2 LITURGICAL MOVEMENT Do you ever think of coming to church as coming to a series of movements? Probably you think of sitting still in a pew. That is not our tradition. Last week I wrote about silence as being part of the liturgy. You may have been surprised to hear there are seven times during Mass that call for silence. This week I want to write about movement. If you go to Europe you may notice there are no pews, but only open spaces in churches like St. Peter in Rome. People came to church to move, not to sit. The only person to sit was the bishop. Sitting was a sign of presiding. The word chairman refers to the leader of a meeting. The leader was the only one with a chair, hence chairman. The very word cathedral refers to the cathedra or bishop s chair. Pews were a Protestant invention because they deemphasized ritual, and stressed the reading and preaching of Scripture. They were only interested in listening and not moving. In classical times people were more on the move during liturgy. A remnant of this found in today s official rite of Baptism. There are four different stations with three movements or processions as the assembly moves from place to place. This first station is at the Entrance of the church where parents and godparents stand in the doorway of the church with their child. The rest of the assembly gathers near the doorway. The church building symbolizes the Family of God, just as your home symbolizes your family. The parents want their child to be accepted into God s family, and the assembly all welcomes the child. After the rite of welcoming, there is a procession to the second station near the ambo where God s Word is proclaimed in the Scripture reading. After the Liturgy of the Word there is another movement or procession to the third station, the baptismal font. There water is blessed, baptism promises are made, and the baptismal candidates are immersed into the living waters of Baptism. After the newly baptized are anointed with Sacred Chrism, given a new robe to wear, and receive their baptismal candle. Then there is another procession to the altar, the fourth station. The assembly gathers around the altar for the Lord s Prayer and final blessings. You cannot be a sitter at baptism. You have to move or process from place to place. At Sunday Mass, this movement is not so pronounced. But there are four processions. Unfortunately, not everyone is involved in all of them. We begin Mass with an Entrance procession as the liturgical ministers move from outside the church to the sanctuary. Next is a Gospel procession, all to often abbreviated, in which the Gospel proclaimer carries the Book of Gospels with lighted candles to the ambo. Then there is an Offertory procession. On Thanksgiving, many churches invite the entire assembly to bring up food for the poor. Then there is the Communion Procession as people come forward to the altar to receive the Eucharist. Dismissals are also a very important part of liturgical movement. The very word Mass comes from the Latin missa meaning dismissal. This is also the origin of the word mission. When we are dismissed, we are sent on a mission. If we have a Liturgy of the Word for children, they are dismissed after the opening rites, and process with the Book of Scripture. When there are adult catechumens, they are dismissed after the homily, as they are not ready to be allowed to be present for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. At the end of Mass, we dismiss our ministers of care to bring Communion to the homebound. Finally, we are all dismissed to love and serve the Lord. We are a people on the go, processing to the Kingdom of God. Our movement and processions symbolize our marching into the Kingdom. Father Mike Ahlstrom Administrator, Divine Infant Jesus

3 FRUIT OF THE WORD The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today's readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God's word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two Englishspeaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word "Eucharist" comes from the Greek for "thanksgiving." For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
