3 CALL TO PRAYER Tis Midnight arr. Daniel Cherrix Tis midnight, and on Olive s brow the star is dimmed that lately shone; tis midnight, in the garden now the suffering Savior prays alone. Tis midnight, and, from all removed, the Savior wrestles lone with fears; e en that disciple whom he loved heeds not the Savior s grief and tears. Tis midnight, and from heavenly plains is borne the song that angels know; unheard by mortals are the strains that gently soothe the Savior s woe. Go to dark Gethsemane, all who feel the tempter s pow r; your Redeemer s conflict see, watch with him one bitter hour: turn not from his griefs away; learn of Jesus Christ to pray. THE MORNING PRAYER HELD IN SILENCE O God, you have endowed faith with power to overcome the world, increase our faith. Help us at the beginning of his holiest of weeks to examine again our commitments, assumptions, and loyalties. Let the figure of Jesus Christ stand over us in mercy and in judgment, measuring our sin and pointing us to grace. Illuminate the way for all who are confused. Quiet the troubled heart. Deliver those who are captive to mean and unworthy purposes. Companion the bereaved, and comfort the dying. We pray today for all who find themselves at work at the pressure points of history, amid the swirl of controversy. Expand our horizons, O God, lest the trials of the moment close us in to despair, and shut us out from the certainties that belong to all who love you and look for your appearing. And as these mercies come, we will turn with thanks to you the giver. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. From Ernest Campbell s Where Cross the Crowded Ways: Prayers of a City Pastor HEARING & RESPONDING HYMN If We Just Talk of Thoughts and Prayers O WALY WALY If we just talk of thoughts and prayers And don t live out a faith that dares, And don t take away the ways of death, Our thoughts and prayers are fleeting breath. If we just dream of what can be And do not build community, And do not seek to change our ways, Our dreams of change are false displays.

4 SERMON Thoughts and Prayers, Jesus Marcus McFaul HYMN If We Just Talk of Thoughts and Prayers If we just sing of doing good And don t walk through our neighborhood To learn its hope, to ease its pain, Our talk of God is simply vain. God, may our prayers and dreams and songs Lead to a faith that takes on wrongs That works for peace and justice, too. Then will our prayers bring joy to you. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name. Philippians 2: 8 9 * DOXOLOGY Please sign with the leader or simply sing. OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * AN INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP O Sacred Head, Now Wounded 202 If you wish to become a member of Binkley Baptist Church, you are invited to come forward during the hymn to be welcomed and received. PASSION CHORALE * RECEPTION & INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS 341 * BLESSING & BENEDICTION * VOLUNTARY Prelude on Passion Chorale Johann Gottfried Walther

The final session on May 20 falls on Pentecost Sunday and will include breakfast. Marcus McFaul will facilitate the class. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to office@binkleychurch.org by April 24. LENTEN ART IN OUR SANCTUARY: Angels as Messengers: Sculptures: The angel sculptures displayed on the Communion table employ a variety of media and styles and will vary from week to week. They reflect the unique forms of these messengers envisioned by contemporary artists from throughout the world. The angels are on loan from the private collection of a member of our church. They remind us to open our hearts and minds to the Divine. Prints: The 22 images of angels displayed on the walls of the Sanctuary encompass styles ranging from folk art to Old Master. They are arranged as a timeline from Old to New Testament. The oldest image in the group is by an unknown artist of the 13 th century; the most recent by an outsider artist who designed album covers for R.E.M. and Talking Heads. The exhibit begins on the left wall as you enter the sanctuary with the Adoring Angel from the N.C. Museum of Art and continues clockwise, ending at the right side with Angel Holding a Sun, by English artist William Morris. The collection was assembled by members of Binkley s Fine Arts Committee with the permission of major art museums and private collectors. Exhibit notes are provided to help with your interpretation. Myra Knight, Chair, Fine Arts Committee

