As we consider launching a new church year, I invite all of us to welcome the many different "songs and songbirds" that call our church their home away from home. The songs of children will be heard again in Church School at 9:30 am every Sunday and in Early Worship beginning on September 21 at 8:45 am in the chapel. The songs of youth will be heard in Church School, in Youth Choir at 5 pm each Sunday and in Youth Group at 6 pm. The songs of adults in the Chancel Choir will pour forth in worship at 11 am each Sunday and at 7:30 pm each Wednesday night as they rehearse. Younger children's voices will rehearse on Wednesday nights at 6 pm in preparation for singing praise to God on selected Sundays. The Bell Choir will resume its song in rehearsals every Thursday at 5:30 pm. Adult Church School classes will resume on the 7th at 9:30 am as well. Perhaps they too will sing a new song. Much of the aforementioned singing will be led by our talented organist and friend, Bo Lloyd, as he steps in to lead the Chancel Choir. The children, youth and bells will be led by Binkley member and new Wake County teacher's assistant, Jenny Walters. Both of them will be keeping our many songbirds in good form as we await the arrival of whomever God sends as our new full time Music Director. Other songbirds will resume or continue their singing in September as the Old Time Gospel Band continues to practice on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 9:15 am, and the Primetimers (for adults in the prime of their lives) have their first lunch time meal and presentation on September 10. Many hands, feet and voices are needed to keep the musical rhythm of Binkley Baptist Church in good form. When a teacher or staff member seeks your help this semester, please consider helping the songs of love and faith and justice to go on. Sing out also with prayers for our Music Search and Transition Committees as they seek new leadership at Binkley's door. 3 PAGE 3 GROUNDS COMMITTEE UPDATE The Transition Team has been solidly at work over the past few weeks, working around various vacation and personal schedules. We have identified five candidates for the position of Intentional Interim Minister. We have received from all of them profiles, letters of interest, and responses to some questions f r o m t h e T r a n s i t i o n Team. We have sent a second round of requests for information from several of the candidates. Transition Team members have listened We are grateful for Bobby Wagoner, who has served on the grounds committee for at least four years and has decided to retire as an active committee member. He has been our chief irrigation consultant, maple expert and general handy man, and we will miss him. We are also grateful to welcome Carol Kille to our team. Carol has much gardening experience and isn't afraid to pull weeds! It's a delight to have her company. It takes a lot of people in addition to the grounds committee to keep Binkley looking good. The lovely seasonal planters out front are Sherri Davis's labor of love. Linda Vaughn recently spruced up the Binkley sign plantings. Charles Coble, Art Sherwood, Roal Carlson and Bill McNairy and Tim Bradshaw can all take a bow for keeping the grass mowed. Patty Michaels continues to care for the beautiful courtyard garden. Young VBS gardeners planted zinnias by the education wing door. Thanks to all of you for your support. TRANSISTION COMMITTEE UPDATE to a variety of sermons available over the web from a number of the candidates. Next week we will further refine our ranking of candidates and begin to schedule either Skype or conference call interviews. We continue to appreciate the prayers of the congregation. COURTYARD UPDATE Are you awed by the colors and textures of nature? Do you marvel at the changes that the four seasons bring? Then please join me as a caretaker for the Courtyard Garden, which makes its home between the church and the preschool playground. I have the honor and privilege to assist Binkley s Minister Emeritus, Bob Seymour, with the care of the garden and would like someone to join me this fall in the garden. MUSIC NEWS: SAVE THE DATES Everyone is invited to the Senior Voice Recital of Steven Thomason, the Interim Chancel Choir Director over the summer. It is at Campbell University's Butler Chapel on Thursday, September 18th, at 8:00 PM. Doors open at 7:30. Selections will include pieces from Handel's Messiah, Bach's Magnificat, Vaughan Williams's Five Mystical Songs, and many more! Bo Lloyd, Binkley s Church Organist, will be performing a Recital on Saturday, 10/11 from 7-9 pm in the Church Sanctuary. Refreshments will be served. More details in future publications. BINKLEY GOLF OPEN The much anticipated Occasional Binkley Fall Open will be played Tuesday, September 16, at the Southwick Golf Course near Swepsonville. We will gather at 9:30 for team selection. The first tee time is 10 am. The Open format is Captain s Choice with randomly se- lected teams competing for a Binkley Open Trophy specially crafted by Fred Schroeder. This fun-filled and mildly competitive golf outing features an enjoyable day in the sun, friendly companionship, golfer friendly rules, and a few prizes for closest to the hole, longest made putt and longest drives for men, women and those over 75. FUN is the name of this outing for all Binkley and friends golfers, those who wish they were, and those who want to be. The Open fee is $30 (make checks to Joe Clontz and can be paid at the Tournament) and includes green fees, cart and a hot dog and drink at the turn. 4 PAGE 4 A NEW SEASON OF SUNDAY SCHOOL On Launch Sunday, 9/7, all ages will gather in the Sanctuary at 9:30 a.m. for a time of singing, prayer, and announcements. Adults will then move to the Lounge for a lively introduction to the four classes being offered. Breakfast snacks and coffee will be served there. Please join us! Below are descriptions of the classes and their locations, beginning 9/14: GATEWAYS Sunroom Tammerie Day and Sheryl Scrimsher, facilitators This class considers the interplay of faith and experience, spirit and practice. Each week, a topic or