A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Many years ago as a young adult in the work world, I came back from a week of vacation. Of course, there was a pile of work waiting for me on my desk.

Then shortly before lunch, my boss came out of his office, cigar in his mouth (this was the olden days when people actually smoked in the workplace), poked his head into my office and said,

This past Monday was the longest day of the year for our school children as summer vacation officially came to an end and the 2016-2017 school year began.

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Many years ago as a young adult in the work world, I came back from a week of vacation. Of course, there was a pile of work waiting for me on my desk. Fortunately, no one bothered me all morning, and so I was able to spend several hours getting caught up. Even my boss did not speak to me all morning long. Then shortly before lunch, my boss came out of his office, cigar in his mouth (this was the olden days when people actually smoked in the workplace), poked his head into my office and said, ''Michael, welcome back. Longest day of the year.'' He then turned around, having said all there was to say, and returned to his office. This past Monday was the longest day of the year for our school children as summer vacation officially came to an end and the school year began. The first day of school is not only the longest day of the year, it is also the roughest. The kids have to be up at the crack of mid-morning and tear themselves away from all the pleasures of summer which include, but are not limited to, swimming, playing with their friends, and roaming the neighborhood playing Pokemon Go. But the beginning of the school year is also an exciting time. There are new people to meet, new things to learn, and new adventures to experience. The greatest adventure of life is that of learning. Life may provide experiences that excite us, but if we learning nothing, then those experiences are merely entertainment. Rather, true adventure means that we have an experience of life that teaches us and helps us to grow. It is the goal of our school not simply to teach but to make the experience of school an adventure. We want our students not only to learn new things but to grow from that experience of learning. Catholic schools are different from public schools in that the adventure of learning goes beyond the mind to include the spirit. Perhaps the greatest adventure we provide for our students is that of experiencing and coming to know God. Reading, writing, and arithmetic may help our students in life, but praying, worshipping, knowing and loving God will help them beyond this life. Catholic schools do not just prepare students for life; Catholic schools prepare students for eternity. So we welcome our students, faculty, and staff back to school for the great adventure of this new school year. We pray for their success and growth. We pray for the continued financial support of our school. We pray that the adventure of this coming year may prepare them for eternity. That is the best and most important thing we can give our students. After all, at the end of this life, when our vacation on this earth is over, when we meet God and God asks us what we learned in this adventure of life, that will truly be the longest day of the year. 3 TIME TO JOIN THE CHILDREN S CHOIR We are welcoming new members to our DI Children s Choir starting with practice on Sunday, September 11. We are looking for interested 2nd through 4th grade boys and girls from both Divine Infant School and the Religious Education classes who are willing to commit to weekly practices at 8:30 AM in Divine Infant School s music room and singing one Sunday a month at 9:30 mass during the school year. The children will sing at the Christmas Eve Family mass, Catholic Schools Week mass, Palm Sunday, Easter and more! We will welcome new 1 st graders after Christmas. Please join us in prayer APOSTLES FOR LIFE COMING TO DIVINE INFANT Apostles for Life, a teen pro-life group dedicated to working for prolife causes, is coming to Divine Infant on Labor Day Weekend to accept donations for a bike hike benefiting a pregnancy help center The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Some teens from Divine Infant are members of this group and would like to give our parish the opportunity to encourage them in their efforts to help women in need and their families. If you would like to have a tax receipt for your donation, they will have a form for you to fill out that weekend. If there are any teens from Divine Infant that would like to join their group, they would be delighted to have you. Just give them your name and contact information that weekend. Thank you. THE CATECHHUMENATE AT DIVINE INFANT The Divine Infant Catechumenate, also known as the RCIA--Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults--is a faith-sharing group for all people. We are here to help people who were never baptized, were baptized in the Catholic Church but not catechized and those who were baptized in another faith and would like to become members of the Catholic Church. If you attend Mass and want to know more about it or you want to have a closer relationship with Jesus, the catechumenate is for you! The catechumenate team will help you on your journey of faith. CALLING FOR: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION VOLUNTEERS Though this is only August, thoughts in the Religious Education Office are spinning around our theme for the year (PRAYER) and the need for a few more VOLUNTEERS to catechize or aide. We have a majority of veteran volunteers on our staff. They have been with us either since their children have entered the program or since they felt THE CALL in the heart to share faith with others. Training, materials and support are our promise to you. There are usually (75 minute) sessions from September to May. Take some quiet time during August to consider the answer you d give to this call. Classes begin Monday, September 19. MOVEMENT THERAPY FOR PARKINSON S AND NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS Current research shows that dance is an effective form of exercise therapy especially for individuals with neurological disorders. This structured adult dance class, using chairs for seated work, a ballet bar for balance and across the floor work aims to improve balance, coordination and overall physical and mental health. This class uses dance as therapy for rehabilitation of movement disorders and enhancement of motor learning. Note: Instructor was certified with Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). All participants are encouraged to consult with their physician before beginning this or any exercise program. Wear comfortable clothing. Classes start at Mayfair Recreation Center September 22nd. Alms are mercy translated into hands-on compassion. Jesus confirms Sirach's wisdom, "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy" (Matthew 5:7). "Conduct your affairs with humility" (Sirach 3:17). Humility: we're all alike and special, for we're children of God. Jesus confirms that wisdom, too: "Do not recline at table in the place of honor. Take the lowest place" (Luke 14:8, 10). In fact, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite friends, relatives, wealthy neighbors. Invite the poor, crippled, lame, blind," physically or figuratively, society's most vulnerable and marginalized, "who cannot repay you" (see 14:12-14). Jesus seems to be telling us to prepare for eternity with God's chosen by becoming their friend here and now. Mercy is measured not by our delight in welcoming those we like most or who can repay us best, but by sincerely embracing those we like least, who cannot repay us at all. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
