1 THE CROWN
2 PASTOR S COLUMN 2 Christmas 2018 Dear Parishioners, On that first Christmas, the angels praised God, saying, Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to men of good will. The shepherds came and adored the newborn Savior. St. Luke wrote, And Mary treasured all of these things and reflected on them in her heart. We too need to pause and treasure the gift of Christmas in our hearts. And that gift is simply JESUS, true God who became true man, who came to reveal perfectly God s truth and love to us, who died and rose for our salvation, and who founded a Church where He is truly present today! Moreover, we must not let Christmas just be a passing day. Live in the spirit of Christmas each day. Reflect upon how to better treasure this gift each day by making prayer a critical part of your day, by continuing to read Sacred Scripture and the teachings of our Church, by having a stronger devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Mass, by regularly making a self-examination of conscience and going to Confession, and doing those good works for those entrusted to our care and for those in need. May such reflection of the gift of Christmas, move us by God s grace to an even more intimate relationship with our Lord this year. Lastly as your pastor, I treasure the gift of you and the dedication, sacrifices, and hard work you have shown to make this parish a beacon of Christ s love. In particular, I thank those who serve in the various ministries and organizations. On behalf of Father Tom, Father Jerry, myself, and all of the Staff at Divine Infant Parish, I wish each of you a blessed and joyful Christmas and New Year! Please, be assured of my prayers for your intentions and a remembrance at Holy Mass. May Divine Infant Jesus, patron of our parish, be present in your lives each day of the New Year! Please, remember our parish in your generous Christmas collection! 5 PARISH INFORMATION 5 THE CANDY CANE The candy cane begins with a stick of white candy. The white symbolizes the purity of Christ. Red Stripes remind us of the blood shed by Christ on the cross for us so that we may have eternal life. The candy cane is formed into a J to represent the precious name of Jesus. It also represents the staff of the Good Shepherd. Its hard consistency represents the Solid Rock, the foundation of the church and the firmness of the promises of Christ. LET US PRAY FOR THOSE WHO SERVE Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Keep them safe in their daily missions. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior. Amen. Major Matthew Kubik, United States Air Force We give our sincere thanks and appreciation to all veterans who have served their country. We continue to pray for our loved ones who are currently serving in the armed forces whether they are stationed overseas or in the United States. To submit a name of a family member and their military branch to add to a prayer list that is published in our Parish bulletin, please contact the rectory. THE PRINCIPAL, TEACHERS AND STAFF OF DIVINE INFANT SCHOOL WISH ALL A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
6 HARK THE HERALD ANGEL 6 What a fabulous evening of music - both vocal and instrumental! Congratulations to our Divine Infant students on their performance of Hark, the Herald Angel! 8 PARISH INFORMATION 8 MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient pagan Rome, these days in mid- December were a time for general slacking off at work and far too much rejoicing. The period of leisure after the harvest and a whole cluster of pagan festivals were a force for the church to reckon with. The Saturnalia, breaking out on December 17, was a time of high living and loose morals. Christians were advised by their bishops to drop out of the mayhem and do some serious fasting. A famous church council at Saragossa in Spain made a season of fasting mandatory from December 17 to December 23, exactly coinciding with the Saturnalia. The bishops at that time were perhaps less concerned with preparing for Christmas than with resisting the kind of loose living going on. Modern times have restored a bit of the Saturnalia spirit to our culture, so that a general period of partying with a vague connection to religion is now upon us. How does a Christian keep balance? The practice of charity by remembering the poor in our gift giving, of hospitality in finding a place at our holiday tables for the poor and lonely, and of daily prayer in the home and at church are great helps. Although Advent is not a penitential season like Lent, it is a time for making room in our lives for w h a t m a t t e r s m o s t. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. CHRISTMAS A young mother, her eyes shining with fatigue, who is arranging her hair; a father who finds himself alone with his pretty wife and baby, straightening the stable to make himself useful in some way; shepherds who bring cheese and perhaps also some curdled milk; sheep who look at their shepherds while bleating; a donkey who is eyeing his manger changed into a cradle; an adorable swaddled baby whom one calls Savior, Christ and Lord: This is the manifestation of the goodness and the tenderness of God. This is the most fantastic birth in the history of humanity, the one which changed the face of the world! This is how far God humbled and compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel!
