2 ALL ABOUT LENT This week we begin Lent with Ash Wednesday. This is a very important season for our spiritual well-being. The Church first started Lent as a time of purification and enlightenment for the adult catechumens preparing for Baptism at Easter. We are meant to accompany the catechumens on the final lap of their preparation to come into our faith. And even though we are baptized, we still need ongoing purification and enlightenment. Our Lenten tools, mentioned in the Gospel for Ash Wednesday, are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As for prayer some people attend daily Mass during Lent. The Lenten Scripture readings are a way to be enlightened. If you are unable to come to Mass, we will put the reading citations in the bulletin and you can look them up in your Bible and spend some time reflecting on what God is trying to tell you. Fasting used to be required daily during Lent for able-bodied adults. Many years ago, the Church dropped this requirement, not because it was unimportant to fast, but because there are other things from which people may need to fast. For example, give up TV, internet surfing, or some other form of indulgence. The Church expects us to be mature enough to pick what it is from which we need to fast. The final Lent tool is almsgiving. We need to help the poor. What we give should be a sacrifice and not left-over pocket change. There are numerous charities that need our money, including our own St. Vincent de Paul Society. And I hope all of you made a generous pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Besides monetary almsgiving there are the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Visit or call someone who is lonely. Encourage someone to come back to church. Be sure to come to our Mission this Lent sponsored by the four parishes in our Renew My Church grouping. What is most important is that each of us have a Lenten plan in place before we come to get ashes this Wednesday. How will you be praying this Lent? From what will you fast? How will you reach out in charity? It will be my sincere prayer that all of you will have a Lent in which you will be truly purified and spiritually enlightened. Father Mike Ahlstrom CHILDREN S CATECHUMENATE We have a number of children preparing for sacraments outside the usual pattern. We have one of our second graders preparing for Baptism and several others who have not yet received the sacraments of Penance and First Communion. We will celebrate the Rite of Election for them as prescribed by the Rite of Christian Initiation. They are elected or called and chosen to receive these sacraments at Easter. This Rite of Election will take place next Sunday at 9:30 Mass. There will be special readings from the Children s Lectionary. Be sure to pray for them.

3 2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Come, Follow Me This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Come, Follow Me was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. PARISH MISSION Again this year we will have a combined parish mission with the 4 churches in our Renew My Church grouping. Our grouping consists of Divine Infant, Divine Providence, St. Louise de Marillac, and St. Barbara. Here is the schedule: Tuesday, February 27, 7pm at St. Barbara. Fr. Fr. Michael Knotek will present Inspiring Witness. Tuesday, March 20, 7pm at Divine Providence. Fr. Tim Fiala. Lenten Reconciliation Liturgy. This will be the only Lenten Reconciliation Liturgy. Please mark your calendars and make every effort to join in this Mission. Not only will it be a good way to keep Lent, but it will be an excellent way to get to know the people of the parishes in our grouping. Wednesday of this week is Ash Wednesday. Ashes will be distributed during the 6:30 and 8:00 am Masses and during the 7:00 pm Mass. Ashes will also be distributed during Liturgy of the Word at 12:15 and 4:00 pm. LENTEN REGULATIONS (from February 14, 2018, Ash Wednesday, to the Paschal Triduum) Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian Initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance. (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, #27) By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. (On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance.

How DID Jesus begin Lent? He went to the desert. So as children of the Father in Heaven, let s imitate our brother Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit where He wants to lead us instead of planning Lent for ourselves. As a DI COMMUNITY we will collect DIAPERS for the Lagrange Women s Shelter. Bring them to the RE Office any time during Lent.

6 STEWARDSHIP FOR LENT HELPING ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday concerns itself with what has become a traditional threepart Lenten exercise: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Jesus instructs his followers to turn to God, to turn from self-interest and to deepen their relationship with the Lord in secret. He tells them in effect that a humble and quiet pattern of prayer, self-denial and reaching out to others is transforming and leads to a favorable outcome. What is our plan to turn ever closer to God in this Lenten season? Are we prepared to treat this season as a time to deepen our own relationship with the One who redeemed us? It has been a tradition at Divine Infant Jesus Parish to donate food, paper and cleaning products, and personal products to our St. Vincent de Paul society to distribute to members of our community in need. Below are specified items that may be donated during each week of Lent. These are merely suggestions and any food product, etc., is welcome at any time. Monetary donations are always appreciated as they are used to purchase gift cards and for emergencies. Our faith is reflected most strongly in our actions to help the most vulnerable, especially those who hunger. May God continue to bless your generous hearts. DISCOVERY CLUB SUPERVISOR NEEDED Discovery Club, Divine Infant s Before and After School Program, will have an open position of a part-time supervisor beginning in August. The morning days and hours would be as follows: Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. The afternoon hours would be 2:00 until 5:00/6:00 three or four days a week. The afternoon days to be determined. Our afternoons are filled with fun activities. The children love to color, do puzzles, play in the gym/outside, and do crafts. We need to be heavily staffed due to our large volume of children under the age of seven. Come join our Divine Infant family. The local campaign will be held at the Access Health Center th Street in Downers Grove. If you are able to participate at the center, you can contact them through their Facebook account (40 days for life Downers Grove, IL) or just go there and join those praying. If you are not able to physically be there, they ask for you to pray and fast as you are able. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God s will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God s help. Pray for the women, the innocent children, the men and women who carry the pain of a past abortion, the workers at the centers (Many have left and converted because of the peaceful prayer efforts of the 40 days for life campaign), for our local, regional and national leaders and for our Churches. Make this part of your Lenten prayer and sacrifice. Thank you and God bless.

Once again, our Women s Guild is hoping that you can help us with a donation that best reflects your company or business affiliation. Gift certificates and/or raffle items would be most appreciated. This fundraiser directly supports the educational needs of our students as well as maintenance and improvement of our school and church facilities. Due to funding reductions made statewide to private educators, our school relies on the kindness and generosity of others so that through fundraisers, we will be able to maintain and enhance our children s educational future. BIBLE STUDY ISRAEL S STORY, PART 2 Our Old Testament is divided into sections based on traditional understandings of the type of literature they represent. Anyone reading through the Old Testament in the order the books appear might find themselves challenged to appreciate their contribution to Israel s understanding of how they reflect the setting and period of history they arose from. This study explores Old Testament history, theology, and stories, from the division of the kingdom following the death of King Solomon, through the prophets to the southern kingdom of Judah, the Exile in Babylon, and the return to restore Jerusalem. This study also provides insights into how the rebuilding of the Temple following the exile and the influence of Greek culture in later periods gave rise to Jewish beliefs that shaped Jewish beliefs and practices in the time of Jesus. There will be six sessions, on Thursday evenings, at 7:30 pm in the rectory, beginning on February 15th. Study guide are available at the rectory. GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark's Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great "secret" revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God--not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus "humbled" himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today's healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God's reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. BAPTISMS: Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd & 3rd Sundays of the month at 12:45 pm. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory ( ) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
