1 THE CROWN

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR This past week we celebrated Catholic Schools Week, and on Wednesday grandparents and parents joined us for our weekly Mass. The following is the homily I preached, and I want to offer it to the entire parish. It was a Sunday afternoon when I was four years old, and we went to visit my grandfather. In the living room on the mantle of the fireplace, grandpa had an icon of the crucifixion of Christ. In the image, the sky was dark and filled with ominous storm clouds. The centurion was sitting on his horse which was rearing up in fear. The holy women were weeping and raising their hands in sorrow. The two thieves hung on the crosses on either side of Jesus. There in the center of the image, Christ hung on his cross dead, his blood running down and dripping onto a skull at the foot of the cross. I had seen this icon before and it fascinated and frightened me, but this day, for the first time, I asked grandpa about it. What was happening? Who were all these people? What did it all mean? Grandpa put his strong, work-worn hands on my arms and held me. He explained everything to me at great length. I could see the feeling in his eyes -- sadness and joy, wonder and fear. Grandpa explained it all to me. I did not understand a single word he said. I never understood anything grandpa said because he only spoke Russian, or at least that is what I thought. Many years later, when I was in my early 20s, I commented to my mom and dad how grandpa only spoke Russian. They looked at me like I was crazy and said that grandpa spoke English. He had a very thick accent, but he spoke English just fine. But I never understood a word he said. It was all Russian to me. I never understood anything grandpa said to me, but on that day, when he was talking about Christ's crucifixion, I understood him completely. I did not understand his words, but I understood his heart, and that made a big enough impact on me to set the course of my life. In that moment, I understood that grandpa had faith, and I wanted to have that faith too. I am going to define faith for you, and I want you to pay attention and remember it. Most people do not have a definition of faith. They describe certain qualities, like it is belief or trust or hope, but that is not a definition. Here is the definition: faith is the word that describes our relationship with God. We have many words for relationships: grandfather, grandmother, grandchild, mother, father, brother, sister. Faith is the word that means that we have a relationship with God. On that Sunday afternoon when I was four, I did not understand a word grandpa said, but I understood clearly and deeply that he had faith. Grandpa had a relationship with God, with Christ. I could see the depth and power of that relationship in his eyes. I could feel the strength of that relationship in his hands. Grandpa had a relationship with God, and he made me want to have one too. He invited me into that relationship, and it changed my life. In the gospel, Jesus goes home, but the people in his own town do not have a relationship with him. It would be easy for them because they know Jesus and his family, but they reject him. They do not have a relationship with him. They do not have faith, and so Jesus cannot change their lives. This week we celebrate Catholic schools and all that they teach our children. We teach our students lots of things like reading, riting, rithmatic and religion. But faith is different. Faith is not a subject to learn. It is a relationship into which we are invited by those who have faith. A person can learn everything there is to know about God and religion, but that does not mean that they have faith. That is why it is so good and important for you grandparents and parents and adults to join us for Mass today. We can teach your child lots of things, and we work very hard to invite them into the relationship of faith. But you are the most important ingredient in that relationship of faith. You have it -- at least I hope and pray that you do -- and you can offer it to your children. You can invite them into that relationship. You need to do that. They need to see it in your eyes and feel it in your hands. They need to know that you know Christ and love him so that they can know Christ and love him too. We have a big job to do here at Divine Infant School, but there is a bigger job to do at home. You have to live the relationship of faith. You have to know Christ and then bring your children to know him too. You do not have to be a great theologian or saint to do this. You just have to have your own relationship with Christ. You just have to have faith. If you do have faith, your kids will see it in your eyes and feel it in your hands. Everything else will just be Russian to them. Fr. Michael

In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our Parish. As we contemplate God s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our Parish, our Archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish. 6 KIDS AND HEARTS During the month of February, we often see numerous articles written on heart disease. 99% of these articles relate to the adult population. There is another population that we tend to forget about and that is kids ages 1 day old to 18 years old. Shortly after birth (and sometimes prior to birth) an infant can be diagnosed with a congenital heart defect (CHD). A CHD refers to structural heart defects that occur while the heart is developing during pregnancy. The cause of many CHD s is unknown. There may initially be no signs or symptoms present after birth, but the infant may start showing signs of fatigue during feedings, difficulty breathing or cyanosis (bluish appearance of the skin) may develop. It is reported that CHD s occur in 1% of all births and at least 25% of children born with a CHD will need surgery to repair the defect. As children get older (toddlers to teens) parents may have a child complain of chest pain. While over 85% of kids complaining of chest pain may be idiopathic (no evidence of any significant disease), and another 10% may be due to musculoskeletal, respiratory, or stomach issues, there is that 5% that may really have a heart issue. What are some causes of chest pain that warrant seeing a pediatric cardiologist? Chest pain with exertion, palpitations or syncopal episodes (passing out) A child who was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease A child complaining of a rapid heart rate at rest Frequent syncopal episodes There are other cardiac diseases which may present with no symptoms. Parents should be pro-active and have their children checked by a pediatric cardiologist if there is a family history of the following: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Long QT Syndrome Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome IHSS (Idiopathic Hypertrophic Sub-Aortic Stenosis) It is imperative to listen to our children. Pay attention. Take a toddler seriously if they begin to complain that their heart is pounding like a drum. Perhaps your teenager isn t passing out to just get attention. With today s Western Medicine, many of these issues can be treated, but they have to be diagnosed first. Lord, the key to our hearts is our children. Bless and protect them always. Blessings, Jeannette Barczak R.N. (Parish Nurse)

Multiple items may be eligible for a pick-up by a volunteer if needed, please call The families who receive these things are grateful for your generosity. THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today's Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It's only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week's readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke.
