IS IT FOR ME DEAR SAVIOR? Introduction: A. Last Week I Took Us To The Foot Of The Cross. 1. We reminded ourselves of the events that occurred the night before and the day of the Crucifixion. 2. Then we considered what WE see when we Stand At The Foot Of The Cross: a. The SUFFERING of Jesus! b. The DETERMINATION of Jesus! c. The COMPASSION of Jesus! d. The LOVE of Jesus! 3. Many of you have commented upon the impact of that sermon upon your hearts -- that was the intended result. 4. Hymn: Have You Seen Jesus My Lord? Verse 3: Have you ever looked at the cross, with a man hanging in pain And the look of love in his eyes? Then I say You ve seen Jesus my Lord. (refrain) Chorus: Have you seen Jesus my Lord? He s here in plainview. Take a look, open your eyes, He ll show it to you. -- Words and Music by John Fischer, We ended that study by asking, What Did Jesus See When He LOOKED DOWN From The Cross 2,000 Years Ago? And What Does Jesus See In Our Lives Today? 1

B. Today, I Want Us To Return To The Cross And Ask Another Question, In The Words Of The Hymn: Is It For Me Dear Savior? C. (Slide #3) The Lyrics Of Is It For Me Dear Savior? Verse 1: Is it for me, dear Savior, Thy glory and Thy rest, For me, so weak and sinful? O shall I be so blessed? Refrain O Savior, my Redeemer, What can I but adore, And magnify and praise Thee, And love Thee evermore? Verse 2: Is it for me, Thy welcome, Thy gracious Enter in, For me Thy Come, ye blessed, For me so full of sin? Refrain O Savior, my Redeemer, What can I but adore, And magnify and praise Thee, And love Thee evermore? Verse 3: O Savior, precious Savior, My heart is at Thy feet; I bless Thee, and I love Thee, And Thee I long to meet. Refrain O Savior, my Redeemer, What can I but adore, 2

And magnify and praise Thee, And love Thee evermore? Verse 4: I ll be with Thee forever, And never grieve Thee more; Dear Savior, I must praise Thee, And love Thee evermore. Refrain O Savior, my Redeemer, What can I but adore, And magnify and praise Thee, And love Thee evermore? -- Words: Frances R. Favergal, Music: Tullius C. O Kane D. Our Understanding Of Self And Our Struggles: 1. Phrases in the song: a. Verse 1: For me, so weak and sinful? b. Verse 2: For me so full of sin? 2. You know yourself like NO ONE ELSE knows you! a. The journey that you have been on in your life -- from SIN to SALVATION! b. The commitment or lack of commitment that you have for Jesus in your heart. c. The struggles you have with temptation and sin. d. The attitudes of your heart. e. The thought that you give to what Jesus did for you! f. The appreciation or lack of it that you have for Jesu! I. (Slide #4) Is It For ME That You Would SUFFER And DIE On The Cross? A. His Suffering: 1. Emotionally: a. Mt. 26:38 Then He said to them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me. b. Mt. 26:39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. 3

c. Lk. 22:44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 2. Physically: a. The torture of scourging! b. The agony of crucifixion. B. And We Realize That He Did It For US! 1. Many quote Jn. 3:16 without making a personal application: For God so loved THE WORLD that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOEVER believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. a. Did He die for the world? Absolutely. b. But it is FAR MORE PERSONAL FOR US! 2. His Death was a vicarious Death [He died for US!]: a. (Slide #5) Is. 53:4-6 Surely He has borne OUR griefs And carried OUR sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. (Slide #6) 5 But He was wounded for OUR transgressions, He was bruised for OUR iniquities; The chastisement for OUR peace was upon Him, (Slide #7) And BY HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has LAID ON HIM THE INIQUITY OF US ALL. b. (Slide #8) Do we remind ourselves that His Death is OUR ONLY HOPE! 3. Think of the words of the Hymn: Christ Receiveth Sinful Men or Sinners Jesus Will Receive -- even me with all my sin! II. (Slide #9) Is It For ME That You Would Be PATIENT WITH ME? A. We Stand Amazed That God Would Be SO Willing To Extend Mercy And Grace To Us And That Christ Would Die For Us! B. Realizing Their Concern For Us Drives Us To Guilt And Penitence! 1. Mt. 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 4

