2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Of all the holidays in the year, my least favorite is New Year's Day. First, it seems to me that merely changing the calendar hanging on the refrigerator is hardly cause for celebration. Secondly, I have always been an early bird and so have absolutely no interest in staying up until midnight. That is why one of my favorite holidays of the year is today: New Liturgical Year's Day -- properly known as the First Sunday of Advent. There is a very different feel today than on the first day of January. Today we have no parties, no noise makers, no countdown until midnight, and no day of watching football and sobering up. Rather, Advent begins much more quietly and much more reflectively. In the darkest time of the year, we begin anew by simply lighting one violet candle and praying, 'Come, Lord Jesus.'' That prayer beseeching Christ to come works on two levels. First, we pray for Christ to come to us in history, in the moment of the Incarnation, in his birth in Bethlehem. This is simply part of our anticipation of and preparation for our celebration of Christ's nativity at Christmas. It is a liturgical prayer. We already know that that prayer has been answered. But there is another level to that prayer. It is our way of imploring Christ to continue to come into our world and our lives. Christ's birth is an historical reality, but it does not necessarily make an impact in our lives. So that prayer for Christ to come is the expression of our desire and need for us to open ourselves to Christ and invite him to be active in our lives once again and in new ways. This is precisely what our Archdiocese is trying to do in Renew My Church. Renew My Church is a multi-year initiative to ensure the sustainable growth of our Church for the future. It will create vital, vibrant, life-giving, Catholic communities across the Archdiocese of Chicago and inspire disciples to accompany all members of our family of faith to seize this moment to make the mission of Christ our own. Renew My Church will call us to face our challenges and boldly re-imagine what it means to be Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We must be willing to leave behind familiar ways of doing things to carry out Christ's mission in our communities. Parishes have been organized into groupings, and these groupings will begin to address the priorities of evangelization, vocations, and leadership. Divine Infant is grouped with Divine Providence, St. Louise de Marillac, St. Barbara, Mater Christi, the Czech Mission in Brookfield. The Archdiocese will begin Renew My Church with a pilot group this winter, and over the course of the next three years, every group will begin working. It might be tempting to think that Renew My Church is just a way to close parishes, but that is a very mistaken perception. As Cardinal Cupich put it, the reality is that parishes will have to close in the Archdiocese, but after doing so, will we be any better off? That is why Renew My Church is so important. It is the opportunity for everyone -- all catholics in the Archdiocese -- to work together to foster mission vitality and inspire discipleship. Our current model of parish is strained and struggling, but the call and mission of Christ is as vital and important as ever. So we must look at how we live that call and mission and what changes, adaptations, and growth are needed to keep the mission that Christ has given us vibrant and inspiring. At some point in the coming year, we will learn when our parish grouping is to begin working together formally. However, the other pastors in our grouping and I have already begun working together on certain areas such as youth ministry, spiritual growth and formation, and our Catholic schools. As your pastors, we see the critical importance of Renew My Church and we want it to succeed. When the time comes for us to invite your participation, I hope that you will be just as eager to help us in this effort to grow and strengthen our local Church so that we can continue to do the work Christ has charged us to do. Renew My Church is, in effect, our new year's resolution. It is our commitment to do the challenging, difficult and exciting work of being Church in the Archdiocese so that all of us, with one heart and mind and voice, can pray together, ''Come, Lord Jesus,'' and truly experience him with us anew. 5 SYMBOLISM OF THE ADVENT WREATH The symbolism of the Advent Wreath is conveyed in its shape, construction and accompanying ritual. The circular shape points to the continuum of life; there is no beginning or end, rather, eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Fresh evergreen branches entwined together, shaped like the crown of thorns during Christ s Passion, remind us of the New Life promised to us by Christ in the Paschal Mystery. Lit candles represent the light of Christ; light to drive away sin and death as we are reborn in the Light of Christ, a share in the Incarnation. While the purple candles stand for preparation and penance, the white candle of the Third or Gaudete (Lt. rejoice ) Sunday, is the color of joy; the waiting is almost over. The Prayer of Blessing on the First Sunday of Advent before the lighting of the first candle beautifully expresses the hope the Advent Wreath symbolizes: Lord, God, your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin. Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candles of this wreath; may their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever. Amen. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L. GIVING TREE Hopefully you've noticed the Giving Tree for St. Martin de Porres Parish in the vestibule of the Church. Please take an ornament with the age of the recipient on it, fill in the size if applicable, and return the wrapped package to the vestibule by Sunday December 11th. Due to the increased need, we are concentrating on the younger age groups this year. Thank you for your generosity! ADVENT: A SEASON OF HOLY WAITING The liturgical season of Advent developed as a time of preparation for Christmas. Because it evolved in some areas where baptism at Epiphany was the custom, it had a penitential character. Overtones of this remain in our present day, so we do not sing the Gloria and the liturgical color of the season is violet. Now the focus of Advent is both to recall the first coming of the Son of God, the Incarnation and to prepare for the second coming of the Son of God, the Eschaton; the promise fulfilled and the promise to be fulfilled. Advent is a time of great beauty; a time of not knowing, a time of quiet, Holy Waiting. The gift of the Savior is new for us each year and as seen through a child s eyes, will fill us with awe and wonder. That Advent comes during the darkest time of the year is a gift in itself. It is easier to be still, and quietly wait, in the dark. The Child born in the night, quietly, in humble surroundings among ordinary people, tells us that out of this simple birth will come great joy and inner peace. Advent is always a new beginning, a time of spiritual renewal when we can grow closer to Jesus and have a deeper understanding of Him in our lives. So, these four weeks we prepare, wait and pray, For you, O Lord, my soul in stillness waits, truly my hope is in you. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L.

