1 THE CROWN

2 ANGER Anger is listed as one of the seven capital sins. It is important to recognize that anger of itself is not a sin. It is a feeling. Feelings are never sins. Sin is what we do with the feeling when we allow it to control our life, rather than we controlling what we do with our emotion. God created our feelings of anger. Anger can be a very good thing. The Bible is full of examples of God being angry. Jesus was often anger with those he loved, including his hand chosen apostles. Anger is good because it alerts us to when an important belief is being violated. It energizes us to resist evil and fight for what is right and just. Jesus was angry with his apostles when he caught them arguing about who was the most important. His anger led him to teach if they want greatness, they must be like little children and be of service to one another. Jesus was very angry with Peter and called him names when he tried to talk Jesus out of his cross. Jesus was especially angry with phonies. He drove the money changers from the temple and upset the local economy. Jesus' anger turned many people against him. Anger becomes a sin, not when we feel it deeply, but when we allow our emotion to take control of our will and our actions. Anger turning into violence is the most obvious example. For example, rape is about misplaced anger, not lust. Some people use anger as a way of controlling others. Yelling at others and intimidating them is what gets what someone wants. Unbridled anger becomes rage. We lose all control of our actions. Uncontrolled anger is the sin and not the feeling. We need to befriend and tame our anger. It can be a wonderful companion to serve us well. Read the Letter of James beginning with Chapter 3. This explains how we can have our anger run our lives, or we can choose to tame our tongue and use it for good. A person who is always calm and never experiences anger is not a whole person. Anger is part of our human make up. But we need to take charge or our anger so it can serve us instead of destroy us. Perhaps we can sit down and have a talk with our anger. Give it a name. Thank him for being there, but let him know your are in charge. Yes you will pay attention to him, but he does not get to run your life. An Anger Prayer Lord God of all creation, I thank you for creating me with feelings of anger. Thank you for the anger that wakes me up to injustice and wrongdoing. But Lord, I need your help to take charge of my anger. I want it to serve me and not run my life. Help me to befriend and tame this powerful emotion you have given me. May my anger help me to serve your justice. May I have the strength to communicate honestly all that I feel. Help me to govern what I do with my feelings. Bless those who are the object of my anger. Grant honest communication and fruitful peace between us. May our powerful feelings help us to build up your kingdom. This is my prayer in the name Jesus. Amen. Father Mike CATHOLIC CEMETERIES Consultants from the Catholic Cemeteries will be present at Divine Infant Jesus this weekend to talk about the importance of pre-planning your burial arrangements and answer any questions you may have relating to the purchase of graves, crypts or cremation burial. They will also address both their interest-free purchase payments program, and the special one-time-only discount program available to Divine Infant Parishioners. The consultants will be present at all of the Masses. Please stop by to say hello. On Monday, February 5th at 7:00 pm in Langan Hall, Deacon Glenn Tylutki, Outreach Coordinator for the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese, will hold an evening workshop on It s your funeral, shouldn t you be part of the planning? The workshop will outline and discuss your burial RIGHTS as a Catholic and the meaningful Liturgical RITES offered by the Church including: the Vigil (Wake), the Funeral Mass, and the final committal in a Catholic Cemetery. Cremation, Scripture Readings, Songs, Eulogies and your questions will be the topics and foundation of this most informative meeting. Light refreshments and sweet desserts will follow.

3 CALLING ALL 1st GRADERS TO JOIN DI CHILDREN S CHOIR The Divine Infant Children s Choir is welcoming 1 st graders to join the group of 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th graders as they prepare for the Lent and Easter seasons. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Come, Follow Me Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme for 2018 is Come, Follow Me. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus call to Come, Follow Me. After our parish goal is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Use this form to request your Church Donation Statement for 2017 Tax preparation. Drop the completed form in the collection basket or call the rectory Name Address Envelope Number

6 DUELING PIANOS Saturday, March 24 th Tickets go on sale Sunday, March 4 th MUSIC GROUPS WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Lent/Easter season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our rehearsal on Wednesday, February 7, from 7:15 PM until 9:15 PM in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that rehearsal. The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song yearround. New membership to this group is encouraged at the beginning of summer. The DI Resurrection Choir sings year-round at funerals. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice and availability for funerals Monday through Saturday usually at 10am when there is a funeral. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Judy Schindler, our organist, who coordinates this ministry. Our Children s Choir is welcoming new members during February. Specifically, let s encourage our 1st graders to get started singing in our program. There is a separate invitation in this CROWN regarding our 1st graders (both from our School and Religious Education programs). For further information about any of our music groups, please contact Janet Reif, Music Director, at jreif@me.com, or call the rectory and leave a message for her to contact you. RESOURCE CENTER Caregiver, companion, cleaning, housekeeping available 2-3 days per week. Please call Grace Hospital bed to be given away. Please call Joe BIBLE STUDY ISRAEL S STORY, PART 2 Our Old Testament is divided into sections based on traditional understandings of the type of literature they represent. Anyone reading through the Old Testament in the order the books appear might find themselves challenged to appreciate their contribution to Israel s understanding of how they reflect the setting and period of history they arose from. This study explores Old Testament history, theology, and stories, from the division of the kingdom following the death of King Solomon, through the prophets to the southern kingdom of Judah, the Exile in Babylon, and the return to restore Jerusalem. This study also provides insights into how the rebuilding of the Temple following the exile and the influence of Greek culture in later periods gave rise to Jewish beliefs that shaped Jewish beliefs and practices in the time of Jesus. There will be six sessions, on Thursday evenings, at 7:30 pm in the rectory, beginning on February 15th. Study guide are available at the rectory. Cost is $16.00 The annual Divine Infant Women s Guild Mother/ Son Bowling Event will be held on Saturday, March 3rd this year. A Raffle is a highlight of this event. Thanks to the generosity and assistance of people like you, many individuals and businesses participated in the success of last year s Raffle! Once again, our Women s Guild is hoping that you can help us with a donation that best reflects your company or business affiliation. Gift certificates and/or raffle items would be most appreciated. This fundraiser directly supports the educational needs of our students as well as maintenance and improvement of our school and church facilities. Due to funding reductions made statewide to private educators, our school relies on the kindness and generosity of others so that through fundraisers, we will be able to maintain and enhance our children s educational future. Funds raised by our Women s Guild may cover the cost of curricular activities such as music, computer technology and educational scholarships. This event reaches hundreds of women in attendance including our school, parish and community. Please help us achieve our fundraising goal! Thank you for your time. If you have any questions, please contact Jeanine Dent All donations are due February 27th. Thank you.
