2 THE REFORMATION 500 YEARS LATER On October 31 st, 500 years ago last week, a young Augustinian priest, named Martin Luther, tacked his 95 theses on the door of All Saints church in Wittenberg. This is considered the start of the Protestant Reformation. Luther was not interested in starting a new religion, but rather cleaning up the wide spread corruption in the Catholic Church. In time our Catholic Church did have its on reformation to clean up what was clearly wrong with our Church. Unfortunately, we wound up with the Christian Church being split asunder. Before Luther the only split in Christianity was great schism in 1054 when the Orthodox Church rejected the authority of the pope. If you attended the liturgy in an Eastern Rite Catholic church and an Orthodox church, you would be hard pressed to see any difference. Since the reformation we now have some 39,000 Christian denominations, up from 500 in This is a scandal that needs to overcome. One of the great differences is the notion of justification. Luther saw people as attempting to buy their salvation by their good works. He taught we are justified or saved by having faith in Jesus. Since the polemics of the 16 th century, we have come a long way. In 1999 Lutherans and Catholics signed a Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. This past July the World Communion of Reformed Churches signed on with this document. Ecumenism is the effort to reunite Christian Churches. At the Last Super Jesus prayed that all may be one. (John 17:21). We need to work hard to reunite. In the United States Catholics are still the largest denomination, with about 25% of the population stating they are Catholic. What is sad is that the next highest group are former Catholics those who have left the Church. Many are now reporting none when asked their religious affiliation. This is especially true among the millennials or younger Catholics. Even among those who say they are Catholic some 75% are missing from Mass on Sunday! It is estimated that 80% of the young teens we confirm will leave the Church within 10 years! This crisis of faith is why Cardinal Cupich, as our archbishop, has started Renew My Church. He wants us to reawaken a sense of discipleship. He wants us to build strong communities of faith and inspire people, especially the young, to do great things for God. Before we can succeed in reuniting Christians, we need to be strong in our own faith. Our challenge as individuals is to make sure we are strong disciples of Jesus. This means talking with him every day. I need to listen to him by reading Scripture. I need to converse with him as to what he is trying to tell me. Then I must spend some quiet time just sitting with the Lord. Besides having a strong personal relationship with Jesus, I need a strong connection to the Church. Many want Jesus or spirituality without the Church. Jesus is connected to Church. It is impossible to have one without the other. To reject his Church is to reject Jesus! Finally, we need to inspire others to faith by the way we live and treat one another. 500 years after the Reformation some good has happened. But we are splintered apart. We need to get back together and be a strong Church for our future generations. May God help us! Father Mike Ahlstrom Administrator, Divine Infant Jesus Parish

4 Mrs. Day's first grade class is working on Pumpkin Science this week. This unit incorporates Science, Math, and Language. We weighed it, measured it, and then cut it open. After the messy job of taking out the seeds, we counted the seeds in groups of ten. We wrote stories about the pumpkin. But it seemed the students enjoyed eating the pumpkin seeds the most.
