2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR When I think back to my graduation from elementary school, there are only two things that I remember. First, it was a pleasant, summer evening in early June, and second, I wore a beige leisure suit. Based on that last piece of information, you can safely assume that I graduated in the mid 1970s. For those of you too young to remember the 1970s, the leisure suit was a fashion horror visited upon our nation briefly but spectacularly. It was composed of a pair of pants and a squarely cut jacket with excessive pockets and dramatically wide lapels. It was designed to be worn without a tie, and that, I suppose, is the one aspect that made the suit leisurely. Fashion is a ruthless and cyclical beast, so all we can do now is to pray that the leisure suit will never be resurrected from its place of eternal torment deep in the bowels of Fashion Hell. But on that pleasant, summer evening some 40 years ago, I was stylin'! I tell you this little bit of personal history so that you can have a laugh and also to celebrate and honor our 8th grade graduating class. This coming Monday evening we will hold our Commencement for our 8th grade, and today at the 9:30 Mass we celebrate their Baccalaureate liturgy. On both occasions, our graduates wear their caps and gowns -- not a leisure suit as far as the eye can see! We are very proud of our graduates. This is a very significant milestone in their young lives, and we are proud of their accomplishments and happy to see them moving forward in life. The next four years of high school will be years of tremendous learning and growth. Among other things, they will learn to drive, become old enough to vote in elections, and move on towards college and careers and adulthood. Today at the 9:30 Mass our parish has the opportunity to celebrate with and honor our graduates. Our graduates would not have achieved this accomplishment if it were not for you, the people of Divine Infant. Your support of our school for the past 69 years has made catholic education a possibility for thousands of children. Throughout the years, the graduates of Divine Infant have gone on to great things in life, and hopefully they have learned one very important lesson. Great things do not come without hard work and sacrifice. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and parishioners all participate in that hard work and sacrifice. Graduation, year after year, is the icon of the fruits of that hard work and sacrifice. All of you, students, teachers, parents, staff, and parishioners are to be commended. So congratulations to our 8th grade graduates. Good luck as you begin high school. Work hard, succeed, and continue to make us proud. And pray, always pray, that the leisure suit will forever remain in eternal torment deep in the bowels of Fashion Hell. Fr. 3 Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL archchicago.org Summer 2016 Jubilee of Mercy Dear Friends in Christ, On the weekend of June 11-12, 2016, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. Throughout the year, I have had several opportunities to meet many of our 206 retired priests who continue to share their priestly ministry in our parishes. It has come to my attention that many parishes depend upon their service for daily and Sunday Masses and for countless funerals. Without the help of our retired priests many parishes would have to reduce Mass schedules and other sacramental services. In April, it was my honor to celebrate the funeral Mass for Monsignor Richard O Donnell, our oldest priest. Monsignor O Donnell was 105 years old when he died. He was ordained a priest in 1935, which means he served as a priest of Chicago for almost 81 years. He spent his retirement years at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish where he had been pastor. Parishioners visited him every day and somewhere in that time his ministry was returned to him through their care and love. Our retired priests rely upon your help now. The Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. As you know the costs for health care, prescription drugs and nursing home care continues to increase. This special collection in June is different from the December collection for retired men and women religious where the collection goes to those in religious orders; Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from that collection. Many thanks to all of you for your most gracious generosity in this collection last year and I ask that you repeat that kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers, and your good wishes are an affirmation of our retired priests. With this letter, I wish to take this opportunity to share my heartfelt appreciation for the ministry and devotion of our retired priests and I ask you to remember all the faithful priests who have gone to their eternal reward. 4 It s hard to believe that the year is coming to an end already. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support of our school. A special thanks to all our volunteers who donated their efforts and many, many hours of their time given to coaching, fundraising activities, the school picnic, TRIP, decorating and grounds beautification, and helping with the weekly family packets, among other things. Yet the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this woman's material support, in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society's "peripheries." 7 CELEBRATING MEN DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE As we celebrate Father s Day in the month of June it is important to also recognize men s health issues. According to the Center for Disease Control, women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual exams and preventive services than men. Women are also more likely to address their anxiety issues as well. So, what health issues do men need to become aware of and what are some simple ways in which men can begin to stay healthy? Men are 2/3rds more likely to develop heart disease, hypertension, cancer and atrial fibrillation than women. Although the statistics are low, men just like women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast cancer is more prevalent in men between the ages of 60 and 70. It is important to remember that early stage prostate cancer usually has no symptoms. PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is a blood test that can often detect prostate related problems early. Testicular cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in men ages Self-examination is critical. If found early, testicular cancer is one of the most curable cancers. PTSD is unfortunately common among men who have been in the military. Men need to know that it treatable and they also need to know that they are not alone. Anxiety, depression and stress are very common issues among men. With that stated men are less likely to discuss their feelings with a healthcare professional and try to resolve their issues on their own. Workplace injuries are more prevalent for some men simply due to the dangers of their work environment. What can men do to stay healthy? Nutrition plays an important factor: Stop the super-size portions. Decrease the intake of red meats. Make sure to always eat breakfast. A good breakfast will boost your metabolism. Remember to do self-exams monthly. Make it a practice to see your primary care physician yearly as preventive medicine. Learn ways to de-stress. Get a monthly massage. Learn meditation. Take up walking. Take time for prayer. Dear God, We ask you to bless and protect the men in our lives. Keep them healthy and strong so that they may have the courage and perseverance to balance work, family and their faith life. Amen. Blessings, Jeannette Barczak
