1 THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH JANUARY 14, 2018 THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY BECOMING AWARE OF GOD But the end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the beloved community. It is this type of spirit and this type of love that can transform opposers into friends. It is this type of understanding and goodwill that will transform the deep gloom of the old age into the exuberant gladness of the new age. It is an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return This is the love that may well be the salvation of our civilization. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
2 GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. (Sanctus means holy or sacred. ) Today, the Sanctus Bell rings to signify the holy around, among, and within us. VOLUNTARY Prelude on What a Friend We Have In Jesus Darwin Wolford INTROIT Christmas Joy Mark Schweizer When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky has withdrawn, when the kings see their prophecy rightly fulfilled, when the princes and shepherds have gone; then the true work of Christmas begins. To find the lost, to heal the broken hearts, to feed the hungry, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among all people, to make music in the heart. Text: Now the Work of Christmas Begins composed by Howard Thurman, an African-American theologian, educator, and civil rights leader. * CALL TO WORSHIP Stephanie Ford One: O God, all people are beloved by You and carry the spark of your presence. Many: Help us, this day, to see everyone we meet as an expression of Your image. One: O Creator, You have instilled all of life with an inescapable kinship of mutuality. Many: Open our hearts to the thread of Your Love uniting us all in a single garment of destiny. One: O Jesus, our Friend and Redeemer, You showed love, reconciliation, and steadfast presence to all those in need. Many: Inspire in us the same passion for hope-filled action on behalf of unheard voices. One: O Holy Spirit, You continue to blow through us, sounding through fresh voices, the possibilities of a just and peaceful community. ALL: So enliven us through word and song, beauty and inspiration, to be Your beloved community in this world. * PROCESSIONAL HYMN All Hail the Power of Jesus Name 91 CORONATION * INVOCATION * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST One: The peace of Christ be with you! MUSIC NOTES This morning s music is offered to the glory of God and in tribute to the life and legacy of The Rev d Dr Martin Luther King Jr., especially focusing on Dr. King s vision of Beloved Community. Our service is bookended by a contemporary musical setting of the poetry of African American Theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman, and a response to that poetry by composer Jim Strathdee. Today we will sing and hear music that was, according to journalist Adelle Banks, dear to King ( There is a Balm in Gilead, All Hail the Power of Jesus Name, If I Can Help Somebody ). Lewis Baldwin, a religious studies professor at Vanderbilt University who has written on King s cultural roots and prayer life, said songs like There is a Balm addressed some of the helplessness the Baptist minister must have felt as he constantly faced threats and attacks. Beyond music that encouraged him, Baldwin said King particularly appreciated songs such as If I Can Help Somebody that moved people toward the goal of creating King s Beloved Community.
5 WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table are given by Ed & Sherri Davis in memory of their parents. 7 ACOLTYE MINISTRY: The church is renewing its acolyte ministry this year, with a focus on training 3rd through 6th graders. Acolyting involves lighting candles, carrying banners, helping with Sanctuary setup, and more. Josh McIntyre, the instructor, grew up as an acolyte in his home church, and Josh brings enthusiasm and know-how to guiding others. Participants would learn more about traditions of the church and have the opportunity to play an active role in 11:00 am Worship. When the training concludes on March 18, participants would then sign up to lead as an acolyte in Worship beginning Palm Sunday, March 25, with alternating schedules through May 20. If your 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th grader is interested, please contact Stephanie Ford or Dale Osborne, or office@binkleychurch.org by Fri., Feb. 2. GIVING THANKS: Sharing with Syrian Refugees Last Sunday, nearly sixty folks gathered in the Fellowship Hall to fill baskets of supplies for the Syrian Refugee community in Durham. We also met a number of Syrian families. One young Syrian woman told the story of the long trek she made to the U.S. because of her daughter s medical condition. Heartbreaking, but full of courage and love. Fairouz, a Syrian American who regularly helps these families, shared about the ongoing needs in the refugee community. Youth and children made cards of welcome (in Arabic!) for the baskets. And the baskets were filled to overflowing so that we had to start filling bags and boxes! Thanks to all who contributed these necessities, and to all of the children who filled the baskets, and to Christine Jernigan, Nancy Cheek, Linda Hill-Wise, and the Bradshaw family for making it happen! --Stephanie Ford Dear Binkley Congregation, FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM We join with you in warmly welcoming Marcus McFaul as our new senior pastor. This is a time of new beginnings for all of us as we enter the new year with hope and high expectations for grace, peace, joy, and kindness within our congregation and without, as we minister to each other and God s world around us. We find it rather fun to imagine where we will be as a church in January 2019 and realize how many opportunities lie before us and some of the choices we will be given. And wonder how we will humbly accept and live up to our mission. We owe enormous gratitude to our staff who have taken on additional responsibilities as needed since last August and kept our pastoral and programmatic ministries on track in the midst of change and uncertainty. We are also enormously grateful to the many volunteers who have led us through a long transition time of searching, discerning, and putting in place leadership for Binkley s future and to a congregation who stayed the course, providing energy, expertise, and information needed for the challenges of this three year plus period. So on to our future. Marcus arrived in Chapel Hill earlier this week. He will attend the MLK Banquet Sunday evening, be present at the Church Council meeting on Monday evening, and begin his first day of employment on Tuesday, January 16. His first day in the pulpit will be Sunday, January 21. For those of you who would like to contact him, Marcus can be reached at hookem1962@gmail.com. We begin anew and together building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. Blessings and peace, Sonnie, Melinda, and Terry
