1 Binkley Baptist Church Sunday Schedule 8:45 am Early Worship, Chapel Weekly 9:30 am Church School 11:00 am Worship, Sanctuary Church Office Hours M-Th 8:30 am - 4:00 pm Fri 8:30 am - 3:00 pm SHROVE TUESDAY AND LENT Invitation to Taking Up and Letting Go Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving, when the faithful confessed their sins to the local priest and received forgiveness before the Lenten season began. As far back as 1000 AD, "to shrive" meant to hear confessions. Historically, Shrove Tuesday also marked the beginning of the 40-day Lenten fasting period when the faithful were forbidden by the church to consume meat, butter, eggs or milk. However, if a family had a store of these foods they all would go bad by the time the fast ended on Easter Sunday. What to do? Solution: use up the milk, butter and eggs no later than Shrove Tuesday. And so, with the addition of a little flour, the solution quickly presented itself in... pancakes, lots of 'em. In France, (as well as here in the US - or more famously - in New Orleans) it's known as Fat Tuesday which culminates the Mardi Gras festival with boisterous celebrations just before the Lenten season. During Lent at Binkley, members and friends are encouraged to center themselves in God s presence through prayer, disciplines of your choosing (fasting from certain foods, activities, etc.) and commitments to service or support for God s creation. Some people pledge to write a note of support to a different person every week while others gather food to support those who live with hunger every day. The Lenten promises you make are entirely up to you. All of these promises are helpful in connecting us to Jesus the Christ who is our servant leader and teacher. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper! February 9, 6:00 pm, Fellowship Hall At Binkley, our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9 is led by the youth of the church and includes a terrific Talent Show. All ages are encouraged to sign up on Dale s door or in the narthex for the talent portion of our night together. The cost for the meal (pancakes, waffles, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages) is $8.00 for 6th grade and above and $7.00 for 5th grade and below. Any net proceeds from the meal will support our Baptist Youth Camp scholarships. The meal begins at 6:00 pm and is served until approximately 6:45 pm when the Talent Show begins. Please join us for this night of fellowship through food, fun and frivolity! February 10 NOON & 7:00 pm The Lenten journey to Easter begins with Ash Wednesday on February 10. There are two opportunities for worship at Binkley that day---noon in the Chapel (service will last 20 minutes in time for Primetimers at 12:30) and at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Both services include the imposition of ashes. The later service at 7pm features choir, organ, harp, and sermon from Dr. McFaul. Please stay tuned for more information on Lent offerings at Binkley, coming soon!

3 PAGE 3 5-WEEK LENTEN SERIES BEGINS FEBRUARY 17! Join us on Wednesday night, February 17, for a simple supper, followed by an in-depth conversation on small groups. Joining a circle of companions around faith, vocation, and interest can be life-changing. Why is that true? What kind of group (topic, process) might you imagine? How can we realize such groups at Binkley, knowing how hard it is in our fast-paced culture--yet knowing that they can "save us, and daily"! Meal, 5:30-6:00 pm; Program, 6-7:00 pm, in the Lounge. INTERGENERATIONAL SAVE-THE-DATE: All ages welcome Friday, February 12, in the Lounge for pizza and games! 6-8:00 pm. Pizza and beverage provided. Bring a dessert and a game to share. Just call the office or Stephanie Ford by noon on Friday (2/12) (and indicate pizza favorites). A lot of fun for all! June Celtic Voices Women s Retreat April 1-3, 2016 You are invited to join your Binkley women friends for a time of spiritual kinship, laughter, prayer, and rest at The Trinity Center (Salter Path, NC). We'll be exploring the gifts of Celtic spirituality and learning from one another. Registration forms available, February 7. Please be in touch with Stephanie Ford if you are needing a scholarship. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Co-chairs Bob Phillips and Charles Coble invite Binkley members and attendees to the organizational meeting of the Earth Ministries Committee, Monday, February 1 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Binkley Church Library. We have some exciting possibilities on the horizon and we invite your participation. We will be discussing a solar energy initiative, family nature hikes and field trips, invited discussion leaders, shared readings and other activities focused on our shared commitment to a cleaner more sustainable future and a joy for the outdoors.

