2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Each February, even when it is not an election year, the office of president of the United States gets a little added attention. Abraham Lincoln's birthday falls on the 12th of the month. We celebrate George Washington's birthday this Monday the 22nd, and last Monday on the 15th all the other presidents had their birthday. However, my favorite president's birthday is the 17th of January. He was a statesman, a scientist, an inventor, a mailman, a musician, and evidently a bit of a playboy as well. Best of all, he is on my favorite note of United States currency. That is right. My favorite president is Benjamin Franklin. Now, even if your knowledge of American history is weak, you may refrain from doing a Google fact check on me. Ben was Postmaster General and ambassador to France, but he was never president of the United States. Still, I do not mind. Benjamin Franklin has my vote because he is on my favorite note of United States currency: the one hundred dollar bill. That is a lot better than ol' $5.01 Abe. Waaaay better than ol' Buck-and-aquarter-George! I mention Abe, George, Ben, and their respective monetary values because of two things. First, I want to express my genuine gratitude to everyone in the parish who made a pledge to the To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign last autumn. Our parish goal was 7,350 little green pictures of Benjamin Franklin -- that equals $735, and not only did we meet that goal, but we went over by a whole bunch of Bens, Abes, and Georges too. As of the most recent report from the campaign office, our pledges were over $861,000. According to the campaign rules, we keep 60% of the $735,000, but we get 100% of every dollar beyond the goal. So you can see how important it is that we make all our pledge payments over the next five years. Secondly, you may have noticed that we have not done the Annual Catholic Appeal in church this month. That is because when parishes do To Teach Who Christ Is, they are exempt from conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in church that year. However, that does not mean that we are exempt from our parish goal for the Appeal. If you have given to the ACA in the past, you probably received a donation request in the mail. Even though you are now making your pledge payments to TTWCI, I ask that you also please make a gift to the ACA. Every penny over our ACA goal of $33,000 comes back to us. And we certainly need every little copper Abraham Lincoln we can get our hands on. The roof of church is in very poor condition, and we will need to replace most if not all of it soon. It really is not such a bad thing considering that the roof is 54 years old, but it will not be a cheap project. We will need all the Bens, Abes, and Georges we can get. Once again, thank you for all your generosity to our parish -- not only financially but also in terms of your time and your talent. For almost 70 years, the parishioners of Divine Infant have been working, struggling, contributing, praying, and growing together as God's holy people the Church. We will continue to do so for many years to come, thanks to all of you... and with a little bit of help from my favorite president. Fr. Michael

3 LENTEN ALMSGIVING HELPING ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The Gospel reading Ash Wednesday concerns itself with what has become a traditional three-part Lenten exercise: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Jesus instructs his followers to turn to God, to turn from self-interest and to deepen their relationship with the Lord in secret. He tells them in effect that a humble and quiet pattern of prayer, self-denial and reaching out to others is transforming and leads to a favorable outcome. What is our plan to turn ever closer to God in this Lenten season? Are we prepared to treat this season as a time to deepen our own relationship with the One who redeemed us? It has been a tradition at Divine Infant Jesus Parish to donate food, paper and cleaning products, and personal products to our St. Vincent de Paul Society to distribute to members of our community in need. Below are specified items to be donated during each week of Lent. These are merely suggestions and any food product, etc., is welcome at any time. Monetary donations are always appreciated as they are used to purchase gift cards and for emergencies. Our faith is reflected most strongly in our actions to help the most vulnerable, especially those who hunger. May God continue to bless your generous hearts. Weekend of February 20-21: Canned meat/fish; crackers, cookies, cookie mixes; toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, soap, shower/bath gel Weekend of February 27-28: Cereal, cereal bars & granola bars, juice; peanut butter, jelly; laundry detergent, bleach, spot treatment, fabric softener Weekend of March 5-6: Pasta, pasta sauce, noodles, rice, instant and/or canned potatoes, cooking oil; all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, soft scrub sponges, dish detergent, dishwasher detergent Weekend of March 12-13: Roll, bread, muffin, cake mixes; frosting, pudding, jello, applesauce; foil, plastic wrap, zip-lock storage bags, sandwich bags, trash bags Weekend of March 19-20: Coffee, tea, drink mixes such as lemonade and hot chocolate; salad dressings, catsup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles The shelves are particularly low on fruit, paper products, and personal hygiene products. PARISH LENTEN MISSION THE BIBLICAL ROOTS OF GOD S MERCY Be sure to mark your calendars and save the dates for our parish lenten mission Sunday and Monday March 13th and 14th, 7:00pm. Scripture scholar and archdiocesan priest Fr. Jim McIlhone will present a mission entitled The Biblical Roots of God's Mercy. The sacrament of Penance will be celebrated on Monday evening of the mission. This mission will be an excellent way to observe Pope Francis' call to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy. McIlhone's work, visit his website LOOKING FORWARD Please consider taking part in the Mandatum (Foot Washing) during the 7:00 pm Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 24th. Every year various members of our Parish have participated in this very symbolic part of the Liturgy and have found it to be very uplifting and humbling. Please call the rectory if interested JOIN US IN PRAYER As Lent begins, we invite you to join us in praying the Rosary and/or the Divine Mercy Chaplet before the 8am Mass Monday through Saturday. We begin the Rosary at about 7:25am and the Divine Mercy Chaplet at about 7:45am in Church. On Sunday, we pray the Rosary after the 9:30am Mass in the Crying Room of the Church. We would love to have you.

4 Payton Cullum, a 4th grader, shared his original story that he wrote to the kindergarten class. We all enjoyed it. On February 2nd, students in Grade 2 celebrated their 100th day of school by making "100 Day Stew"! They stirred all the goodies up real good for a delightful treat.

Current research shows that dance is an effective form of exercise therapy, especially for individuals with neurological disorders. This structured adult dance class using chairs for seated work, a ballet barre for balance, and across the floor work aim to improve balance, coordination, and overall physical and mental health. This class uses dance as therapy for rehabilitation of movement disorders and enhancement of motor learning. Note: Instructor was certified with Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). All participants are encouraged to consult with their physician before beginning this or any exercise program. Wear comfortable clothing. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