issue is presented (by the facilitators or guest presenters), followed by an experiential activity related to the theme, and coalescing in a discussion arising out of the activity. Each class member s input is welcomed! Topics include beauty, embodied spirituality, spiritual disciplines for activists, illness as a spiritual journey, and discernment, among others. Beginning November 23 rd, the class will follow the same format, but will turn to Advent as its overarching focus. IT S NOT JUST ONE WAY Room 17 Tracy Berger, Heather Rabalais, Susan Read, and Rhonda Szostak, facilitators Are you a recent member of Binkley, perhaps a perspective member, or member of longer standing who has an interest in learning about the personal faith journeys of folks in our community? Do you have a desire to feel a deeper personal and spiritual connection with those whom you worship with each Sunday? If so, please join us for a time of sharing and discussion as we engage and appreciate our many different spiritual paths at Binkley. LANTERNS OF SPIRITUALITY & SOCIAL ACTION: Desmond Tutu, Abraham Heschel, & Sallie McFague Collins Kilburn, teacher Lounge This class explores the lives and thoughts of three fascinating theologians and justice seekers. Desmond Tutu, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, was one of the most prominent and eloquent voices in the South African anti-apartheid movement, inspiring a vision for theological hope and healing. Abraham Heschel ( ), Polish-born Rabbi, educated in Berlin, was the leading Jewish theologian and philosopher of the 20th century in the U.S., bringing insights from the Hebrew scriptures and Hasidism to his writings. He was the most visible Jewish voice in the civil rights and anti-vietnam war movements. Sallie McFague is an American ecofeminist Christian theologian, best known for her analysis of how metaphor lies at the heart of how we may speak about God. She has applied this approach in particular to ecological justice. MINDFUL PARENTING Room 18 Shared facilitation Parenting is a vocation that is both a joyous spiritual journey and also a challenging one. Information abounds on the topic, but it can be difficult to discern what is most helpful. It s important to be able to talk with other parents and grandparents about what we are learning. Each week, this class discusses ideas about parenting from current resources. The simple format includes the following: prayer, brief check-in, summary of the book or article, and discussion on prepared questions. Parents, grandparents, and anyone are welcome! After all, we "parent" ourselves, too! WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERIES: THE KALEIDOSCOPE OF BINKLEY Beginning September 17, our Wednesday Night Series will explore the multifaceted, unique faith community that makes up Binkley. We ll learn about the founding vision, hear from folks who grew up in Binkley, hear personal stories illustrating our diversity, and more. The series will span five weeks: 9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, and 10/15. Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. ($6 adults, $3 children), followed by the program from 6-7:00 p.m. Sept 17 Dr. Robert Seymour, Binkley s first minister will share reflections about the early years, locating its founding story in the context of the early 60s.

5 PAGE 5 NEW SPARKS IN SUNDAY SCHOOL As a kid, I remember that feeling of anticipation every fall: Wonder what my new teacher will be like? Wonder who the other kids in class are? And because a little boredom had set in by the end of summer (never to be admitted to my parents, of course!) I looked forward to the routine + newness of a school year beginning. Well at Binkley, we are bringing that equation of familiarity and novelty to elementary-aged Church School this fall. Drawing upon something similar to the block rotation schedule of Vacation Bible School, we are adopting a rotation model in Church School for grades 1-5 (with a minirotation within the classroom for the PreSchool- Kindergarten class). Children will gather for the familiar Opening Assembly, where in addition to check-in, singing, and prayer, they will hear a Bible story. Then, children grades 1-3 will head to a workshop, perhaps drama; while children grades 4-5 head to different workshop, say art. The workshops are each designed to reinforce, deepen, and clarify aspects of the story. Depending on the week, a workshop might be one of the following: science, Bible games and activities, music, art, cooking, or drama. Thus, we ll focus on one story over three weeks, exploring new insights as we go, using right and left brain together, in our discovery. For children, we hope you find yourself looking forward to Sunday mornings: Wonder what workshop this week? The older kids got to make cool looking mobiles last week; maybe we ll get to make them this week. For parents, we hope that you will find important stories of the Bible taking root in the hearts and minds of your children. OUR WIDER COMMUNITY SPIRITUALITY CLASSES FALL 2014 IFC RESULTS Several area churches, including Binkley, work together as part of the Friends of Christ School of Christian Spirituality. Fall courses begin in mid-september, including the introductory core course that meets on Thursday mornings at Westminster Presbyterian Church and on Monday evenings at Christ United Methodist Church. The eight-week classes are a wonderful way to grow in faith, and the cost is minimal ($25 per semester, plus books). The Food Pantry distributed 16,828 bags of groceries and 867 holiday meals. Staff and volunteers conducted 6,049 interviews for Crisis Intervention and 968 households received financial assistance to prevent homelessness. HomeStart provided 13,424 nights of safe shelter to 202 women and 83 children. Community House provided 17,196 nights of safe shelter to 373 men. The Robert Nixon Free Clinic for the Homeless provided 356 residents with medical care, 158 residents with mental health care, & dispensed 493 prescriptions. Our community contributed 40,197 volunteer hours and in-kind food donations valued at $558,736.
