2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Today begins the busiest and best week of the year for me. It is Holy Week, and what I like best about Holy Week is that it is so different from the other weeks of the year. The work, the rhythm, and the feel of the week are completely different, and I welcome this week where I can live a different reality: the reality of the paschal mystery. The center of Holy Week and the jewel of the liturgical year is the Paschal Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. The Paschal Triduum is really one liturgy celebrated over three days. The first day is the day of sacrifice, and it begins with the Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday. At this Mass, we contemplate Christ s sacrifice as he humbly washes the feet of his disciples and feeds them with his own flesh and blood. This day of Christ s sacrifice stretches through Good Friday as we celebrate the Liturgy of the Lord s Passion in the afternoon. Then as the sun sets on Good Friday evening, Christ is laid in the tomb and the second day of the Paschal Triduum begins the Great Sabbath. This is my favorite day of the entire liturgical year. It is a day of nothingness. Christ sleeps in the tomb, and all creation waits at the tomb meditating on Christ s suffering and death. Then after the sun has set on the Great Sabbath, we begin the third day, the day of resurrection, by lighting and blessing the paschal fire. From this holy fire we light the Paschal Candle, the light of Christ in our midst, a pillar of fire that destroys the darkness of sin and death. The light of this holy fire spreads through the church as we keep vigil. Then as the Gospel is proclaimed, the Church rejoices at the wonder of Christ s resurrection. I urge you and invite you to make this the busiest and best week of your year. This is the week when we, the Church, the Body of Christ identify ourselves in the mystical supper of divine flesh and blood. This is the week when we embrace the tree that is the intersection between heaven and earth and the bridge over which we pass from life to death and to life again. This is the week when we rest in the nothingness of creation s last day. And after the sun sets on this last day, we see in the darkness that God again commands that there be light and life. This is the week when we see Christ risen in us the ones who were buried in the tomb of the baptismal font and born again from the womb of the font as new christs. In the entire liturgical year, there is nothing better that we do and nothing that is more important. This is the only week that counts. This is the week of creation, life, death, and resurrection. This week the Church lives these mysteries, drinks them in, and experiences them in their fullness. There is no better place to be than in church for the liturgies of the Paschal Triduum. Be here this week. Experience this awesome event. Make this week the busiest and best week of your year. Fr. 3 SCHOOL NEWS Fifth grade students Grace Patten, Lauren Nortier, Erin Lorenzen and Sarah Shuflit are diligently reading their library books in preparation for their monthly book reports. This month s genre is a mystery story. They will do a case study naming the suspects (main characters), crime committed (problems) and case solved (solution) Grade three is studying Changes in Matter in Science. They made green pudding on St. Patrick s Day while discussing how liquids turn to solids. First graders listened closely to Fr. Michael s homily on March 11th. Fr. Michael told the children that Jesus is the REAL superhero. The students reflected on what he said and wrote down their thoughts. Alexa Zornoza said, Jesus is the REAL superhero because he loves us. He makes miracles to help everyone. He made animals. He made food for us. He gave His life for us. He is a miracle! JeanBaptiste Medjo MeZengue said, Jesus is the REAL superhero because He gives us life. He gives us our family and our friends. He loves us. He gives us faith and joy. He does miracles for us. He gives us the world. The first graders wanted to share Fr. Michael s thoughts with everyone so they wrote them with sidewalk chalk nice and big for everyone to see on the Hull Street playground.

As he was now drawing near, at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" (Luke 19:36-38, RSV) Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion (the full name), the first Sunday of Holy Week within the Lenten Season, commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem preceding his passion. As he entered, the people of Jerusalem recognized Jesus as their king, saying "Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" Traditionally in the Western Church the Palm Sunday service begins with the "blessing of the palms," where the palms used in the procession that follows are blessed. It is during this time that the story of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem is read. Then a procession into the church building follows. If there cannot be a procession from the outside of the church, a solemn entrance, taking place entirely within the church, may be done. The hymns and psalmody are related to Christ's office as King. Traditionally the Gloria Laus (i.e., All Glory and Honor), written by Theodulf of Orleans, is sung. Many times the worship service contains a "preaching of the passion," where different events in the last days of Christ are read publicly within the Eucharistic service. In modern Catholic services, the priest and/or a combination of readers read aloud Matthew 26:14-27:66 (Year A), Mark 14:1 15:47 (Year B), or Luke 22:14-23:56 (Year C). Palm Sunday is also called Fig Sunday, because figs were traditionally eaten that day, memorializing the fig tree cursed by Christ after his entry into Jerusalem. In England Palm Sunday was called Olive or Branch Sunday, Sallow or Willow, Yew or Blossom Sunday, or Sunday of the Willow Boughs, named for the local replacements for the traditional palm branches. Various customs have developed to celebrate Palm Sunday. In the Slavic countries, the faithful walked through their buildings and fields with the blessed palms, praying and singing ancient hymns. They then laid palm pieces on each plot of ground, in every barn, building, and stable, as a petition was made for protection from weather and disease, and for a blessing upon the produce and property.
