1 THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH NOVEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA We Are God s Hands on Earth Linda Vaughn On October 22 nd Binkley kicked off its annual Stewardship and Pledge Campaign. The theme last year was Stepping Out in Faith, and this year that theme moves forward with a call to action We are the Hands of God on Earth. When you hear that phrase, what does it mean to you? What does being the hands of God require of us? Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world These are the words of the 16th Century Roman Catholic Saint and Carmelite nun, Teresa of Avila ( ). Her words are direct and unmistakable they describe the Christian life as dynamic and active. I hope that is how you will think about the Stewardship and Pledge Campaign. I hope that you will give some thought to the many ways that Binkley Church has nurtured you, supported you, helped you grow in your faith, and given you opportunities to help others. Our Time and Talent pledge asks that you give Binkley some of your time, doing whatever you feel comfortable doing. We need you, Binkley needs you, so don t underestimate the value of your gift of time. By the same token, Binkley needs your financial support. We have an exciting program of ministry planned for That will take a lot of work, but it also takes money. The proposed budget for 2018 is approximately 20% greater than this year s budget. To be successful in supporting existing programs and taking on new initiatives, I hope you will thoughtfully and prayerfully consider increasing your pledge for Your moderator, Linda Vaughn Stewardship 2018 NOVEMBER 2017 PAGE 1

2 Moment for We were a roomful in the Timberlyne movie theater no. 6 a few weeks ago, all seats filled from back row to front. We d bought tickets in advance for a special showing of Come Walk With Me, and I was excited. Janet O Neal had ed me and Tim a few weeks earlier, to invite us to the showing of this documentary about the Meredith Bratcher life of Thich Nhat Hahn s community, Plum Village, in France. I knew of this Vietnamese Buddhist monk s teachings and insights on mindfulness, and on peace-making, from books but the movie took me to a much deeper layer of appreciation. And not me alone the whole room was silent, and attentive throughout the showing, and afterwards, when I spotted friends from Binkley in the parking lot, we hugged and laughed. Tim said, It was as if we d had the experience of being mindful, all together. Yes. I d like to share a little of the insights of Thich Nhat Hahn with you perhaps you will find food for thought, even food for living, in these words. This selection comes from a chapter in his book Living Buddha, Living Christ (publ. 1995) entitled Mindfulness and the Holy Spirit. In Buddhism, our effort is to practice mindfulness in each moment to know what is going on within and all around us.... When we are mindful, touching deeply the present moment, we can see and listen deeply, and the fruits are always understanding, acceptance, love, and the desire to relieve suffering and bring joy. When our beautiful child comes up to us and smiles, we are completely there for her. To me, mindfulness is very much like the Holy Spirit. Both are agents of healing. When you have mindfulness, you have love and understanding, you see more deeply, and you can heal the wounds in your own mind. The Buddha was called the King of Healers. In the Bible, when someone touches Christ, he or she is healed. It is not just touching a cloth that brings about a miracle. When you touch deep understanding and love, you are healed. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove, penetrated Him deeply, and he revealed the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Jesus healed whatever He touched. With the Holy Spirit in Him, His power as a healer transformed many people. All schools of Christianity agree on this.... Touching deeply is an important practice. We touch with our hands, our eyes, our ears, and also with our mindfulness. The first practice I learned as a novice monk was to breathe in and out consciously, to touch each breath with my mindfulness, identifying the in-breath as in-breath and the out-breath as out-breath. When you practice this way, your mind and body come into alignment, your wandering thoughts come to a stop, and you are at your best. Mindfulness is the substance of a Buddha. When you enter deeply into this moment, you see the nature of reality, and this insight liberates you from suffering and confusion. Peace is already there to some extent: the problem is whether we know how to touch it. Conscious breathing is the most basic Buddhist practice for touching peace. I would like to offer you this short exercise: Breathing in, I calm my body. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment. 3 THE STORY BEHIND BOB BRATCHER S GOOD NEWS BIBLE Editor s Note: As you probably know, the Good News Bible holds a special place in the heart of many at Binkley. Many members remember Binkley member the late Robert Bratcher, the principal translator of the New Testament, first published in 1966, and Chair of the committee that translated the Old Testament, issued in One of Dad s colleagues and friends was Phil Stine who now resides in Wilmington, NC after having lived all over the world. This summer, my sister Meredith and I had the privilege of meeting Phil and another of Dad s colleagues Roger Bullard in Roger s now hometown of Rocky Mount for a sort of reunion. Phil wanted to meet with us as he was writing a paper to be presented on November 20 at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature ( in Boston. After our reunion lunch, Phil sent us a copy of the paper and kindly agreed that it could be included in the Beacon with the hope that you will be interested in the origins of Binkley s favorite Bible. * Editor From Good News for Modern Man to Good News Bible: Origins and Early Issues Philip C. Stine, United Bible Societies It began with the Southern Baptists. Sometime in 1961, The Reverend M. Wendell Belew, the Secretary of Special Ministries of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, wrote the American Bible Society (ABS) to ask what the best translation would be for someone who read English as a second language. The Translation Secretary for the ABS, Eugene A. Nida, gathered several of the translation staff together to examine the various translations then available: Goodspeed, Phillips, the Revised Standard Version, and others. They paid special attention to a translation of some of the Gospels that had been prepared in Liberia by Annie Cressman, a missionary with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. This translation, whose version of the Gospel of John the ABS had published that year, used an extremely limited English vocabulary. Nida pointed out places in the texts of each of the translations that simply would not make sense to people who spoke English as a second language. The other staff contributed examples as well. Consequently, in December of 1961 Nida wrote to Robert Bratcher, a member of the translation department of ABS, asking him if he would consider doing a translation of the New Testament for Southern Baptists. Bratcher responded that it would be a good thing for Southern Baptists to know their Bible, so he would try it. Bratcher had grown up in Brazil where his parents were Southern Baptist missionaries. He spoke excellent Brazilian Portuguese, and after finishing his doctorate at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he and his wife June had gone to Brazil as Southern Baptist missionaries, where Bratcher began teaching in the Baptist seminary. Because of his biblical training and fluency in Portuguese, in addition to teaching, he was a member of a committee to prepare a revision of the Almeida translation. In 1950, Nida of the ABS and Wilfred Bradnock, Translation Secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS), had worked with this committee. Bratcher ran afoul of the Baptists in Brazil when he wrote that the Bible seemed to allow for apostasy. The possibility of falling away into sin was contradictory to the very strongly held belief of the Baptists in Brazil of once saved always saved. The controversy was such that by late 1956 Bratcher realized he would not be able to return to Brazil from furlough in the US. He wrote to Nida to say, I know that you do a lot of traveling and you know Baptist seminaries and colleges. If you find a place you think you could recommend me to, where I would fit in, would you please remember me? Nida made a special trip to Louisville, Kentucky, to meet with the Bratchers. Bob, he said, we ll keep on looking for a place for you to teach, but in the meanwhile, why don t you join the Translations Department of the American Bible Society as the New Testament consultant? As Bratcher remarked, So that was 1957, and the meanwhile lasted until It was, in Bratcher s words, a very happy meanwhile and a very happy meanwhile for the Bible Societies too as ABS turned to him with the request from Rev. Belew. As a matter of coincidence, Belew and Bratcher had been classmates both at Georgetown College in Kentucky and at Southern Seminary. READ THE ENTIRE PAPER HERE NOVEMBER 2017 PAGE 3

BOOK DISCUSSION: Falling Upward: Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Franciscan Fr. Richard Rohr Nov. 7 - Dec. 12, Tuesdays, 7-8:30 pm, Library The spiritual lessons of the two halves of life, Rohr writes, involve building our container and finding its contents. The spiritual transition from one half to the next may take years or happen quickly, when some unbidden event occurs that shakes our very foundation. When this happens, the religion of our early years appears inadequate for the challenges of the adult life because it usually is. Falling Upward introduces readers to concepts that appear throughout his writing, including the two halves of spiritual life, the True and False Self, the Shadow Self and more. At the first session, we ll discuss the introduction and Chapter 1. If you are interested in a deeper study, A Companion Journal to Falling Upward is also available. The discussion will be facilitated by Cate Alexander. Contact Stephanie to sign up. 7 MEET THE HIGHSMITHS Have you had a chance to meet this delightful family? Miles and Megan, and their children, Turner and Mercer. Megan and Miles are both natives of the Myers Park area of Charlotte. They married in 2004, and shortly after their son Turner was born in 2006, they moved to New York City, where Mercer was born in In 2012, they decided to return to the warmer climes of North Carolina, and settled in Chapel Hill. Later that year, they found Binkley. Turner (10) is an energetic, passionate, athletic, deeply feeling and sensing, loving and a thoughtful fellow. Younger sister, Mercer, at 7, is warm and understanding, artistic, creative, thoughtful, kind, and tender. Both attend the Carolina Friends School, and have in their five years at Binkley, enjoyed many activities, including our annual church-wide retreat, Sunday School, Hanging of the Greens, All Hallow