A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Holy Week Spirituality We begin the holiest week of the year.

The everyday disappointments of life, be they personal, or what we hear on the news. We also have opportunities to experience resurrection.

Today is called Passion Sunday, or sometimes Palm Sunday, because of the Opening Rite of Mass including a palm procession, recalling the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Holy Week Spirituality We begin the holiest week of the year. The liturgy gives us a special opportunity to deepen our spiritual awareness and to enter into the mystery of dying and rising with Jesus. We all have many spiritual deaths. The everyday disappointments of life, be they personal, or what we hear on the news. We also have opportunities to experience resurrection. Recovering from an illness, healing a broken relationship, or finding a new job are just some examples. This week we need to name our dying and our rising and make it one with that of Jesus. Today is called Passion Sunday, or sometimes Palm Sunday, because of the Opening Rite of Mass including a palm procession, recalling the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The Gospel this Sunday is the Passion according to Matthew. As we recall the arrest and trial of Jesus, his suffering and cross, and finally his death on the cross, we all have the opportunity to identify our suffering with his. Lent ends Thursday afternoon and we enter into the Sacred Triduum, or Three Days, with the Holy Thursday Mass celebrating the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. In the Gospel, we hear of Jesus washing feet and enact that ritual. Because both Father Tom and I would find it very difficult to get up and down at our age to wash feet, Father Henry Kricek from neighboring St. Louise de Marillac will help us with Mass this Thursday. You will have the opportunity to wash hands to symbolize your willingness to carry out the mandate of Jesus to show our love for one another. Our liturgy concludes with the Eucharistic procession to the place of reposition. Eucharist adoration will continue until 11:00P.M. On Good Friday, we remember the passion and death of Jesus. We hear John s Passion which is unique, because it is as if Jesus is orchestrating all that happens to him. We celebrate his passion as a victory. We then have solemn intercessions and an opportunity to venerate the cross. While Eucharist cannot be offered this day, we do receive communion from hosts that were consecrated the night before. Dr. Dado has written in an in-depth analysis of the Easter Vigil, the highlight of Holy Week. Please read what she has written. This is the mother of all vigils and the high point of our year liturgically and spiritually. The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night is the pinnacle of the liturgical year and is a glorious celebration of the Resurrection of Christ, our Lord.

Each part brings us through the Paschal Mystery to the light of eternal life, through the signs, symbols and prayers of the liturgy.

The new fire is blessed, the Paschal Candle, symbol of Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, is prepared.

We praise God our Father, proclaiming that this is the night when Christ broke the prison of death and rose victorious.

We begin with the Genesis accounts of Creation and of Abraham being put to the test.

We jubilantly sing the Glory to God, and then St. Paul reminds us in Romans that we are buried with Christ in baptism so that, we too might live in newness of life.

The liturgy proceeds with the Blessing of Water, Baptism of the elect and the Renewal of Baptismal Promises for all the faithful as they receive the Sprinkling with Baptismal Water.

3 THE EASTER VIGIL IN THE HOLY NIGHT May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds The three days of the Sacred Paschal Triduum, Holy Thursday of the Lord s Supper, Friday of the Passion of the Lord, and Holy Saturday are continuous celebrations of the Passion and Resurrection of our Lord. The Church solemnly celebrates Christ crucified, buried and risen. The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night is the pinnacle of the liturgical year and is a glorious celebration of the Resurrection of Christ, our Lord. The Easter Vigil has four parts: the Lucenarium, the Liturgy of the Word, the Baptismal Liturgy and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Each part brings us through the Paschal Mystery to the light of eternal life, through the signs, symbols and prayers of the liturgy. The Mass begins with the Lucenarium, from the Latin, lucerna for lamp, bringing light in the darkness. The new fire is blessed, the Paschal Candle, symbol of Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, is prepared. The Candle is lit from the fire and is processed into the church as The Light of Christ who gives light to all the faithful. Then the Exsultet, Easter Proclamation, is chanted. We praise God our Father, proclaiming that this is the night when Christ broke the prison of death and rose victorious. The Liturgy of the Word recalls salvation history from the Jewish covenant, leading up to Christ, the New and Eternal Covenant. We begin with the Genesis accounts of Creation and of Abraham being put to the test. The Exodus reading follows, telling of the triumph of the Lord over the Egyptians, and then the prophet Isaiah invites all who are thirsty to come to the water! We jubilantly sing the Glory to God, and then St. Paul reminds us in Romans that we are buried with Christ in baptism so that, we too might live in newness of life. The Gospel proclaims Christ raised from the dead; the tomb is indeed empty! The liturgy proceeds with the Blessing of Water, Baptism of the elect and the Renewal of Baptismal Promises for all the faithful as they receive the Sprinkling with Baptismal Water. The Rite of Confirmation follows for the elect and for candidates completing the Sacraments of Initiation or those who are coming into the full communion of the Catholic Church. We pray through our new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, that God keep us by his grace in Christ Jesus, our Lord, for eternal life. The Liturgy of the Eucharist follows, with the preface that it is our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you, O Lord, but on this night, above all to laud you yet more gloriously. We are indeed, celebrating the most sacred night of the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, in the flesh. We sing the Lord s Prayer together with one heart and voice, exchange the Sign of Peace, ask the Lord to enter into our very being, and proceed to receive the Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The Mass concludes with the Solemn Blessing, as we pray, Now that the days of the Lord s Passion have drawn to a close, may you who celebrate the gladness of the Paschal Feast come with Christ s help, and exulting in spirit, to those feasts that are celebrated in eternal joy. JOIN THE MINISTRY OF CONSOLATION Each of us has experienced the loss of a loved one and understands how difficult that journey can be. We all need time to heal and to become whole once again. When a member of Christ s family dies, the Church intercedes, because we believe that death is not the end and our bond with our loved one is not broken. A little help in the form of a letter, article or telephone call can bring great comfort to someone and assure them they are not alone. The Ministry of Consolation is designed to walk along with people who are mourning the death of a loved one. Being a minister to the bereaved is very rewarding and can really help grieving members of our Divine Infant family. There is not a lot of work involved, and you can do this in the comfort of your own home. At The Women s Center our counselors help them with friendship, counseling, and material assistance. We have saved over 39,000 women and their babies from the horrible consequences of abortion. SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul's letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us "behold the Lamb of God" before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we--his Body through baptism, the church--now bear his face. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory ( ) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
