathering of two to three at a time scheduled in fifteen minute segments beginning at 5:00 pm. Dale and Stephanie lead the children and parents in a time of dialogue, song and prayer as well as an explanation of the ashes. Please sign up on the sheet on Dale s door by Tuesday night at the Pancake Supper. This gathering occurs in our prayer chapel. The second opportunity for a more formal service of ashes takes place in the Sanctuary at 7:30 pm. Marcus McFaul and the Chancel Choir led by Daniel provide leadership for this worship time. Singing, scripture readings, prayer, special music and the placement of ashes are incorporated into the gathering. We encourage you to take part in one of these services to prepare for the season of Lent.

2 PAGE 2 FEBRUARY 2015 NEWSLETTER STEWARDSHIP UPDATE Guess what! Four more people remembered to turn in their pledges in the last two days! And here s another thing, it s still not too late for you either. If you have been sorting out paper after the mad holiday rush and turned up your uncompleted Binkley pledge card, you can still turn it in to Duane and help us make our goal. As you will soon read elsewhere, the Church Council adopted a budget at its meeting on Monday night. In that budget, they anticipate that we will reach at least last year s pledge level, which we have not yet done. But we are so close! As of Tuesday, we have committed 94% of the pledge goal for Please be a hero and make a pledge as soon as possible. 3 FEBRUARY 2015 NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 This wonderful blessing is from John O Donohue s book To Bless the Space Between Us. I offer it to you as both my prayerful hope and confident belief that the arrival of a new dawn at Binkley is on its way. The last lines of the blessing make it clear that this isn t a quick or easy journey but the more faithfully you can endure here (the interim time), the more refined your heart will become for your arrival into the new dawn. May it be so. When near the end of day, life has drained Out of light, and it is too soon For the mind of night to have darkened things, No place looks like itself, loss of outline Makes everything look strangely in-between, Unsure of what has been, or what might come. In this wan light, even trees seem groundless. In a while it will be night, but nothing Here seems to believe the relief of darkness. You are in this time of the interim Where everything seems withheld. The path you took to get here has washed out; The way forward is still concealed from you. The old is not old enough to have died away; The new is still too young to be born. You cannot lay claim to anything; In this place of dusk, Your eyes are blurred; And there is no mirror. FROM OUR INTENTIONAL INTERIM MINISTER Everyone else has lost sight of your heart And you can see nowhere to put your trust; You know you have to make your own way through. As far as you can, hold your confidence. Do not allow confusion to squander This call which is loosening Your roots in false ground, That you might come free From all you have outgrown. What is being transfigured here in your mind, And it is difficult and slow to become new. The more faithfully you can endure here, The more refined your heart will become For your arrival in the new dawn. FROM THE GROUNDS COMMITTEE Mulching and Munching! Please join the grounds committee for a morning of munching on bagels and coffee followed by mulching the Binkley grounds. We are planning to mulch the area alongside the Harris Teeter entrance on Friday, February 20, if weather cooperates, beginning by 8:30. With enough volunteers, this can be a light work day for everyone. Please me to say you can offer an hour or more as soon as possible. Skip the gym and work out with Binkley on February 20th! Please contact Janet O Neal, grounds chairperson, at joneal23@nc.rr.com or Thank you. Winter News Winter is a time when the Binkley landscape rests for winter but is that really what is happening? In fact, new plantings are busy putting down roots near the entrance to the education wing. Daffodil bulbs planted by the children are starting to push up green shoots in the courtyard. The maple tree at the church entrance shows off its beautiful red bark. Birds are checking out our boxes and trees for nesting sites. The apricot tree at the Meals on Wheels entrance is preparing to bloom. The Lenten roses near the choir room and labyrinth are starting to bloom. The witch hazel along the entrance driveway will be showing its yellow winter flowers soon. There seems to be lots of activity during winter s rest! Nature offers us an example. Take a walk around Binkley and enjoy the winter beauty. Best wishes in the New Year from the Grounds Committee! PRIMETIMERS: 2/11 We are delighted that Howard Lee, having been cancelled in January due to weather, is available to present our February program. We will meet at 12:30 on Wednesday, 2/11, in the lounge for lunch ($8) followed by the program. A signup sheet is located on Dale Osborne's door, or contact the office at office@binkleychurch.org. If you wish to come but don t want to eat, sign up anyway so we can have a chair available for you. For more information contact Barbara Harris at barbharris99@gmail.com.

4 FEBRUARY 2015 NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 MUSIC NOTES Children s Choir Workshop Weekend: It is official the Children s Choir Workshop Weekend is happening February 27- March 1. The weekend has several goals. First, this weekend is to act as a catalyst for the energy, involvement, and enthusiasm we need to revitalize our Children s Music Program, while also being an outreach to families in Chapel Hill. Second, it is to engage our current children and families, as well as, newcomers in such a way that they are compelled to return not only to Children s Choir, but to be more fully involved in the rich life we share here at BBC. The weekend will find at its center a Saturday morning and early afternoon full of music education, games, crafts, and of course, food. We will begin on Friday night the 27 th with a kick-off party for the children and their parents, and the weekend will culminate with the glorious result of the children singing on Sunday morning March 1 during 11:00 am worship. We are fortunate to have two guest clinicians coming from Atlanta, Georgia, to lead this workshop. While the Church Council has been very generous in regard to funding the event (which is free to all participants), we need volunteers to prepare some of the food/beverages, and also to be chaperones, craft workers, logistics helpers, and most importantly, friendly and engaging greeters for our guests. Contact Daniel if you are willing to help, but above all please keep our Music Ministry leaders and volunteers in your hearts and prayers as we prepare for this exciting event. Dinner, Children s Choir, and Adult Education: Historically speaking, when Children s Choirs/Music Programs are most successful they usually center around an evening where there is a dinner, and where there are educational and fellowship opportunities for parents, while children are rehearsing and learning about music. GOOD NEWS: This is typically our pattern each spring and autumn, and this year during Lent will be no exception. Thanks to the Christian Formation and Outreach Committees, each Wednesday during Lent there will be a dinner at 5:30 followed by a time of learning that coincides with Children s Choir. Let s be thinking about how we can maintain this pattern after Easter Day. Workshop Clinicians: Colleen Keith Kingston and Kristen Gwaltney Colleen Kingston has been teaching music in the public schools of metro Atlanta for 18 years. She earned a B.A. in Music from Emory University, but her music education began long before college as a member of a community children's choir, the Atlanta Young Singers. She has continued to sing in choirs as an adult, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Britten Choir, the Atlanta Singers, and as a Staff Singer in the choirs of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Her participation in choral music has taken Colleen all over the world: to 16 countries and counting. She currently serves as the Assistant for Children's Music at St. Luke's, where she directs a children's choir and leads a music exploratory class for very young children. Kristen Gwaltney enjoys making music with a variety of organizations around Atlanta. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music Education, she began teaching elementary school music. During the first years of her career, she completed a Master of Arts in Music. She sang Benjamin Britten s War Requiem with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and with the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin, Germany. She has traveled with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus and Chamber Chorus to the Ravinia Festival in Chicago and Carnegie Hall in New York. She was a Staff Singer for Peachtree Road United Methodist Church Chancel Choir during their residency with Southwark Cathedral in London and has also served as a Staff Singer for Peachtree Christian Church. Kristen currently is the Director of the Carol Choir (1st and 2nd graders) at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and also teaches music at Lilburn Elementary School, where she directs a large chorus, an Orff ensemble and teaches classical guitar.
