THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH MARCH 4, 2018 THE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT BECOMING AWARE Give us courage to depart the pretend world of euphemism, to call things by their right name, to use things for their right use, to love our neighbor as you love us. Overwhelm our fearful need to distort, that we may fall back into your truth-telling about us, that we may be tellers of truth and practitioners of truth. We pray in the name of the One whom you have filled with grace and truth. Amen. Walter Brueggemann, Awed to Heaven, Rooted on Earth GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. PRELUDE INTROIT Teach Me, O Lord, the Way of Thy Statutes Thomas Attwood Teach me, O Lord, the way of the statutes, and I shall keep it unto the end. Psalm 119:33 * HYMN Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation see insert

* LITANY OF RECONCILIATION One: All have sinned and have come short of the glory of God. The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class, One: The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own, One: The greed which exploits the labors of men and women and lays waste the Earth, One: Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others, One: Our indifference to the plight of the homeless and the refugee, One: The lust which dishonors the bodies of men, women, and children, One: The pride which leads us to trust in ourselves, and not in God, One: Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you. * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST One: The peace of Christ be with you! Many: And also with you! Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality and peace. * SONG OF PENITENCE Kyrie WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Please pass the Friendship Registers found on each row. Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley! Stephanie Ford

LISTENING THE PSALM LESSON Psalm 19 * THE GOSPEL LESSON John 2:13-22 One: This is the Gospel of Christ. Many: Thanks be to God. * HYMN ON THE LESSON When Christ Went to the Temple LLANGLOFFAN When Christ went to the Temple to worship God one day, He entered through the courtyard where anyone could pray. That court was for the nations and all could enter in. But Jesus found a market, a shameful robbers' den. There, cattle, sheep and pigeons were sold for sacrifice, And moneychangers shouted of quality and price. Outsiders could not enter the inner courts for prayer. Their only place to worship was in the courtyard there. When prayer gave way to profit, and pride closed many doors, The Lord cried out in anger and made a whip of cords. He shooed the sheep and cattle and scattered pigeons, too. God's house was for all people not for a chosen few. O God, you love the nations and call us all to pray. Forgive us when our worship turns other folk away. As Christ, in loving protest, fought prejudice and pride, May we who follow Jesus now welcome all inside. Carolyn Gillette SERMON Remembered Signs Marcus McFaul AROUND THE TABLE THE GREAT THANKSGIVING One: The Lord be with you. Many: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. Many: We lift them up to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Many: It is right to give our thanks and praise. One: Let us pray And we pray the prayer that Jesus taught us, saying:

All: Our Mother Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO THE TABLE Give Me Jesus arr. Moses Hogan In the morning, when I rise, give me Jesus. You can have all this world, just give me Jesus. Dark midnight was my cry, give me Jesus. When I come to die, give me Jesus. You can have all this world, just give me Jesus. WORDS OF INSTITUTION CELEBRATION OF COMMUNION UNISON READING OF THE BINKLEY COVENANT Professing our faith in Jesus Christ, we covenant with God and one another to live together as members of this church in obedience to God's will as it has been and shall be made known to us. As part of the body of Christ throughout the world, we promise to express our faithfulness to Christ in love for one another and for the whole of God's creation. The Spirit of God assisting us, we further promise to attend the services of this congregation, observe its sacraments, support its mission to all people, practice faithful stewardship of our possessions and be conscientious caretakers of the Earth, endeavoring always to be a fruitful body of Christians. GIVING & RESPONDING OFFERTORY * DOXOLOGY Please sign with the leader or simply sing. OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * AN INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP If you wish to become a member of Binkley Baptist Church, you are invited to come forward during the hymn to be welcomed and received. The Journey of Faith To a journey God has called us, To a life of love and hope; In the light and in the shadow, God is with us as we go. HYFRYDOL hymn continues on the next page

Faith that grows with each new challenge, Trust that leads through paths unknown, We, as pilgrims, walk together In the journey to our home. For the strength of faithful witness Lived though days of joy and tears; And the gift of grace sufficient For the ever-flowing years; For the richness of Your mercy To Thee, Lord, we give You our praise. May our lives reflect Your glory Til the close of all our days. Go we now to be God s people, Go we now our faith to live. Help us learn from one another Faith to keep, a faith to give. Go we now of life s great journey, Go we now, but not alone. With God s people, by God s Spirit, Faith leads forward, faith leads on. Peggy Haymes * RECEPTION & INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS 341 * BLESSING & BENEDICTION * BENEDICTION RESPONSE Amen McNeil Robinson We are fortunate at Binkley to have intentionally chosen from our founding to follow the Liturgical Year. Each liturgical season brings with it specific patterns and practices; rhythms, if you will, that allow us to follow more fully in the way of Jesus with head and heart and body. During the season of Lent things change drastically. The singing or saying of "alleluia" is silenced, the paraments (the hangings on the pulpit, lectern, and communion table) change to purple or to unbleached linen, and music takes on a more somber and penitential nature. In some Christian traditions instrumental music, especially organ music, is completely "given up" for Lent. This year at Binkley we will "give up" a portion of the organ music that we normally hear each Sunday by omitting the voluntary. The closing voluntary will return on Easter Day. Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table are given by the Parks family in honor of Vivian and Gabe's Grandma. She turned 76 yesterday (March 3). Happy Birthday, Grandma! We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by The Chancel Choir; Ryan Rowe, tenor; Mike Davis, piano; and Anne Huffman, conductor. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before the service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, Lauren Rossitch, and Tay Nay Sar. * The Congregation standing as each is able.

Emergency vehicles require a 20 foot minimum for access. The concrete area in front of the narthex is not for parking. It is for loading and unloading when people need assistance and to give access to emergency vehicles. LENTEN ART IN OUR SANCTUARY: Angels as Messengers: Sculptures: The angel sculptures displayed on the Communion table employ a variety of media and styles and will vary from week to week. They reflect the unique forms of these messengers envisioned by contemporary artists from throughout the world. The angels are on loan from the private collection of a member of our church. They remind us to open our hearts and minds to the Divine. Prints: The 22 images of angels displayed on the walls of the Sanctuary encompass styles ranging from folk art to Old Master. They are arranged as a timeline from Old to New Testament. The oldest image in the group is by an unknown artist of the 13 th century; the most recent by an outsider artist who designed album covers for R.E.M. and Talking Heads. The exhibit begins on the left wall as you enter the sanctuary with the Adoring Angel from the N.C. Museum of Art and continues clockwise, ending at the right side with Angel Holding a Sun, by English artist William Morris. The collection was assembled by members of Binkley s Fine Arts Committee with the permission of major art museums and private collectors. Exhibit notes are provided to help with your interpretation. 9 THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks.
