2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR On Monday the 5th of September, I had the pleasure and honor of doing something for the very first time. On that previous Sunday, the 4th, Pope Francis had canonized Mother Theresa, thus adding her to the canon, or official record, of saints as St. Theresa of Calcutta. Pope Francis chose to canonize St. Theresa on the 4th because the 5th was the anniversary of her death, and thus the 5th of September became her feast day. So on that Monday, everyone at the 8am Mass and I celebrated the sanctoral liturgy of St. Theresa of Calcutta for the first time. I truly admire St. Theresa of Calcutta. Certainly, her work with the poor was nothing less than heroic, and I know that I could never do what she did. But that is not the only reason I admire her. I admire her because of an interview she gave to a reporter once. The reporter, who was a skeptic or perhaps even an unbeliever, asked Mother Theresa what she said to God when she prayed. Mother Theresa said that she did not say anything. She just listened. So the reporter asked her what God said, and Mother Theresa responded that God did not say anything. He just listened. Like a cleverly crafted Zen koan, St. Theresa's response made no sense but was undeniably profound and unavoidably engaging. It showed that prayer is not just words. True prayer is intimacy. It is the experience of being so present to the other and communicating so deeply that words become completely unnecessary. This coming week I am making my annual spiritual retreat at Christ In The Wilderness. It is a hermitage retreat center outside of Stockton, Illinois. I live all alone in a small hermitage tucked away in the woods, and it is an experience in listening. If you have never purposely sought solitude, it might seem a bit strange, but Christ in the Wilderness is not just about being alone. It is about the solitude of intimacy. Without the distractions and demands of people, schedules, and tasks, it is possible to discover a very palpable intimacy with God. So I listen. I hear God whispering in the rustling of millions of leaves as autumn winds sweep over the hills. I hear God singing in the buzzing of insects as the day grows warm. I hear God calling in the distant cry of coyotes in the deep, dark night. Whether or not one spends any time at a hermitage retreat, it is crucial to have time alone with God. Like any relationship, our relationship with God needs work. We have to do the work of communicating, and this is called prayer. Prayer is not only devotional, ritual or liturgical, it is also natural and spontaneous. In our human relationships, we have structured times to communicate, and we have spontaneous times. The same is true of our prayer time with God. In our human relationships, we spend time together doing things or even not doing things. In our relationship with God, we need to do things which make us mindful of God, and we need to cultivate our awareness of being in God's abiding presence even when we are doing nothing. No matter how you might do it, make it your daily practice to spend a little time alone with God. It is as essential to our spiritual health as are breathing and eating to our physical health. When you have that time alone with God, be sure to spend some of it just listening. You may hear God listening back. Fr. Michael

Due to illness, limited mobility, or just a time of need, many of our parishioners are unable to join us to celebrate the Eucharist at Sunday Mass. The Ministers of Care make visits to the homebound and to those who are sick and help them stay connected to our Parish Community. This ministry is one of hospitality and compassion and also is spiritually enriching; people working as Ministers of Care will tell you that they have the experience of receiving much more than what they give. Visits don't require a lot of time; please consider joining this very vital ministry. 4 VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY A Veterans Day program to honor all veterans will be held at Divine Infant Jesus Church on Friday, November 11 at 2:00. The program will include all of the service flags and a musical salute to all the Armed Forces. The award winning Divine Infant Band will also play. The children of the school will be singing the songs, and invite the audience to join them. There is no charge for the Veterans Day program, and it is open to everyone, veterans and patriots alike. So come and lift your spirits with great music and song. Share the time with the young people, our future leaders of America. This week First Grade will be working on Pumpkin Science. First they will make predictions like will it sink or float, how many seeds in it, how much does it weigh. They will name our pumpkin and write stories about it. They will test the predictions made. Last they will cut into the pumpkin and sample pumpkin seeds.

6 INFERTILITY AND WOMEN S HEALTH PROBLEMS Unlike common suppressive or destructive approaches, NaProTECHNOLOGY works cooperatively with the procreative and gynecologic systems. Exploring the Beauty of Catholic Liturgy in the African American Tradition Featuring Dr. Kim Harris St. Martin de Porres will celebrate the Spirituality of the African American Catholic Community on Friday, October 21st and Saturday, October 22nd entitled, "Let the Church Say Amen". Dr. Kim Harris, from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles will lead us on these two days. This event will take place at Saint Martin de Porres Church, 5112 West Washington Blvd. in Chicago. Friday, October 21st at 7:00pm will be an ecumenical event in the spirit of "Songs of Faith, Songs of Freedom, Songs of Worship". This will be part concert, part history of the music that has played a role in the cultural, spiritual and social movement of African Americans. Saturday, October 22nd, from 8:30am to 1:00pm will be a special gathering for those who serve as ministers in the Catholic Church. Ministers of music and choirs, lectors, ushers, greeters, Eucharistic ministers, deacons, priests and anyone who serves the church and liturgy is invited. There will be prayer, a keynote address by Dr. Harris and a set of break out sessions. We encourage everyone to come who has a desire to grow in or learn more about the power of liturgical celebrations brought forth through the gifts of the African American Catholic experience. The registration fee for Saturday is only $25 or if a parish group of 5 or more attend it is just $20 per person. Registration is due by Wednesday, October 19th.

7 THE WOMEN S CENTER October is a month in which we honor our heavenly mother, Mary, in a special way, especially by saying the Rosary. October has also been designated Respect Life Month. Please honor Mary and also help The Women s Center by praying your rosaries for the mothers who come to us for help during their pregnancies. In our over 31 years we have enabled 39,000 mothers to give birth to their babies through our counseling, prayer, and material assistance. We are looking for new Lobby Desk volunteers on Wednesday 1-4pm and Thursdays 1-4pm to greet guests and help with projects. 4) We have a weekday opp to clean, tag, and box bottles for our Spare Change Campaigns (great for friends or service hours!). JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Though Jesus told today's parable more than two thousand years ago, human nature hasn't changed: we recognize both characters instantly. The merciless judge represents the corruption that has short-circuited justice throughout history; the distraught widow, society's perennially powerless, marginalized to what Pope Francis calls the "peripheries" by those who wield power but lack the mercy that could transfigure society with compassion. To confront such reality, Jesus bids us, "pray always without becoming weary" (Luke 18:1). Prayer opens our eyes to see others from Jesus' perspective, and leads us to work for justice by coming to the aid of others with what Pope Francis extols as a higher standard, mercy. Thus, when Jesus asks, "Will not God secure the rights of [God's] chosen ones? Will [God] be slow to answer?" (18:7). We respond by making God's liberating work for others our own. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest.