s Eve, and more. Megan and Miles appreciate Binkley. Megan will never forget her experience of the class, It s Not Just One Way, when she learned that others also had doubts and questions, yet had found faith carrying them through adversity. Megan also appreciates last fall, when 4 th grader Turner was ready for a change in Sunday School, and Angela Snider created an innovative, service-learning class for him and for her son, Sam (a model that s continued this year). And Miles deeply values Binkley s openness to different understandings of faith and its efforts to be non-judgmental. He is proud to be part of a church with a rich history of advocacy for equality and social justice. Both Megan and Miles have made rich connections through Mindful Parenting, the class they cofacilitate. The class has become a community as parents reach out to each other for prayer and support regularly. Each week, class members share the ups and downs of a spiritually challenging job called parenting. The Highsmiths have also enjoyed Early Worship and hope for other inventive ways to build young families within the church. Thinking about the future, Miles notes, I believe Binkley is a truly special place with a wonderful foundation. I hope we can preserve this into the generations to come. A VISIT TO ANATHOTH COMMUNITY GARDEN AND FARM Saturday, Nov. 4, 10:30 am-2:30 pm Children and their families are invited to join the youth on an outing to learn and work at Anathoth, a partner of Binkley, whose mission of sustainable agriculture that connects neighbor to neighbor, the land, and God. CHANCEL CHOIR RETREAT October 6-8, 2017 at Trinity Center in Salter Path, NC The Chancel Choir, Choral Scholars, and Daniel wish to thank everyone, who through their generosity and support of the annual Music Ministry Cabaret, helped make this time of learning, fellowship, and retreat possible. We are grateful. What our singers are saying about the retreat: What a wonderful choir retreat! Our guest clinician, Dr. Hugh Floyd from Furman University, was simply astounding in his breadth of knowledge about the music we were learning. His historical perspectives on many of the lyrics we were singing were fascinating. His enthusiasm for teaching was contagious and it made us work just that much harder. We still had some beach time and enjoyed the social aspects of the retreat as well. Best choir retreat yet! Learned a lot about the genius of composer-hymn writers I'd never learned in 60 years of serious choir singing. Learned some catchy and memorable ways to remember intonation tips Daniel's been pushing all along. Amazing time away with music, with friends, and with the Eternal. NOVEMBER 2017 PAGE 9

10 Pursuing Justice and Peace in the Way of Jesus BINKLEY TO HOST RACIAL EQUITY INSTITUTE TRAINING January Phase I: "Foundational Training in Historical and Institutional Racism" In our contemporary society, racism shapes the outcomes of all institutions. It pits entrenched patterns of power against what are often faint images of equity. Yet despite our concerns and hard work many of us are challenged to understand how racism remains alive and well in all our institutions, which continues to advantage some while harming others. This workshop helps participants become clear on how race and racism have been constructed in the US and how racism lives in our unconscious minds and social structures even 50 years after the successes of the Civil Rights movement. This workshop is important for people of color and white people who are committed to eliminating racism. It provides an analysis that helps participants gain clarity about how racism is organized and how to work to disrupt its powerful influence. The Racial Equity Institute (REI) is an alliance of trainers, organizers, and institutional leaders who devote themselves to the work of creating racially equitable organizations and systems. Through training and consultation, they help organizations develop tools to challenge patterns of power and grow equity. REI workshops in Orange County have been organized and hosted by Orange Organizing Against Racism (OAR) since Binkley Baptist Church is pleased to work with Orange OAR to co-host this workshop by providing space and volunteers. We hope a large number from our community will choose to participate so that we might learn together. To register, click here. The Friday and Saturday sessions will take place in the Fellowship Hall from 9 am 5 pm. Scholarships can be made available to Binkley members. Please contact Dale for scholarship questions. COALITION FOR PEACE WITH JUSTICE Examining the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict Nov. 4, 10 am-1pm, Fellowship Hall. Binkley will host a Community Forum to commemorate 100 years since the Balfour Declaration of 1917 on Join the Coalition for Peace with Justice for this interfaith program which will explore the historical document and its implications. How does the Balfour Declaration and its consequences influence US foreign policy? What role can each of us play to bring about a more just resolution for a sustainable peace for both Palestinians and Israelis? For more information, or contact Mary Lou Smith. WHAT IS SANCTUARY? Sanctuary offers safe harbor for undocumented immigrants who might otherwise be deported by federal immigration law enforcement officials. Four churches in NC have recently become public Sanctuary spaces, with the possibility of three more following suit in the Orange County area in the coming months. A group of area churches will meet at Binkley on the third Sunday of each month at 7 pm in the library to discuss Sanctuary and how local churches can be involved. All are welcome to join the discussion. The next meeting is November 19 at 7 pm in the Library. Click here to read Ashley Nissler s words on Sanctuary, shared in worship on October 22. 