2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR This autumn, the Archdiocese will begin Renew My Church, a program designed to reinvigorate and revitalize the parishes of the Archdiocese. Today we have the penultimate article by Rev. Louis J. Cameli designed to help us develop a theological understanding of what Renew My Church is striving to accomplish. We Belong to Christ in the Church: A Practical Ecclesiology for Renew My Church Father Louis J. Cameli Part 6 God s essential gifts which give the Church its form and identity A foundational gift or grace which God gives to the Church is communion or a deep unity in community. This flows from the pattern of God s merciful plan for us: It has pleased God to make men [and women] holy and save them not merely as individuals without any mutual bonds, but by making them into a single people (Lumen gentium, 9) And the night before he died, the Lord Jesus prayed for the unity of the Church: that they may all be one as you, Father, are in me and I am in you (John 17:21). A second essential gift and identifying marker of the Church is the Word of life entrusted to the Church. The Church holds the Word and shares the Word. And intimately connected to the Word are the sacraments, which celebrate and make present the saving mysteries of Jesus Christ. When the Church celebrates the sacraments, it makes the saving mysteries of Jesus Christ available and accessible across time and space. Through the sacraments we are drawn into union with Jesus Christ who is our life. Another holy gift of the Church is mission. The Lord sends his Church into the world, as he says, Go and proclaim the Good News. That mission is both a gift and responsibility for the Church and all who belong to the community faith. Mission means being in the world and for the world in the name of Jesus. Mission leads to new life in the Church through the initiation of new believers. Mission also means working for justice, peace, and a profound respect for all life, which are constitutive elements of proclaiming the Gospel. Among the apostles, Jesus singled out Peter to serve his Church in a particular way. Peter was to be a rock, a foundation and firm reference point for true faith. He was to feed the sheep, that is, nurture and keep the flock together. He was to confirm or strengthen his brothers and sisters on their journey to God. This ministry of Peter continues as a gift in the Church through the ministry of the Pope, who is our holy father insuring fidelity, unity, and hope for those who believe. The Pope together with the bishops serves the Church in response to Jesus prayer the night before he died: that they may all be one. (John 17:21) Question: Of these gifts in the Church community, word, sacrament, mission, and Peter s ministry which ones have touched my life and inspired me in a special way? How have I or can I carry these gifts forward? SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Monday the 15th of August is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, when a holy day of obligation, excluding the Immaculate Conception and Christmas, falls on a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation is dispensed. Thus, there is no obligation to attend Mass for the Assumption this year, but all are encouraged to do so. Mass will be at 8:00am.

3 CALLING FOR: RELIGIOUS EDUCATION VOLUNTEERS Though this is only August, thoughts in the Religious Education Office are spinning around our theme for the year (PRAYER) and the need for a few more VOLUNTEERS to catechize or aide. We have a majority of veteran volunteers on our staff. They have been with us either since their children have entered the program or since they felt THE CALL in the heart to share faith with others. Training, materials and support are our promise to you. There are usually (75 minute) sessions from September to May. Take some quiet time during August to consider the answer you d give to this call. Classes begin Monday, September 19. If interested or for more information, contact SISTER SUSAN at EARLY BULLETIN DATE The following are dates for bulletin articles Dear Parishioners, Sunday, August 28th before Friday, August 19th CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST 2016 Once again, I will have a Christmas Sale in the Summer. The sale is scheduled for August 6th and 7th after the 5:00, 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30, Masses. There are 50 boxes of the most beautiful Christmas Cards ever. I'm sure you'll want to put one away for the holidays. The cost of each box is $5.00 regardless of the size or amount of cards inside. I will also have a few Christmas items from last year and a few Holy Communion ties, as well. Cash or checks are accepted. 4 NEW STAFF MEMBERS We welcome Mrs. Tracey Pavel and Mrs. Jennifer Lemke to our school staff. Mrs. Pavel is an experienced teacher having taught for six years prior to joining our faculty. She will be the fifth grade homeroom teacher and will teach Math to the third, fourth and fifth graders. Mrs. Lemke joins our staff as the receptionist and secretary. Mrs. Lemke has over twelve years experience working with various medical practices and more recently with our food service. SCHOOL ENROLLMENT Classes begin on Monday, August 22nd. We still have 35 families (46 students) from last year who have not yet enrolled for the new school year. To complete the enrollment process, families must return their signed Tuition Agreement, $ registration fee, their signed SMART Tuition Form, and must complete the online registration form that appears on our website and was ed to current families previously. WATER TESTING The school had the drinking water tested by the village in June and by the Archdiocese last week. All tests indicate that our water is OK.

