2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR If I were a betting man, I would bet a whole dollar that every Catholic and probably most non-catholics know that the 17th of March is St. Patrick's day. There are certain days during the liturgical year that are very well known. Certainly, Christmas and St. Patrick's day rank among the most familiar. There are other days that are pretty familiar to people such as St. Joseph's day on the 19th of March and All Saints day on the first of November. But there are other days in the liturgical year that most Catholics would be hard-pressed to identify. For example, not too many Catholics know off the top of their heads when the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist is, and I would bet you another dollar that hardly anybody could even guess the memorial of St. Sharbel Makhluf -- if'n they even know that there is a St. Sharbel Makhluf. But just in case you are ever on Jeopardy and the question (or I should say the answer) comes up, the proper response is What is the 24th of June and the 24th of July? Still another dollar says that very few Catholics are aware that the 22nd of January is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. This is an obligatory memorial in the United States. When the 22nd of January is a Sunday, as is the case this year, the day is transferred to Monday the 23rd. So tomorrow we, as the Catholic Church in the United States of America, acknowledge and do penance for the fact that our nation aborts hundreds of thousands of babies each year. Since the United States Supreme Court made abortion legal, around 58 million babies have been aborted. Abortion is a complex social, political, and legal issue. Both those who support abortion and those who oppose it are often passionate in their opinions and reasons for their positions. But as a human issue it is really very simple. It is a death. Somebody dies. Of course, everybody dies, and people die for different reasons and in different circumstances. No human being can escape death, but there is something particularly tragic about abortion. I am using tragic in the classic, Greek sense, not the popular sense. The popular sense of tragedy is that it is something terribly unfortunate, usually accidental, and meaningless. The classic sense of tragedy from the Greeks is actually the opposite. Though it involves death or great loss, tragedy is, in fact, very meaningful. In ancient Greek tragedies, the protagonist suffers and dies as a result of his or her own choices. The protagonist's hubris -- pride -- leads to hamartia -- failure or sin. It results in the protagonist's death, but it is a meaningful death. It defines the protagonist forever. The tragedy of abortion is not simply that so many babies have died. It is that we, as a nation, because of our own pride and failure, have chosen to allow and accept this. This is, tragically, what it means to be an American in this era. We are a nation that has chosen to kill its innocent, vulnerable, unborn children. The tragedy of abortion is not the deaths of millions of children. It is the pride and sin of the nation that not only allows this to happen but that considers it a matter of civil rights and justice. The babies are not the tragic figures here. We are. I do not mean any of this to be a condemnation of women who have had abortions. The Church has nothing but compassion and mercy for them. They made a difficult and painful choice with which they will have to live for the rest of their lives. The Church wants them to know God's mercy, forgiveness, healing, and love. But all of us in American share this tragic fate. Our hubris as a nation is that we think we know more about life than God who creates it. Our hamartia as a nation is that we have given the legal right to a mother to decide if the life in her womb is a child who may live or an inconvenience that must die. Please take a little time tomorrow to pray that our nation may find a way to love, nurture, and support all life, especially the life that is in the womb. My fear is that the greatest tragedy may be that our nation and generation goes down in history as being the most inhuman ever. I might even be willing to bet on that. Fr. Michael

ORDINARY TIME: A TIME FOR GROWTH Ordinary Time begins after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this time though we do not celebrate a particular liturgical season such as Advent or Christmas, we celebrate the mystery of Christ present in our every day lives. Just as we return to our regular daily routine, the Church returns to tempus ordinarium or measured time. Liturgically, Ordinary Time celebrates the Pascal Mystery in our earthly lives and so the vestments are green, the color of new growth. The focus is on Sunday as the First Day, the Day of the Lord, the day of the Resurrection. Each Sunday, then is a weekly Easter. At Mass we grow in our faith as we gather to listen to the Word and celebrate the Eucharist. We the Church are united with Christ the Head through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise of eternal life through the final coming of Christ in glory makes each Sunday a true feast. There is nothing ordinary about it. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L.

4 Divine Infant Athletic Board Annual First Grade is working on a unit called Animals in Winter. There was a discussion of what forest animals do in the winter: adapt, migrate, or hibernate. Then the students were given the footprint of a forest animal, and they had to follow the tracks in the room to find that animal. Later they wrote about what they found. 10 AIDAN WALTON EAGLE SCOUT On June 27, 2014, Aidan Walton earned his Eagle Scout award, the highest award possible in Boy Scouting. This achievement was formally celebrated on January 14th, 2017 at an Eagle Court of Honor held at Divine Infant Church. Aidan is the son of Leah Walton and the late Trevor Walton, also an Eagle Scout. During the ceremony, Aidan rededicated himself to the ideals of scouting through a candle lighting ceremony of the Scout Law. In a touching moment, Aidan was pinned with his late father s Eagle Scout medal. Aidan earned 29 merit badges, held several leadership positions, and is a member of Scouting s national honor society, the Order of the Arrow. For his Eagle project, Aidan coordinated the purchase and delivery of handmade Easter baskets for children serviced by Divine Infant s St. Vincent DePaul Society. Easter 2017 will mark the 5th consecutive year of this project s continuation. Aidan is the first Eagle Scout from Troop 1, chartered by American Legion Col. A.L. Brodie Post Aidan and Leah would like to thank Father Michael, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Genny Panek and Julie Klemp for all of their support and assistance. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest.
