2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR It was lunch time over at school and so I stopped in Langan Hall to visit with our students as they eagerly devoured their noon-time nourishment. I asked the kids at one table what they were having for lunch, and they declared with joy, ''Pancakes and sausage!'' So I made a theological observation. I said, ''See how great Catholic schools are? We can do miracles. We have transformed the meal of breakfast into lunch!'' Actually, this is a regular miracle here at Divine Infant Jesus School. The pancakes and sausage lunch are part of the regular menu rotation for the Archdiocesan food service, but this is only the tiniest of miracles that occur at our school. At Divine Infant Jesus School, miracles happen on a daily basis. All I have to do is to look at our students and I am confronted with the miraculous. The first miracle I see is that of the Christian community. Our kids come from all over the area and from many different ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds, but together we form the Church which, as St. Paul tells us, is the Body of Christ made of many different members. Our school kids form a community that is the diverse and beautiful Body of Christ. I also see the miracle of learning. It is wonderful to see little minds absorb knowledge and grow in ability. The human mind is an amazing creation, and it is a privilege to see these young minds in action. From learning comes the miracle of growth. Those years from kindergarten to eighth grade are dog years. Our students make such tremendous strides in just a few short years. They go from being little darlings who can barely tie their shoes to young men and woman ready to move on to high school. Of course, this growth is evidence of the miracle of life. All life comes from God and is meant to grow and thrive, and our school brims with this life. All of this reveals to me the greatest miracle that I see in our school -- the miracle of faith. When I ask people to define faith, most people do not define it but rather describe it by its various qualities. They say that it is hope or belief or trust. Those are aspects of faith, but they are not the definition. Rather, faith is the code word for our relationship with God. We describe all our relationships by code words -- husband, wife, mother, father, son, daughter, friend, boss, etc. We do not have to explain the relationship. We simply use the word and others understand it. The same is true of faith. When I say I have faith, I mean that I have a relationship with God. It is this miraculous relationship that I see in our school. Our students come to know and love God in our school. Within our school community and through all their learning, growing, and living, our students discover their relationship with God. This Sunday begins our annual observance of Catholic Schools Week. It is a week of recognition and celebration for our faculty, staff and students and for the entire parish as well. This week we are all invited to look at the gift of our school and to treasure the miracles it reveals. Catholic school is not cheap. Our school parents pay serious tuition dollars and our parish supports the school significantly, but the miracles that come from our school are priceless. The community, the learning and growing and faith in our school are treasures that last a lifetime. During Catholic Schools Week, we celebrate the treasure of Catholic schools and our own school in particular. It is truly a miracle, even on the days when we do not serve pancakes and sausage for lunch. Fr. 4 Archdiocese of Chicago Statement in Response to the Jeff Anderson Document Release Press Conference January 21, 2014 The documents made public by Jeffrey Anderson relate to 30 Archdiocesan priests accused of abusing minors at various times during the last half century. All of the documents relate to cases that date back many years, in some cases, decades. Ninety-five percent of these cases occurred prior to Today no priest with even one substantiated allegation of sexual abuse of a minor serves in ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago. The Archdiocese acknowledges that its leaders made some decisions decades ago that are now difficult to justify. They made those decisions in accordance with the prevailing knowledge at the time. In the past 40 years, society has evolved in dealing with matters related to abuse. Our understanding of and response to domestic violence, sexual harassment, date rape, and clerical sexual abuse have undergone significant change and so has the Archdiocese of Chicago. While we complied with the reporting laws in place at the time, the Church and its leaders have acknowledged repeatedly that they wished they had done more and done it sooner, but now are working hard to regain trust, to reach out to victims and their families, and to make certain that all children and youth are protected. We realize the information included in these documents is upsetting. It is painful to read. It is not the Church we know or the Church we want to be. The Archdiocese sincerely apologizes for the hurt and suffering of the victims and their families as a result of this abuse. Our hope is through this release of documents and the work we are doing through our Office for the Protection of Children and Youth we can help further promote healing among all those affected by these crimes. The Archdiocese of Chicago is in full compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, adopted by the U.S. Bishops in Dallas in June We refer all reports of sexual abuse immediately to civil authorities. The Archdiocese s independent Review Board examines the findings of all investigations and makes recommendations to the archbishop regarding fitness for ministry and safety of children. The Archdiocese of Chicago is concerned first and foremost with the healing of abuse victims and has maintained a victim assistance ministry for more than 25 years. In addition, the Archdiocesan Office for the Protection of Children and Youth, charged with assisting victims and their families and preventing abuse, has trained and processed background checks on more than 160,000 priests, deacons, religious, lay employees and volunteers; conducted more than 3,000 training sessions; and trained more than 200,000 children to protect themselves from sexual predators. The Archdiocese encourages anyone who has been sexually abused by a priest, deacon, religious or lay employee, to come forward. Complete information about reporting sexual abuse can be found on the Archdiocesan website at protection.shtm. 115 UNITS OF BLOOD DONATED DESPITE THE SNOW Thanks to the generosity of dozens of village and area residents, the Westchester Blood Program collected 115 units of blood for area hospitals at its January 18th drive at Divine Providence School. The drive started early in the morning with several inches of snow on the ground, left by several wintry fronts. Then, with the drive at its halfway point, more precipitation descended, leaving a few more inches. Despite these intimidating conditions, donor after donor marched through the door, rolled up a sleeve and donated a pint. The "Gift of Life" came at a crucial time -- after the holidays -- when most hospitals are short of blood products. The Blood Program extends its appreciation to the many Divine Infant members and friends who stepped up as donors or as volunteer helpers at the drive, the first one on the WBP's 2014 schedule. 5 CONGRATYULATIONS TO OUR PRINCIPAL On January 17, 2014, Nazareth Academy inducted seven new members into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Nazareth welcomed coach Len Gramarossa (Western Springs), friend Sister Pat Borchardt (La Grange Park) and athletes Mary Carol Beach 81 (Gilbert, AZ), Ron Mouw 87 (Hinsdale), Ryan Mouw 92 (Brookfield), Michael Pilch 86 (Lockport), Monica Skowronski 82 (Lowell, IN) and Joe Ziemba 99 (Naperville). The honorees and their guests celebrated before the boys basketball game with a reception at Nazareth. During halftime, each inductee received a commemorative award listing their accomplishments at Nazareth from Nazareth Principal, Deborah Tracy and Nazareth President, Dennis Moran. As we pride ourselves on the development of the whole person, we are happy to recall those women and men who have contributed to the Nazareth Academy Athletic Program throughout our history. Their examples as student-athletes, coaches and fans help to raise the bar of excellence as we look to a strong and vibrant future in Catholic High School education. A CYO basketball game between two neighboring parishes. Parents of the young players scream insults and threats at one another and assert their superiority. A Protestant and a Catholic church sit on adjoining properties. Each is vigilant about having parking violators removed from its own private parking lot. An old pastor retires but continues to reside at the parish. A new pastor arrives and quickly finds his faith community choosing sides against him. Saint Paul addresses similar disagreements in the early church at Corinth. He encourages the church there to make up their differences and to be united again in their belief and practice. Today s first reading from Isaiah speaks of a people weighed down by the yoke of sin and darkness. Certainly the bickering and differences among us can be classified as such. The Gospel tells of the beginning ministry of Jesus. The Light has come, encouraging us to repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