2. I believe this passage is a picture of the journey TO salvation and how one lives when he finds salvation -- it STARTS by being poor in spirit -- knowing that we are totally helpless and have nothing to offer God to attain our salvation. That bring great pain or guilt in the heart -- we mourn for our sin! C. II Cor. 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, D. Phrases In The Song Express The Feelings Of Personal Struggle That Christians Feel In Our Lives Today: 1. Verse 1: For me, so weak and sinful? 2. Verse 2: For me so full of sin? E. Paul Always Remembered God s Mercy And Grace That He Needed! 1. I Cor. 15:8-10 Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 2. He never forgot his stubborn heart that resisted and rejected Jesus! a. Ac. 9:4,5 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? 5 And he said, Who are You, Lord? Then the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads. b. Paul told the Jewish multitude: Ac. 22:4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, c. He talked about this with Agrippa: Ac. 26:9-11 Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. 11 And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. 5

3. He NEVER forgot his past sins that were SO antagonistic to Christ, Christians, and the Church! Oh how he knew that he needed God s grace! a. I Tim. 1:15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. b. I Tim. 1:12,13 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, 13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 4. He was SO grateful for what he received in Christ! Ac. 26:22,23 Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come-- 2 that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles. F. Col. 1:12-14 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. III. (Slide #10) Is It For ME That You Would WELCOME ME TO AN ETERNAL HOME IN HEAVEN? A. Imagine Meeting And Being With The Godhead! 1. Verse 3: And Thee I long to meet. 2. Verse 4: I ll be with Thee forever, And never grieve Thee more; 3. Hymn: Face To Face B. When We Are Faithful To Him, He Will Surely Be Faithful To Us! 1. II Pet. 1:10,11 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2. I Pet. 1:3,4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 6

C. Tit. 3;7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. D. Imagine How Precious The Christian s Welcome Home! Will Be! IV. (Slide #11) The Impact Of What Christ Has Done For Me! A. (Slide #12) We Feel SO Blessed! 1. (Slide #13) WHY Should He Love Me So? 2. Rom. 5:6-11 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. 3. 4. (Slide #14) Jesus Paid It All! B. (Slide #15) Our Hearts Are Overflowing With Adoration, Magnifying And Praising Him, And Loving Him! 1. Phil. 2:9-11 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 2. Eph. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 3. I Pet. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 7

4. My Jesus I Love Thee! C. ( ) We Realize Our Constant Need For His Mercy! 1. Lk. 18:9-14 Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner! 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. 2. We realize today our need for His mercy, as much as when we committed ourselves to Him! D. ( ) It Keeps Us Humble: 1. Ps. 9:12 When He avenges blood, He remembers them; He does not forget the cry of the humble. 2. Ps. 138:6 Though the LORD is on high, Yet He regards the lowly; But the proud He knows from afar. 3. Jesus loves and praises the humble! Mt. 18:2-4 Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, 3 and said, Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. E. ( ) We NEVER Get Comfortable Or Arrogantly Affirm I Have It Made! 1. I Cor. 10:12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 2. We NEVER decide that we can let down our guard and be complacent! F. ( ) We Glory ONLY in the Cross! 1. Gal. 6:14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 2. We rejoice in Christ and in His Blood -- Without Him I Would Be Nothing! 8

Conclusion: A. Nothing Can Be As Powerful As The Cross In Our Lives! 1. Rom. 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 2. It will cause us to see our sin and our need for repentance! a. Rom. 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? b. Ps. 38:2-4 For Your arrows pierce me deeply, And Your hand presses me down. 3 There is no soundness in my flesh Because of Your anger, Nor any health in my bones Because of my sin. 4 For my iniquities have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. c. Ps. 38:17,18 For I am ready to fall, And my sorrow is continually before me. 18 For I will declare my iniquity; I will be in anguish over my sin. d. Ps. 40:12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of my head; Therefore my heart fails me. 3. The Cross causes us to long for forgiveness and freedom from guilt! a. Ps. 51:2-5 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. 4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight-- That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. b. Ps. 51:10,12 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me 12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, B. Will You Stand At The Foot Of The Cross? Will You Be Touched DEEPLY In Your Heart By Asking, Is IT For ME Dear Savior? 9

Why did Jesus have to die?

Why did Jesus have to die? Why did Jesus have to die? The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised (Luke 9:22) The Son of man