6 PREPARE, WAIT, AND PRAY Lord, God, your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin. As we enter the liturgical season of Advent, we are called to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Holy Child, to wait quietly and ponder the wonder of the Incarnation. We pray for spiritual renewal and a deeper understanding of our relationship with Jesus Christ. This time of Holy Waiting should be a new beginning, a time to contemplate the awesome gift God gives us in His Son. The readings for the four Sundays of Advent help us to remember the true meaning of this Season. The various symbols and colors we have in the church: the Christmas tree, the Crèche, the Wreath and Violet linen, are visible reminders of what the Scripture passages proclaim. Each of these symbols will be displayed in the church gradually during the weeks preceding the Nativity of the Lord, to help you really get ready for the Christ Child. Saint Paul guides us on the First Sunday of Advent, Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. The first candle of the Advent Wreath will be lit. Christ is our armor of light. Taking the shape of a crown, the wreath reminds us of His Royal birth, the son of David. The Advent Wreath helps to see the promise of Eternal Life, but we are also reminded of the crown of thorns during Christ s Passion. On the Second Sunday of Advent, the Gospel of Matthew tells us about John the Baptist urging us to repent and prepare the way of the Lord, saying, I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I.He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. The Holy Family will make its appearance in the side aisle. In Mary and Joseph, we learn of complete surrender to God, doing His will with hope and faith, trusting in the Lord. The First Reading for the Third Sunday of Advent is taken from Isaiah, telling us God comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Those whom the Lord has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy. The references to royalty will be reflected in the violet linen seen in the sanctuary. While the color is that of kings, Jesus reminds us in the Gospel that, those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Our Savior is the King of kings, but His humble birth was in a manger, a Crèche, the feeding trough of the stable. Rather than living as a titled man of privilege, Jesus came to serve all of humanity and we are called to serve each other. Just as a manger is used to feed the animals in the stable, Jesus feeds us. He is the Bread of Life. On the side altar, you will see the Crèche, the place of Jesus Nativity. On the Fourth Sunday of Advent the Christmas trees will be in the sanctuary and wreaths will be hung in the nave of the church. The Christmas tree, an ever-green, is regarded as a symbol of life, and the star on top as the Light of the World, Jesus, our Savior. The Second Reading from Paul to the Romans explains, Through him we have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith, for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles, among whom you are also, who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. Our baptismal call to become members of the Body of Christ grants us the promise of salvation, but not without struggle in our earthly lives. During Advent, come to Mass on Sunday and during the week. Pray together for the Liturgy of the Hours, and meditate on the true meaning of Christmas by thinking about the different symbols of Christmas that are present in the church. Advent can be a very fruitful season, freed from distractions if we heed the words of Saint James, Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. 7 HOLIDAY REMEMBRANCE EVENT Holidays can be the most difficult time of the year for someone who has experienced the death of a close family member or friend. Our Holiday Remembrance Event is intended to help people cope with the grief they may face during the holiday season. We would like to extend an invitation to you and a guest, who have experienced a loss of a loved one this year. This event will be an interactive session of reflection and hope. Rev. Denis Condon will provide opening and closing prayers. We have invited Meg Eifrig, L.C.P.C. as the keynote speaker to share with you her insight about dealing with grief and loss during the holiday season and ways to promote a pathway of healing. We will also have Rev. Dan Willis who will present us with words of healing and comfort. Please join us to pay tribute for those we have lost. BE PREPARED Be prepared. It's that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can't escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? 10 OVER 50 CLUB A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all from the Board of Officers. A reminder there will be no meeting in December. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory ( ) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
