2 ADVENT: HE IS COMING! Happy New Year! I wish you this because today is the first day of the year in the Church s calendar. Our new season is called Advent. This means coming. We prepare for the coming of the Lord. Most folks think about the historical coming of the baby Jesus as found in Chapter 1 of Matthew, told from Joseph s perspective; and Luke Chapter 2 told from Mary s perspective. Matthew goes on to talk about the Magi and flight into Egypt. Only Luke has shepherds and angels and the story of no room in the inn. But we are getting ahead of ourselves. Advent says very little of the birth of Jesus. Rather there are three different Advent themes: 1. The Second Coming of Christ found in the scripture of the First Sunday of Advent. 2. The Second and Third Sundays of Advent speak of the Lord coming to us here and now. John the Baptist is our focus as he prepares the way of the Lord. 3. It is only on the fourth Sunday of Advent that we turn to Jesus coming long ago, as we hear the story of the Annunciation in the Gospel. All three of these themes speak to our Advent spirituality. We prepare for Christ to come again at the end of time. We make ready for him to come here and now. And finally, we remember his coming long ago, so we can better be prepared for his coming to us now. Purple is our Advent color and we do not sing the Gloria on the Sundays. Each week we light one more candle on our Advent wreath to show the ever-growing nearness of the Lord. The underlying question we all must ask ourselves is, What do I need to do to make room for Christ? What must I do to prepare the way of the Lord in my own life situation? I am speaking at all the Masses this First Sunday of Advent to give you the state of the parish as I see it. I am sharing what I see as three pieces of good news, followed by three pieces of bad news, followed by three signs of hope for the future. Fr. Michael Ahlstrom P.S. I regret that I missed Santa s Workshop and Bazaar, I had a funeral and thought I would be back in time, but that did not happen. I hear great reports and congratulate all who worked so hard to make this a success. Upcoming events: Next Sunday at 9:30 Mass we will have a simple rite of becoming a catechumen for some of our children preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. On Saturday, December 16, we will have our Advent Penance Rite. We have it at 10:00 am to accommodate those who do not like to go out in the evening. THE ANNUAL PARISH REPORT I have included some pie charts along with the figures. Here is a summary of what I am saying at each Mass: The Good News 1. We have many generous people who volunteer their time and pitch in whenever needed to get things done. 2. We are able to pay all our parish bills and have money in the bank. We went over our goal for both The To Teach Who Christ Is campaign and the Annual Catholic Appeal. 3. We have an excellent school with a very good faculty and enthusiastic student body that excels in high school. The Bad News 1. 80% of our people are missing on any given Sunday. Our October count is down 13.5% from last year. Too many people are not practicing their faith. Weddings are down and funerals up. 2. Our school is a financial challenge. Like most schools the parish must give a subsidy to keep it going. Our subsidy is coming from our savings which will rapidly be depleted. 3. While our school enrollment is up this year, it is not where it should be. We need to promote Catholic schools. And we have no youth ministry for teens. Our Hope for the Future: Renew My Church 1. We can use RMC to spearhead evangelization: form intentional disciples and build up a stronger sense of community. 2. We can build up a sense of collaboration with the parishes in our grouping and face our school challenges and insure the future of Catholic education. 3. By inter parish collaboration we could begin a viable youth ministry.