10 HOLY WEEK OFFERINGS WALK THE LABYRINTH: The labyrinth is an ancient spiritual tool. Its winding walk symbolizes a pilgrim s walk with God. First recorded as used by Christians in the 4 th century, the labyrinth is an archetype found in all religious traditions. In walking the labyrinth, you may pray, let go of burdens, meditate, rededicate mind and heart, or simply be. After worship on Palm Sunday, Binkley members, along with 7 other area congregations, will transform the Sanctuary by laying a labyrinth in the middle. The labyrinth is available throughout Holy Week.Come as you are; children are also welcome! LABYRINTH AVAILABLE FOR WALKING Sunday, March 25 Monday, March 26 Tuesday, March 27 Wednesday, March 28 Thursday, March 29 Friday, March 30 4 pm-8:30 pm 6:30 am-8:30 pm 6:30 am-8:30 pm 6:30 am-6 pm The labyrinth will be offered in silence with no music on Wednesday. 6:30 am-6 pm 6:30 am-1:30 pm Music Meditation: Good Friday Service: 12-1 Special Opportunities: Children s Walk, Sunday, March 25, 4-4:45 pm. This is a group walk, so please plan on arriving in time for the 4 pm start time. Meet in the Narthex. Friends of Christ School Labyrinth Walk, open to all, Wednesday, March 28, at 10 am, beginning in the Chapel. DEEPENING INTO THE LABYRINTH EXPERIENCE An Opportunity for Walkers: The meditative experience of walking the labyrinth is beautiful, and unique to each time of walking, and complete in itself. And yet, when you ve finished, you may feel the wish to spend some time absorbing it further. You are welcomed to the Chapel, where you ll find a table in the corner, with paper and pens for your journaling, and colored pencils for your drawing. May your meditations sink deep within, and nurture you in growth and healing. THE WELCOME LIGHT IS LIT: A Special Invitation during Holy Week: During Lent, we are encouraged to take a fresh look at how we pray, how we meditate, how we might offer our presence and companionship to one another. This year the Deacons want to offer a personal welcome for any who come to the Chapel during Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday on March 25, and going through Holy Saturday on March 31. We are scheduling times when a candle will be lit, and a person will be present in silent welcome for any who come. Anyone who d like to volunteer as a Chapel companion is invited to sign up check your Friday Update or March Newsletter for instructions on signing up.this invitation comes from a collaboration between Melinda Wilde, Diaconate chair, and Meredith Bratcher. Best wishes for your practices during this Lent; may they work and turn the soil of the inner life, and help to enliven the seeds of kindness, peace, and love already planted there. STATIONS OF THE CROSS: During Holy Week, March in Binkley s Fellowship Hall, you will find an opportunity to pray for health and support for people living with a mental illness: the Stations of the Cross, created to also further understanding of mental illness and local resources for mental health. This compelling artistic rendering by Mary Button was first offered at University UMC during Lent As you walk the stations, you are invited to meditate on Christ s suffering, even as you pray for persons with specific mental illnesses and consider local efforts to bring healing and hope. Binkley members are invited to enjoy some light refreshments in the Fellowship Hall following worship on March 25 when the stations will begin their display.

12 DEACON ELECTIONS On April 15, we will elect new deacons to take office in May. These new deacons will replace those completing their three-year terms: Roal Carlson, Lillian Lee, Tim Ross, Brennetta Simpson, Karen Van Manen and Melinda Wilde. The new deacons will join Chair-elect Terry Huneycutt-Horn and Gretchen Aylsworth, Margie Billinger, Marcella Burk-Groon, Stuart Cantrell, Barbara Davis, Tom Fewel, Lyn Lamont, Allan Maltbie, and Anne Winfield. Our congregation speaks of the mission of Binkley Baptist Church as building compassion and joyful community. Deacons personify this by assisting our ministers in pastoral care for the congregation. This may differ from deacon to deacon as each decides how best to reach out to those members assigned to him/her in order to deepen our congregational connections. A list of Binkley members eligible to serve as new deacons will be posted in the narthex in the coming weeks. I hope that you will prayerfully consider leaving your name on the list of possible nominees this year. If you feel you are not able to serve as a deacon at this time, please mark your name off this list or notify Stephenie Sanders in the church office by April 9. The names remaining will become the nominees on the ballot on April 15. It has been my great joy to serve as your Diaconate Chair this past year. ~Melinda Wilde General Contact New Members Serious Illness/Crisis/Problem Death in family Monthly meetings and informal updates Communion Worship Greeters Nomination of officers Birth of Baby Maundy Thursday New Member Orientation What it means to be a Deacon Pastoral Care Reach out via phone, , card, or visit following initial assignment of member/family.