11 THE YOUTH ARE ALIVE AND ACTIVE On Sunday, October 8 the youth of Binkley put on their grungy clothes and headed to the banks of Booker Creek off of Willow Dr. They spent about 75 minutes cleaning up all sorts of odd trash near the water. The boys found a 1996 Doritos chip bag and the girls found a good sized water moccasin. Everyone survived and our waterways got a little cleaner. Many thanks to Mary Ann Bradshaw who served as our female chaperone on this service project. On the weekend of October the youth made their annual trek to the white waters of the Nantahala River. Steve Jernigan, Heather Rabalais and Stacy Shelp were excellent adult chaperones. They experienced God's beautiful scenery along the river as they paddled their way through the 48 degree waters. The experience gave everyone further self-confidence and a thorough grasp of the importance of teamwork. Tim Walker and Ell Shelp-Peck were on senior leaders on the journey. They trained the group in the fine art of campfire hospitality. The participants wish to thank the church for praying for a safe journey. They also also need to thank Krispy Kreme for hot doughnuts. On October 22 the youth got their hands all slimy and gooey. They also exercised their artistic carving skills while trying to avoid small flames. The night was filled with laughter, great food and many finely carved pumpkins. James Jernigan and Matteus Butler created a pumpkin that payed homage to their nemesis, a boy named Tony D. You will have to ask them for the details of this neighborhood mystery teen. 25 YEARS OF JOY AND THANKFULNESS I was surprised. My heart was lifted and my eyes were watery as I came into the full experience of joy and love at the end of worship on October 8. Linda Vaughn and Melinda Wilde organized a tremendous celebration of our 25 years in ministry together at Binkley. The balloons of remembrance, the hugs of gratitude and the song from Baptist Youth Camp enabled me to remember once again why I love serving God at Binkley. With Suzy standing by my side for all 25 years, the journey has been extraordinarily holy. Thank you for sharing your love with me. Peace, Dale N OVEMBER 2017 P AGE 11

12 Moment for Meditation continued from p. 2 Breathing in, I calm my body. This is like drinking a glass of cool water. You feel the freshness permeate your body. When I breathe in and recite this line, I actually experience my breathing calming my body and my mind. In Buddhist meditation, body and mind become one. Breathing out, I smile. One smile can relax hundreds of muscles in your face and make you master of yourself. Whenever you see an image of the Buddha, he is always smiling. When you smile with mindfulness, you realize the wonder of a smile. Dwelling in the present moment. We recite this line as we breathe in again, and we don t think of anything else. We know exactly where we are. Usually we say, Wait until I finish school THE 24TH BINKLEY GOLF OPEN REPORT The 2017 Fall Binkley Open Golf Tournament concluded on an a hot, humid day without any rain as 11 members and friends of Binkley competed in a friendly round at the Southwick Golf Course located on the outskirts of Swepsonville west of Chapel Hill. Dale Osborne brought along his personal Golf Coach, Carl Henley, who offered support and suggestions to Dale s team. However it was not enough to enable them to win. The Fall Tournament was hosted by Nape Baker and Joe Clontz. Using the Captain s Choice format with unique rules, they played in two foursomes and one threesome. Nape Baker, David Warren, Dick Overly and Mark Walters won with a score of 48 which is 23 under par. They took home specially crafted trophies from the creative workshop of Fred Schroeder. Larry McManus had the longest drive for men under 55, Mark Walters had the Longest Drive for men and Charles Coble had the longest drive for men 75 and older. The five par threes were no problem for David Warren, Nape Baker and Larry McManus who were closest to the flag on their drive. A Spring 2018 outing is already in the works with details coming in the next few months. and get my Ph.D degree, and then I will be really alive. But when we obtain it, we say, I have to wait until I have a job in order to be really alive. After the job, we need a car, and after the car, a house. We are not capable of being alive in the present moment. We always postpone being alive to the future, we don t know exactly when. It is possible we will never be truly alive in our entire life. The technique, if we must speak of a technique, is to be in the present moment. To be aware that we are here and now, that the only moment to be alive is the present moment. When we breath out, we say, I know this is a wonderful moment. To be truly here, now, and to enjoy the present moment is our most important task. We can even shorten the verse to six words. As we breathe in, we say to ourselves, Calming, and as we breather out, we say, Smiling. As we breathe in again, we say Present moment, and as we breathe out, Wonderful moment. Practicing this way can help us touch peace right away. We don t have to wait for any other conditions to be present. Not an artist? Never fear--the Art Show isn t just for master painters and sculptors. All are welcome to peruse the show in the Fellowship Hall through November 17.
