We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. The flowers on the communion table are given by Howard and Lillian Lee in memory of our parents and in celebration of our Binkley Family. About today s Guest Preacher: Bob Ballance, a former editor of Baptists Today, has been a pastor for three decades. A hands-on parson, he celebrates the work of the local church in spite of its many faults, especially when it embraces the rejected, serves the least of these, and worships in a way that uplifts and comforts, confronts and exhorts the gathered body. While Southern Baptist during his younger years and first ordained in that tradition, his ordination credentials now are from the American Baptist tradition. Married to Catherine Kent Ballance, also a Baptist clergy person, they have been in ministry together all over North Carolina, but also in Austin, Atlanta and Boulder, Colorado. They currently live in South Boston, Virginia, where he serves as pastor. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by The Chancel Choir; The Youth Choir; and Nan Pardington, piano. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before the service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, and Hannah Wall. * The Congregation standing as each is able.
5 WELCOME TO BINKLEY! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. 6 WEDNESDAY NIGHT SERIES Oct. 4, 5:30 pm, Lounge: Loving Our Neighbor Who Lives with Dementia, Part 2: Jesus told us to love our neighbor, but what happens when our neighbor is now living with dementia? The ways our neighbor used to communicate, worship, and show love are changing. In this session, Loy will explore the specific characteristics and attending needs that a person experiences going through each stage of dementia. Loy will help us apply that knowledge in our spiritual presence and care of our family member or friend. Loy Campbell, Occupational Therapist at LifePath Home Health (Hospice of Alamance-Caswell) and former supervisor for Jenni Reiff, brings years of experience and compassion in leading us. Dinner is $6 for adults, $3 for children. Check Event in the Friendship Register or contact the office but Tuesday at noon to make a reservation. BINKLEY AT BARBEE S Oct. 15, 10 am, Barbee s Chapel: On Sunday, October 15, we are cordially invited to worship and break bread with our friends at Barbee s Chapel. Bishop Gene Hatley and our many brothers and sisters at his church look forward to praising God and learning from scripture together. Our own Stephanie Ford will be bringing the sermon from Barbee s pulpit. Daniel Cherrix will lead our Chancel Choir in spirited song. The Choir from Barbee s will delight our ears and we will all be enriched by sharing a meal together after the service. Please mark your calendars and set your clocks for worship at 10 am, when Barbee s begins its service. THE BINKLEY ART SHOW: OCTOBER 15-NOVEMBER 17: Not an artist? HURRICANE RELIEF: The devastation and destruction caused by several recent hurricanes and earthquakes causes us to pray, to grieve and to wonder. The power of God's creation is both beautiful and overwhelming. Many have offered prayerful and financial support in the wake of the hurricanes. The Church Council recently approved another focused way we can help. Church member Julie Lentz, who lived on St. Thomas for 26 years, is offering matching funds of up to $25,000 for gifts written to Binkley Baptist with "Virgin Island Relief" on the check. The funds we raise will be directed to an on the ground Relief agency that is helping homeowners rebuild their homes. We also encourage prayer for everyone suffering in Puerto Rico, home to Maribel Bruno s mother. ART IN THE FAMILY: Beautiful oil paintings by Zoe and Alan Reddick are on display at the Seymour Senior Center through October 26, You will be inspired and amazed by this Father/Daughter art display. 7 THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks.
