2 THE LAW OF THREE Does the fact that we believe that God is one, but three distinct persons, have any practical influence on your everyday life? I would like to submit it should have a powerful influence, but for too many of us it does not. We do not get the Trinity. You might say that how can anyone get the Trinity. We need to get the Law of Three. There is only one God, but three persons. The Father is not the Son. The Son is not the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit is not the Father. Yet the Father is God, as is the Son. Also, the Holy Spirit is God. They are all God, but they are not each other. What we need to discover is that God by definition is a relationship. The only definition the Bible gives to God is to say God is love. God is so deeply in love, that he is love. God cannot be who God is without being love. The love of the Father for the Son is so great that this love is the Holy Spirit. So, what is the practical influence this mind-boggling doctrine should have? It should say a lot about how we relate to one another. We all experience conflict with the other. Dualism is our biggest enemy. We categorize them vs. us. There are good guys and bad guys. You see this dualism in politics, in the workplace, among terrorists, and even among church people. The Trinity teaches us the law of three. Our problems are never solved by eliminating or silencing the opposition. We need to see a third force (The Holy Spirit, The Spirit of Love) that helps us balance our differences as something positive. Let me give an example. A husband and wife are quarreling with much bitterness. They come to me for help. I do not take sides and decide who is right and who is wrong. Rather I help them listen to one another. They both have something positive to offer the other. The solution is not his way, or her way, but to discover our way. It is the law of three, or the Trinity applied that becomes the solution. And so, in our liturgy we pray to the Father, through the Son, with and in the Holy Spirit. God the Father creates, God the Son redeems, and God the Holy Spirit sustains us. The Father says his Word, which is his Son. Their boundless love is the Holy Spirit. A man and woman love each other, and that love produces a child in imitation of the Trinity. A lot to think about and pray about! Happy Trinity Sunday. SOME HOMEWORK Take each of the three persons of the Trinity. What does each one mean to you? Thank each one for what they do for you. MISSION SUNDAY Today is our annual Summer Mission Appeal. We welcome Father Lukas Batmomolin, SVD to our parish today. Please keep the Divine Word Missionaries in prayer. Thank you for your support of these dedicated missionaries. RETIRED PRIEST APPEAL Next weekend will be our appeal to help retired priests. Because our Mission appeal was this weekend, we postponed the second collection to help retired priests from this weekend until June 10/11. Most of the money collected is to help priests who need extraordinary medical or nursing home care. When they run out of personal funds, the Archdiocese comes to the rescue. Because of the extraordinary cost of medical assistance, your generosity next weekend is needed and appreciated. Father Mike Ahlstrom

3 100 TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR LADY S SECOND APPEARANCE AT FATIMA TUESDAY, JUNE 13, 2017 PRAY THE ROSARY IN CHURCH Next Tuesday, June 13, is the 100 th anniversary of the second appearance of Our Lady to the three children at Fatima, Portugal. Our Lady asked us to pray the Rosary for peace in the world and asked for sacrifices offered for love of Jesus, the conversion of sinners and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Here at Divine Infant we have been praying the Rosary every Monday through Saturday before the 8am Mass since We pray for the end to abortion, the poor souls in purgatory, the sick of the parish, freedom of religion in our country and the evangelization of the Divine Infant Community. When we finish the Rosary, we pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and then have the wonderful opportunity to celebrate Mass. We invite you to join us any time you can all year round. We usually start praying between 7:20 and 7:25. On this Tuesday, since it is the 100 th anniversary of the second apparition at Fatima, we would love to have Divine Infant packed with parishioners praying the Rosary, not only for our normal petitions, but also, as Our Lady said, for the love of Jesus, peace in the world, the conversion of sinners and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Please consider taking time before your day gets rolling to join us at 7:15am on June 13 th in Church to pray. (We will start a few minutes early that day to add prayers to Our Lady). If possible, stay for the Rosary, the Chaplet and the Mass. Offer the sacrifice of sleep that day for the intentions of Our Lady. It is a great way to start any day and a way to remember our Heavenly Mother during this anniversary year. PLENARY INDULGENCE ON JUNE 13 TH For the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, Pope Francis has decided to grant a plenary indulgence opportunity throughout the entire anniversary year, which began Nov. 27, 2016, and will end Nov. 26, To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: Go to confession and Communion, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. One way applies to the pious faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October (2017), and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. Regarding this second way, the rector of the Fatima Shrine told CNA that the visit to the statue of the Virgin does not necessarily have to be only at Fatima or exclusively in Portugal, but can be done anywhere in the world. Those seeking an indulgence must also pray an Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima. One of our parishioners has a statue of Our Lady of Fatima that actually comes from Fatima and was touched to the original statue at Fatima! She has agreed to bring it to Church on the 13 th. Come and join us in praying at 7:15am on Tuesday and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. 4 TRINITY SUNDAY Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the central mystery of Christian faith. The word trinity comes from the Latin trinus, meaning threefold. We believe that God exists as a communion of three divine, distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-- the Triune God. While we are unable to explain this with our intellect, we express our belief in the Trinity through our prayers and actions. Upon entering the church, we bless ourselves with Holy Water, making the Sign of the Cross. The Mass begins and ends in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The trinitarian formula is used in the Rite of Baptism, following Christ's directive to the Apostles found in Matthew 28 to baptize all nations. We acknowledge the saving work of God who has redeemed us through Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. When we consider the Holy Trinity, there are some basic beliefs that can help us to understand the mystery of God's revelation to humanity. Though there are three Divine Persons, Christianity is monotheistic; there is one God. All three Persons have the same divine nature, that of the eternal Father. In Sacred Scripture, Jesus prayed to the Father and promised to send us an Advocate, the Holy Spirit. In Galatians 4, St. Paul explains God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts crying, Abba! Father! From this we understand that God sent His Son and the Spirit. The development of the doctrine or teaching of the Church about the Trinity began in the Councils of the Church, most notably the First General Council of Nicaea, in 325. In describing Jesus, the Council used the Greek word, homoousios, of one substance, or being with the Father. We declare this in the Nicene Creed at Mass when we say consubstantial with the Father. By 675, the Eleventh Council of Toledo declared the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity, one and equal with the Father, and proceeded from both the Father and the Son. As time went on, the General Council of Florence, around 1440 reaffirmed these beliefs, as did Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II in their writings. Today during Mass, in the Preface of the Most Holy Trinity for the Eucharistic Prayer we pray, For with your Only Begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord: not in the unity of a single person, but in a Trinity of one substance. From the mystery of the Holy Trinity, this unity of three Persons in communion, can we apply this to our life of faith? Each week, we gather as many separate, distinct persons, but we are also in communion with each other, sharing in the same beliefs and sacramental life. Our prayers and ritual actions in the liturgy bring us together, united in the same spirit of love of God and charity toward each other as members of the Body of Christ. We receive the Holy Body and Blood of Christ and proclaim, Amen. We then go out and act in the world, sharing this divine life with others. When we share in the joy of the perfect community of the Holy Trinity, we can then bring the joy of that Spirit to those we meet. We understand, not with our intellect but with hearts of faith, for when we share in the Spirit, we possess the love of the Father, the grace of the Son and the fellowship of the Spirit himself.
