We are fortunate at Binkley to have intentionally chosen from our founding to follow the Liturgical Year. Each liturgical season brings with it specific patterns and practices; rhythms, if you will, that allow us to follow more fully in the way of Jesus with head and heart and body. During the season of Lent things change drastically. The singing or saying of "alleluia" is silenced, the paraments (the hangings on the pulpit, lectern, and communion table) change to purple or to unbleached linen, and music takes on a more somber and penitential nature. In some Christian traditions instrumental music, especially organ music, is completely "given up" for Lent. This year at Binkley we will "give up" a portion of the organ music that we normally hear each Sunday by omitting the voluntary. The closing voluntary will return on Easter Day.

The flowers on the communion table are given by Bill and Abbie Dickinson in gratitude for the ministries of Binkley and Barbee s Chapel, and their family. Included in the arrangement is a woodcarved angel from the Czech Republic, and another wood carved angel is displayed at the back of the Sanctuary. These angels are a complement to the Lenten Art Exhibit curated by the Fine Arts Committee, Angels as Messengers. You are encouraged to take in the exhibit which is displayed on the back walls of the Sanctuary. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by the Barbee s Chapel Choir; The Rev d. Chip Howell; Nay Howell; The Binkley Chancel Choir; Mike Davis, piano; and Ryan Rowe, tenor. WOMEN'S RETREAT: Mar. 9-11, Trinity Center, Salter Path, NC: Join us this year as we consider the theme, "Inhabiting a Woman's Soul," with help from two medieval women mystics, Mechthild and Teresa. Just a short walk from the ocean, you'll have time to meander, relax, listen, make art, pray, and worship -- and also play and laugh -- with friends new and old. Deadline: February 28. THE MUSIC MINISTRY WELCOMES LUKE BOEHM TO THE CHORAL SCHOLAR PROGRAM Luke Boehm is a Senior at UNC-Chapel Hill. He studies Vocal Performance and Economics with a minor in military science. Upon graduation, he will commission into the U.S. Army as a 2LT in the Infantry, and be stationed in Fort Benning, GA. He s been singing since middle school, and is honored to a part of the choir at Binkley.
