1 THE CROWN

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Many, many years ago, in a former life, in my youth, before I started to look like Santa Claus, I went on a few dates with a young woman whom I had met through a mutual friend. This woman was raised Catholic, but she did not practice her faith much anymore, and she found it interesting that I did practice my faith. So she asked me if she could come to Mass with me on a Sunday. I said, ''Well, okay, but only if you promise to hold my hand during the scary parts.'' She gave me a funny look and asked, ''What scary parts?'' ''He suffered death and was buried,'' I responded, ''He entered willingly into his Passion; eat my body, drink my blood. You know, the scary parts!" She laughed at me. And now I am a priest. So you know how that little romance worked out. But I was serious. If we really stop and think about what we do in Mass, we have to admit that there is some frightening stuff. But I like that. I like the scary, deadly serious nature of our liturgy and our faith, but that is not to say that I am not a big chicken in other ways. I have always loved the liturgy, and so I do well with that scary stuff. But there are some other things that really scare me about our faith, and this weekend is one of the scariest for me. This weekend we are observing the annual Summer Mission Appeal, and we are joined by Father Donatian Kaigoma, a priest of the Diocese of Geita in Tanzania. Father Donatian is making the Summer Mission Appeal at Divine Infant on behalf of the Diocese of Geita. For me, the thought of being a missionary in a foreign land and an unfamiliar culture is rather frightening. I like it here in the good old U. S. of A. I like what I know and who I know and the language that I speak. I have the highest respect for the missionaries of our Church who do the toughest job that Christ asks of us. They go into the whole world -- the whole world -- and proclaim the gospel to all peoples. That takes courage. That takes faith and prayer. It also takes resources. That is why the Archdiocese of Chicago has the annual Summer Mission Appeal. This is an opportunity for chickens like me who cannot imagine doing the work of the missions to help at least a little in the work of the missions. Missionaries need courage and faith. They also need material support. They need our financial support. So please be generous this weekend and help Fr. Donatian and the Diocese of Geita to continue to do the work of the Gospel in Tanzania. And I highly recommend that you attend Mass with someone who will hold your hand during the scary parts. Fr. Michael DEATH OF FR. JOYCE S SISTER My sister, Eileen Watts, died at 79 on June 17 one month to the day after my brother John died. She died after a week s illness at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, WI, close to Lake Delavan where she had lived for some years. She leaves our younger sister, Joanne Joyce (Florida) and four children: Kathleen (Evanston), Edward (Colorado), Michael (Co.Cork, Ireland) and John (Clarendon Hills), plus 6 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She taught for years in Catholic schools, until retiring. She received a beautiful funeral Mass/send-off on Tuesday at Divine Infant. My thanks to you for your prayers (Please continue!) and to our choir. May she rest in peace with her Lord of the Dance!

3 BAPTIZED Juan Carlos, son of Juan and Patricia (Villasenor) Covarrubias Liliana Maria, daughter of Juan and Patricia (Villasenor) Covarrubias Leo Manuel, son of Arnoldo and Ruby (Ramierez) DeHoyos Ryan Thomas, son of Daniel and Jacquelyn (Jarka) O Connor Candace Jean, daughter of Andy and Kelly (Puchta) Pak Tristan Michael, son of Michael and Jennifer (Berman) Rickert WEDDINGS Timothy Zabelka & Sarah Shilka NEW PARISHIONERS Carol Ciolino Timothy & Jacqueline Kouba, Tyler and Daniele HOLY HOUR THIS FRIDAY DURING THE FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM Join us this Friday, July 1, during this year s Fortnight for Freedom, at 7:30pm in the Church to pray for freedom of religion in our country. Each year dioceses and churches around the country arrange special events to highlight the importance of defending religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom is from June 21 the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More to July 4, Independence Day. We are Catholics. We are Americans. We are proud to be both, grateful for the gift of faith which is ours as Christian disciples, and grateful for the gift of liberty which is ours as American citizens. To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other. Our allegiances are distinct, but they need not be contradictory, and should instead be complementary. That is the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work together with fellow citizens for the common good of all who live in this land. That is the vision of our founding fathers and our Constitution, which guarantees citizens of all religious faiths the right to contribute to our common life together. We need, therefore, to speak frankly with each other when our freedoms are threatened. Now is such a time. As Catholic bishops and American citizens, we address an urgent summons to our fellow Catholics and fellow Americans to be on guard, for religious liberty is under attack, both at home and abroad. To all our fellow Catholics, we urge an intensification of your prayers and fasting for a new birth of freedom in our beloved country. We invite you to join us in an urgent prayer for religious liberty. Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal 5:1). We praise and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common good. Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; by your grace may we have the courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land. We ask this through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PLACE: Divine Providence School, 2500 Mayfair Avenue, Westchester DATE & TIME: Saturday, July 23 rd from 8 a.m. 3 p.m. Sponsored by the Westchester Lions Club in conjunction with the Lions of Illinois Foundation and Illinois Retina Associates, S.C. Held in conjunction with the Westchester Blood Drive For additional information, call Lion Andreas Brandt at REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD Everyone seems to have a to do list. They help us remember things we need to do. They help us set priorities as we pick and choose which things to attend to and which to let go. We can tell what our priorities are if we look at which items stay on the list for a long time. We keep finding endless reasons why we can t get to the most difficult tasks just yet. Maybe later. Or maybe never. Discipleship is one of those difficult tasks that some of us just never get around to doing. Like Elisha, or the people Jesus speaks with in the Gospel, we are always tempted to do something else first get a decent job, buy a house, get in shape, find a mate, raise our children, retire. But, also like Elisha, we are called not to delay and not to look back. Jesus tells us to delete everything else from our to do lists and write just one thing: Go and proclaim the kingdom of God. Despite its name, it is not one person telling another what to do. Rather, it is a dialogue through which we discover and discuss with a director the action of God s Spirit in our life. The director is only a facilitator in the process, or as Thomas Merton aptly says, "The director is merely God s usher, confirming and validating where God is calling me. During each monthly meeting, the director and the directee seek to enter into a prayerful conversation attentive to the Holy Spirit who is, in fact the Real Director. We invite you to examine the question, "What is God up to in my life?" Mayslake Ministries is a leader in the field of Spiritual Direction, with twenty-five certified spiritual directors on staff, each skilled in a wide variety of areas including: grief, addiction, adoption and infertility, elder issues, military, oncology issues, Women s and Men s Spirituality.
