2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Someone once said to me, "Fr. Michael, your life must be so interesting!" It's true! In fact, my life is so interesting that I am thinking of writing an autobiographical screen play that I hope will be developed into a movie for the Lifetime television network. It will be entitled, Guns, Drugs, Liquor, and Women: The Father Michael Story -- Starring Danny DeVito as Father Michael, Jon Hamm as Archbishop Cupich, and Whoopi Goldberg as the woman who loved them both! It is a catchy title, the kind that those made-for-tv movies tend to have. But admittedly, guns, drugs, liquor and women would have little to do with the story. My life is not exciting in that way, but that is not to say it is not fulfilling. My life as a priest is very fulfilling. As a priest, it is my place to stand with one foot in the ordinary world and the other in the nonordinary realm of the spirit and to act as a bridge for people. As a priest, it is my job to know and speak to God and to help bring others to a profound experience of the Divine. Now that I say all that, it does sound pretty exciting! This weekend we have the opportunity to see how that excitement grows in a young man studying for the priesthood. This weekend is the annual Seminary Sunday Collection to support the seminaries of the Archdiocese of Chicago. We are fortunate to have seminarian Austin Wilker from Mundelein Seminary preaching at all the masses. I ask you please to be generous in today's second collection for the Archdiocesan seminaries. But we have to do more. You and I have to invite young men to consider the priesthood. Priesthood might not be the stuff of made-for-tv movies, but I can think of no other way (except maybe astronaut) that I would rather spend my life. So talk about priesthood to young men whom you think would make good priests. Tell them how important and valuable the priesthood is. Tell them that other professions might pay more money, but money will not buy fulfillment. Tell them that they can have a truly exciting and meaningful life as a priest. Tell them that you need them to be priests. Tell them God needs them to be priests. Tell them that as priests they will live amazing lives. Tell them not to worry or be afraid. The chances of Whoopi Goldberg falling in love with them are pretty slim. Next Sunday be sure to bring all your furry, feathered, and/or scaled friends to the Rite of Blessing of Pets at 1:00pm in the church courtyard. Fr. Michael Our annual celebration of the Rite of Blessing of Animals will take place on Sunday October at 1pm in the courtyard on the south side of church. Bring your dogs, cats, alligators, bison, guinea pigs, regular pigs, goldfish, tarantulas, hamsters, monkeys and any other non-human creature to receive this special blessing. BAKE SALE The Women s Guild will have their fall bake sale, this weekend, September 26 and September 27th. The sale will be after all masses. Please drop off 1 or 2 dozen of your favorite sweets: Saturday, September 26 after 3pm Sunday, September 27 after 7:30am Enjoy the delicious baked goods! Thank you for you continued support!

3 TO TEACH Who Christ Is A campaign for strong parishes, Catholic education and faith formation in the Archdiocese of Chicago When they call on me, I will answer Psalm 91:15 As Father recently announced, Divine Infant Jesus has begun an important initiative called To Teach Who Christ Is. This campaign will advance not only Catholic education and faith formation programs across Chicago, but also strengthen our own parish resources. Thank you to all of our volunteers who have begun visiting with parish families to explain these needs and invite a prayerfully-considered gift. If you have not received a call from one of our volunteers already, please expect one in the weeks ahead. We ask that you keep an open mind, an open heart, and an open door. Please accept volunteers invitations to briefly visit in a home or at the parish it will be a chance to meet someone new, or reconnect with a neighbor. Our goal in this campaign is two-fold: to meet our financial target so that we can address our needs, and to build an even stronger community of faith with a shared vision for our future. Visiting with fellow parishioners accomplishes both, hand-in-hand. The To Teach Who Christ Is Team thanks you in advance for your hospitality and generosity! Campaign Update We have raised more than $146,000 thanks to the early commitments from 10 of the families! Thank you for your enthusiasm, generosity, and prayers. Our To Teach Who Christ Is Team continues to invite more and more families to participate each week. Please accept their invitation and prayerfully consider how you might help. Your gift will ensure a vibrant future for our parish, and Catholic education across Chicago. Parish Goal: $735,000 Total Pledged: $182,000 Percent of Goal: 25% Number of Pledges: #12 Average Gift: $15,000 For more information about To Teach Who Christ Is, please visit You may also contact the parish office at or the To Teach Who Christ Is office at

4 ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ, September, 2015 This weekend we celebrate the men studying for service as priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago. On this occasion, we honor the ministry of the many priests who serve you faithfully each day as well as those who are preparing to serve you with charity in the future. Thank you for your generous support of these men. Our seminarians are matching your sacrifice by preparing for a life of service. They are willing to give up having their own families in order to make you and the rest of the Catholic community their family. Today, we are blessed with 78 men in formation for priesthood and another 60 high school aged young men in our pre-seminary Quigley Scholars discernment program. These 138 men are the future priests in our parishes. Perhaps you know some of these men, and like me come away inspired by their love for the Church and the generous enthusiasm that motivates them to answer the call to serve as pastors of our people. We love our seminarians for good reason: they call out the best in us. They need and deserve our prayers and financial support as they consider forsaking all for the Kingdom of God and the service of God s people. It is because of this commitment that I ask for your help by contributing generously to the seminarian education fund special collection this weekend. Regardless of the size of your gift, I can assure you that these young men will not be outdone in generosity. All funds collected will be used solely for the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Should you find it more convenient, feel free to make your gift online through our website at Thank you in advance for your commitment. This year as I mark my 40th anniversary of ordination as a priest, I pledge to you my daily prayers for you and your family. I ask for yours in return. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago JOIN ONE OF OUR MUSIC GROUPS The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Advent/ Christmas season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our organizational rehearsal on Wednesday, October 14, from 7:15 pm until 8:30 pm in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that rehearsal. The DI Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come to us with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the instrument. This group has already started their season but Mrs. Schindler, our organist, is always happy to meet new young people interested in joining this group. The Strings of Faith are already in session for the season. They are currently working on their full season schedule. We welcome back our Hand Chimes Ensemble who are already rehearsing and planning for the season. You will see a few new young members who have joined this year. Our DI Children s Choir (grades 2-5) has already begun their season but will have open enrollment again in October. Newcomers may join in at the October 18th rehearsal. The children rehearse on Sunday mornings from 8:30 am 9:20 am in the music room of the school and sing once a month at Sunday mass. For more information, please Mrs. Anne Nelson at annenelson29@gmail.com The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. We will be featuring them this year in our Cantor Corner on the Music tab of the DI Website. The DI Resurrection Choir sings year round at funerals. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice and availability for funerals Monday through Saturday usually at 10 am when there is a funeral. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Judy Schindler, our organist, who coordinates this ministry. For further information about any of our music groups, please contact Janet Reif at or jreif@me.com

Please contact Sue at or at info@stdomitillaalumni.com to reserve your spot. OUR PRODIGAL GOD We keep having to relearn how prodigal God is. It is as if God cannot quite manage to say no. We think it is surely fine when God is prodigal with us rich in mercy and forgiveness, generous in grace. But what about the other the enemy, the sinner, the heretic, the outsider? Well, we expect God to be as stingy with that person as we are. Moses and Joshua wanted such a cozy world, too. They wondered how the spirit of God could be given to the two who did not show up at the meeting tent today s church. And the apostles in the Gospel complained because there were some miracle workers who were clearly not followers of Jesus. God s great free wheeling generosity confounded them all. Let this be, says Jesus. Just see to it that you who lead continue to be worthy of your calling. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