This is our annual drive to make Christmas a little brighter for children ages infant to 13.Please take an ornament with the age of the child and return the wrapped package with the ornament on top. GOD HAS A DIFFERENT PLAN We begin the season of Advent with a heartfelt call for our own repentance. We remember God's faithful love for us, and call upon God to help us to turn back. For "behold, you are angry, and we are sinful" (Isaiah 64:4). In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God's promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We call upon God's might and power in order to save us. With Isaiah, we ask God to "rend the heavens and come down, / with the mountains quaking before you" (Isaiah 63:19). Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of God's hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise and glory. 7 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, December, 2017 On the Second Sunday of Advent, parishes throughout the Archdiocese will participate in the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, benefiting more than 32,000 elderly Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests throughout the United States. Our senior religious are a treasure. Their dedication and hard work laid the foundation for Catholic schools, hospitals, and numerous social service organizations. Many continue in volunteer ministry today. Their ongoing prayer and witness enrich our faith in countless ways. Personally, I am grateful for the service of religious, past and present. Perhaps you also recall a sister or brother who made a positive difference in your life. Most elder religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. Rising health-care costs and decreased income compound the challenge to meet such dayto-day needs as medications and nursing assistance. The Retirement Fund for Religious offers financial support that helps religious communities provide loving care for older members while ensuring younger members can continue the good work of their elders. In the past, the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago have led the nation in their generous response to this appeal. Though I understand you are asked to support many worthy causes, I invite you to contribute what you can at masses the weekend of December Most importantly, please pray for God s continued blessing on all our women and men religious. ADVENT: A SEASON OF HOLY WAITING The liturgical season of Advent developed as a time of preparation for Christmas. Because it evolved in some areas where baptism at Epiphany was the custom, it had a penitential character. Overtones of this remain in our present day, so we do not sing the Gloria and the liturgical color of the season is violet. Now the focus of Advent is both to recall the first coming of the Son of God, the Incarnation and to prepare for the second coming of the Son of God, the Eschaton; the promise fulfilled and the promise to be fulfilled. Advent is a time of great beauty; a time of not knowing, a time of quiet, Holy Waiting. The gift of the Savior is new for us each year and as seen through a child s eyes, will fill us with awe and wonder. That Advent comes during the darkest time of the year is a gift in itself. It is easier to be still, and quietly wait, in the dark. The Child born in the night, quietly, in humble surroundings among ordinary people, tells us that out of this simple birth will come great joy and inner peace. Advent is always a new beginning, a time of spiritual renewal when we can grow closer to Jesus and have a deeper understanding of Him in our lives. 10 LITURGICAL CALENDAR AT A GLANCE! Vestibule: North side bulletin boards Beginning this weekend you will be able to follow the current Liturgical season by viewing the glass enclosed bulletin boards located on the North wall of the Vestibule of the Church. The season will be simply highlighted and the color of the particular season will be displayed. Just as colors change around us as we go through the secular seasons, so, too, they change with the Liturgical seasons. The colors of the Liturgical year are also reflected in the vestments that the priest wears at Mass and often in the Church environment. The first season of the Liturgical year is Advent, the holy season of anticipation and longing for the coming of Jesus into our lives (the Incarnation). 14 IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On December 8, the whole Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the Patronal Feastday of the United States of America. The dogma, from the Greek meaning an opinion or decree, of Mary being free from original sin, has a long tradition in the Church. After the Council of Ephesus (431) declared Mary the divine Mother of God, the Theotokos, later Ecumenical Councils continued making pronouncements about the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Lateran Council (649) affirmed her as holy Mary, ever virgin and immaculate. By 1477, Pope Sixtus IV, encouraged celebration of the feast and considered the Immaculate Conception as a doctrine, or teaching of the faith, writing, all the faithful of Christ should give thanks and praise to almighty God for the wonderful conception of the immaculate virgin and should celebrate the Mass and other divine offices and attend them. In 1846, the bishops of the United States declared Mary patroness or intercessor of the United States, under the title of Immaculate Conception. It was Pope Pius IX, who affirmed the doctrine of Mary s conception, free from original sin or immaculate. He wrote a papal bull, a document with a bulla, from the Latin for lead seal, on December 8, 1854, Ineffabilis Deus, The God Ineffable. In it he promulgated or formally proclaimed that the most Blessed Virgin Mary was from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace of almighty God, immune from all stain of original sin, revealed by God and firmly and constantly to be believed by all the faithful. Mary has a twofold role in the work of salvation. Her willingness to follow the divine will of God as the Mother of our Savior and then as heavenly intercessor for all the faithful, grants her a unique place in salvation history. We specially honor her as the Mother of God and the Mother of all the faithful. Let us come together to celebrate in the liturgy she whom God placed above all others to be for your people an advocate of grace and a model of holiness. SYMBOLISM OF THE ADVENT WREATH The symbolism of the Advent Wreath is conveyed in its shape, construction and accompanying ritual. The circular shape points to the continuum of life; there is no beginning or end, rather, eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Fresh evergreen branches entwined together, shaped like the crown of thorns during Christ s Passion, remind us of the New Life promised to us by Christ in the Paschal Mystery. Lit candles represent the light of Christ; light to drive away sin and death as we are reborn in the Light of Christ, a share in the Incarnation. While the purple candles stand for preparation and penance, the pink candle of the Third or Gaudete (Lt. rejoice ) Sunday, is the color of joy; the waiting is almost over. The Prayer of Blessing on the First Sunday of Advent before the lighting of the first candle beautifully expresses the hope the Advent Wreath symbolizes: Lord, God, your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin. Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candles of this wreath; may their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever. Amen. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory ( ) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