4 PAGE 4 CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES FOR ADULTS, SPRING :30-10:45 am Join Binkley friends on Sunday mornings for meaningful learning and sharing. On Sunday, February 7, all are invited to the Lounge for coffee and breakfast snacks for a Church School Launch. You will hear introductions to each of the classes and have the opportunity to ask key questions. Classes begin meeting on February 14. Bible Stories You've Never Heard This Way Sunroom This class will consider Bible stories that may be familiar, even favorites, in the hopes to deepen and explore new angles. Micheal Palmer, a New Testament scholar, and Allen Davidson, a church history scholar, will lead conversations that will surprise, educate, and amuse you. Bring your Bible, an open mind, as well as ideas for stories you'd like to know more about. Exploring the Enneagram Room 16 The Enneagram is a model used spiritual direction that involves identifying oneself as leading with one of nine interconnected personality types. Insights about each type are also connected to biblical concepts. Hopefully, we can view our personality patterns and their distortions with compassion in order to live more fully into wholeness and Grace. Counting on group participation, Bob Phillips will lead the 6-week class. Nooma Larry McManus and Pamela Nielsen are facilitating a class using Rob Bell s Nooma series a set of short films that explore our world from a perspective of Jesus, offering a series of questions that open discussion. NOOMA is an invitation to search, question, and join the discussion. Each session stands on its own, so come to one or all. Rob Bell is an articulate pastor, author, and speaker; his book Love Wins was a NY Times bestseller. ESL Bible Study Class Room 17 This class is designed for those learning English as a second language and interested in Bible Study. Participants will learn vocabulary and share from their own cultures and histories about why the stories are important. Citizenship issues are also addressed. Maria Palmer is your teacher. Mindful Parenting Room 18 Each week, the group discusses ideas about parenting from current resources. The simple format includes the following: prayer, brief check-in, summary of the book or article, and discussion on prepared questions. We welcome novice and experienced parents alike looking to share laughter, support, and hope in the journey of parenting. Megan and Miles Highsmith are the co-facilitators.

The event is free of charge and is open to the community. The workshop weekend is intended to provide an opportunity for children who love to sing to learn more about music and the voice. New to this year s workshop will be revealing the name and introducing some music to a children s musical that will be produced here at Binkley later this year. Contact Daniel at daniel@binkleychurch.org for more information. NO Children s Choir Rehearsal on Ash Wednesday CCWW 2015, fun for parents, too! 6 PAGE 6 Chapel Hill Youth Choir Workshop Report On Tuesday, January 19 th a group from the Binkley Church Youth Choir spent the day in a workshop at the United Church of Chapel Hill. The guest clinician was Clark Sorrells from First Baptist Church, Asheville, and our very own Daniel Cherrix served as accompanist. Over 40 youth from the area attended the workshop, and the day culminated in a 45 minute concert that was open to the community. Music Notes YOUTH CHOIR NEWS!!! The Youth Choir will be attending Festival by the Sea in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, March 4-6, The Festival by the Sea music festivals, begun in 2000, grew out of a need to provide high quality music festivals for Cooperative Baptist Fellowship churches. This has grown into an ecumenical series of festivals encompassing Youth Choirs and Adult Choirs. Noted clinicians provide leadership for the festivals helping participating choirs achieve levels of performance not normally attained in the local church setting. Choirs leave challenged to work harder and strive for greater achievement in their local music programs. One of the hallmark features of these festivals has been the deeply spiritual worship experiences that have been designed to coincide with the music that has been prepared for the festivals. Not only do participants learn to sing but they learn to integrate their music into a worship framework that has meaning. Additionally, the festivals have provided an opportunity for participants to meet others with similar music interests and build relationships that will last for years to come. For more information please contact Daniel Cherrix or visit festivalbythesea.org. 7 PAGE 7 Music Notes, continued SISTERS VOICES AT BINKLEY On Thursday, January 14th Binkley Church had the great pleasure of hosting more than 150 people, including many Binkley members, in our Sanctuary for the Sisters Voices Winter Concert. It was a fantastic concert. The Music Ministry is grateful for our continued relationship with this wonderful group, and for the opportunity to serve as one venue for their continued success. We gladly anticipate welcoming them back this spring to a Sunday morning worship service. GRETZ/LEE CONCERT UPDATE Due to the winter weather the weekend of January 24th, the Gretz/Lee duo was unable to join