5 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday's "Parable of the rich fool" delivered a compelling reason to do the right thing--now: "You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you" (Luke 12:20). Today, Jesus warns us: "You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come" (12:40). Though we do not know when our Master will come, we do know what our Master expects to find. Jesus expects us to be vigilant (12:37) and diligent (12:42) in our work for the kingdom, but also filled with reverent mercy toward our fellow servants and ourselves. Hopefully, Jesus' warning not to get drunk and beat each other up (12:45) does not apply to us literally! But what changes do I need to make, right now, so that the many people outside "the Master's house" will want to come inside to experience the healing comfort of Jesus' own mercy in the compassion of Jesus' mod ern-day disciples? --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. 6 BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF GOD Icon for the Modern Woman The Blessed Virgin Mary is specially honored, or granted hyperdulia, from the Greek, meaning more than just veneration by the Church because of her unique role as the Mother of God, and the Mother of the Church. At the Council of Ephesus in 431, she was given the title Theotokos, God-bearer, declaring Mary as truly the mother of God and the mother of the human Jesus. She is the mother of the members of the Mystical Body of Christ; bringing forth the birth of believers in the Church. While from the beginning she was specially chosen by God in His divine plan, Mary was also quite a real woman of her time, and remains a model for women of the modern era. In Scripture we read that Mary is present at key moments in salvation history. Through her eyes we see the promise of God s plan for His children as it is revealed in His Son. As a first century Jewish young woman, the events of her life must have seemed controversial to those around her, but Mary never cowered away; she faced difficulties head on with infinite faith. Her life was fraught with difficulties, yet her inner strength was unwavering. In a modern spin, the story begins with Joachim and Anne having the longed for child, who later marries under less than ideal circumstances. Shortly after her son is born, Mary must flee to Egypt with her husband and baby as a refugee, then return to her homeland. Later, she and her husband lose their young son while returning from the Passover celebration in Jerusalem only to find him teaching in the Temple. When he comes of age, her son is both loved and hated; the topic of intense debate. She becomes a young widow, and then must witness the suffering and death of her only child. It would appear on a human level to be a very sad story indeed. However, the mystery of God s plan unfolds in how Mary reflects and responds, teaching us the way to perfection. Mary was really never passive; truly she was the proactive handmaid of the Lord, fully participating all the time. Though troubled at the greeting and message of the angel Gabriel, Mary agrees to accept God s plan for her. The shepherd s visit brought the angel s message of the glorious birth of the Messiah. When the baby Jesus was presented in the Temple to Simeon, Mary was told of Jesus destiny as a sign that will be contradicted. While Mary kept all these things, reflecting them in her heart, she remained integrally involved, trusting in the will of God. Her fidelity is clear at the Wedding at Cana, directing the servers to, do whatever he tells you. She was with Jesus through His Passion and Death, and was with the apostles in the Upper Room, a witness in the First Community in Jerusalem. Rather than retreat from what was frightening and perplexing, Mary consciously chose to yield to the will of God, a sign of great fortitude. Mary was far from being a timidly submissive woman; on the contrary, she was a woman who did not hesitate to proclaim that God vindicates the humble and oppressed. For the modern woman, no matter what her vocation may be, Mary is a model of enduring faith, a woman of action in community whose maternal role became universal. She is the icon of the perfect disciple; in her we find the guarantee of God s plan in Christ for the salvation of all, already achieved in her Assumption. The Assumption of Mary is a testimony of and pledge for our future participation in the victory of the Risen Christ; the consoling assurance of our hope in the Resurrection and our own divine destiny. This hope of the promise fulfilled is reflected in the prayers of the liturgy of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Collect we pray that, always attentive to the things that are above, we may merit to be sharers of her glory. The Prayer over the Offerings asks may our hearts, aflame with the fire of love, constantly long for you. The Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed into heaven as the beginning and image of your Church s coming to perfection and a sign of sure hope and comfort to your pilgrim people. When we celebrate this Solemnity, we ask for Mary s intercession so that just as she was assumed into heaven, we may be brought to the glory of the resurrection. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