us for worship and offer their concert at Binkley. We look forward to the next time Steve and Leslie travel South, and hope to be a host church for them then. You can still experience the music and message of the Gretz/Lee duo virtually at INTERFAITH COUNCIL (IFC) FOR SOCIAL SERVICES RECOGNITION The Christ centered ministries (Food, Shelter, Compassionate Service during times of Crisis) of the IFC have supported our community for decades. One important part of those ministries draws many Binkley volunteers into the IFC Community Kitchen. The following members serve either lunch or dinner every 4th Wednesday: Tim Bradshaw,Ed Davis, Sherri Davis, Joy Fewel, Tom Fewel, April Kemper, Jo Lea, Lynn O'Brien (Our IFC Liaison), Susan Read, David Resnik, Sue Wallace, Billy Barnes, Caryl Price, Caryl Fulcher, Larry Nielsen, Dave Bruckenstein, Dale Osborne, Betty Raft, Marlene Dickison, Fred Schroeder. YOUTH DISCIPLESHIP ADVENTURE BEGINS ON FEBRUARY 23 All 7 th grade and older youth are invited to participate in the 2016 Discipleship Class. The class is led by Dale and Stephanie. Each of the 6 sessions will begin with a bring your own supper at 6 pm followed by learning opportunities that run until 7:45 pm. The learning opportunities center on our relationship to Jesus as followers of his teachings, our relationships to one another in the class and our relationship to Binkley Baptist Church and the Church Universal. We will enrich our lives together through prayer, service and learning over 6 consecutive Tuesday nights in February and April. Class participants will also explore their own thoughts about baptism and joining Binkley as followers of Jesus. Join us and grow in Christ s love. SOUPER BOWL OF CARING The annual tradition will occur on February 7. The Souper Bowls of Caring have been taking place in houses of worship across America for over 20 years. Two large soup pots will be in the narthex on February 7. Binkley youth will soupervise the pots. Each pot will represent a participant in the Super Bowl (a football game). This year one pot will represent the Carolina Panthers while the other will represent the Denver Broncos. Congregants are encouraged to place any amount of money in the pot of the football team they hope will win the game. The best news is that the local IFC Food Pantry will receive all the money we raise. They will use the money to buy needed groceries to be distributed to hungry families in our community.

9 PAGE 9 KINSHIP EXTENDED AND GOSPEL JOY: THE PHYUT SIU & ENH ROCHAM FAMILY Phyut and her grandson, Jason, meeting for the first time at RDU Imagine for a moment that you, a grandmother, are meeting your 5-year-old grandson and your 6-month-old grandson for the first time! This was the case for Phyut Siu, two nights after Christmas 2015, when she and her husband, Enh, welcomed their eldest daughter, Nanh, and her two young sons at RDU. Bravely accompanied from Vietnam by the Siu family s second daughter, Hanna Nanh showed her relief in her face, in her smile! Many of us at Binkley haves seen the Siu family weekly at worship, but may know little about the obstacles this faithful family has faced. In 2005, Enh Rocham, the father, and eldest son, Haih, came to us from a refugee camp, having escaped religious persecution in Vietnam. Five years later, the rest of the family joined Enh and Haih here, including Phyut (mom), daughter Hanna, second son, Hai, and youngest daughter, Yeu. After being in the United States, Phyut also gave birth to her youngest son in 2014, Justin. However, in 2010 (when her family of origin immigrated to the US) Nanh, the Siu s eldest daughter, pregnant with her son, Sujin, remained in Vietnam with her husband, Veo. This family is not ethnically Vietnamese, but rather are of the Montagnard people of the Vietnamese highlands, and have been Christian for generations. They faced persecution in Vietnam over many years and fled to the United States for their lives and well-being. Binkley provided a haven of welfare and support for their amazing passage to freedom. In 2015, the situation for Nanh, their eldest daughter who remained in Vietnam, became dire. Nanh s husband, veo, was increasing being harassed and beaten. He tried to escape and was captured, and is now facing a 7-year jail sentence. Nanh was also being harassed. In addition to political persecution, she has faced difficult medical problems and additional complications related to her pregnancy with her second son, Jason. Thankfully, she delivered Jason successfully in June 2015, in Vietnam, but remained very ill. Because of her status, she could not receive adequate treatment in Vietnam. Through the vision of the Refugee Resettlement Committee at Binkley and with the fortuitous, gracious aid of two Binkley members-- Alice Glover, an immigration attorney, and David Price, U.S. Representative Nanh, Sujin, and Jason came to us at Christmastide, December 27, on humanitarian parole. The next step is to get Nanh refugee status. Nanh is also seeking baptism at Binkley this spring, as well as the dedication of her two sons. Our prayers continue for Veo, her husband, as he faces imprisonment and the loneliness for his beloved family. Nanh Siu, eldest daughter and newly arrived from Vietnam, with youngest daughter, Yeu Siu, looking on.
