THE CROWN
PASTOR S COLUMN 2 Dear Parishioners, Have you made any New Year s resolutions? If not, there's still time, and Pope Francis has some ideas for you. These are the TEN THINGS that Pope Francis recommends to do: 1. Take care of your spiritual life, your relationship with God, because this is the backbone of everything we do and everything we are. 2. Take care of your family life, giving your children and loved ones not just money, but most of all your time, attention and love. 3. Take care of your relationships with others, transforming your faith into life and your words into good works, especially on behalf of the needy. 4. Be careful how you speak, purify your tongue of offensive words, vulgarity and worldly decadence. 5. Heal wounds of the heart with the oil of forgiveness, forgiving those who have hurt us and medicating the wounds we have caused others. 6. Look after your work, doing it with enthusiasm, humility, competence, passion and with a spirit that knows how to thank the Lord. 7. Be careful of envy, lust, hatred and negative feelings that devour our interior peace and transform us into destroyed and destructive people. 8. Watch out for anger that can lead to vengeance; for laziness that leads to existential euthanasia; for pointing the finger at others, which leads to pride; and for complaining continually, which leads to desperation. 9. Take care of brothers and sisters who are weaker the elderly, the sick, the hungry, the homeless and strangers, because we will be judged on this. 10. Making sure your Christmas is about Jesus and not about shopping. Have a blessed Sunday and good week, Fr. Marcin Szczypula
PARISH INFORMATION 3 3 CALLING ALL 1st GRADERS TO JOIN DI CHILDREN S CHOIR The Divine Infant Children s Choir is welcoming 1 st graders to join the group of 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th graders as they prepare for the Lent and Easter seasons. Next rehearsal is Sunday, January 20, at 8:30 am in the music room of DI School. All rehearsals are Sundays at this time except when the children are scheduled to sing at mass or there is a special event. For more information or to let us know your 1 st grade child is planning to join us, please Mrs. Janet Reif, DI Music Director, at jreif@me.com or call and leave a message with your child s name and your phone number or address ( preferred). HOLY HOUR THIS FRIDAY The Holy Hour for January will be this Friday, January 18, at 7:30pm in Church. We will use this time to pray for the mothers, fathers, and families that have been the victims of the abortion industry since abortion was legalized on January 22, We will pray for the conversion of those involved in the abortion industry. We will also pray that abortion will be abolished in our country and the world. Please join us in prayer. SUPPORT THE COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other programs to share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more about how you can make a difference, please visit WOMEN S CARE CENTER OF LAGRANGE HELPING WOMEN IN OUR AREA Since we as a parish support the Women s Center of Lagrange, they want you to know how things are going as of the first of this year. What follows are the current statistics. Right now, we have served 418 women, we have performed 463 Ultrasounds and we have 312 babies expected to our moms! It is truly wonderful! This is since they opened in late April. We are blessed to have this center close to our parish. They are located at 136 N. LaGrange Road in LaGrange. If you wish to visit them, they would love to have you come but they request that you call in advance so that it will not interfere with their counseling services. Their number is (708) They are open Monday through Friday from 9-5. Keep them in your prayers.
PARISH INFORMATION 2 4 HOSPITALITY SUNDAY Next Sunday, January 20th after the 9:30am mass. All bakers welcome and appreciated. INTERFAITH CAREER NETWORK Winter 2019 Career Search and Development Boot Camp - Week 1 Join us on Tuesday, January 15, from 7-9 pm for the first of a 5-week workshop at the First Presbyterian Church of La Grange, 150 South Ashland Avenue.. Week 1 will kick off with an overview of the State of the Job Market. Keynote speaker, Heather Davis, will share her success story in re-entering the workforce after a lengthy absence and Dr. Joe Yount will deliver a special presentation on building self-confidence for your career search. There is no cost to attend and you are encouraged to attend every session to make the most out of this training. Please enter the church on Catherine Avenue. For further information, contact Susan Sedler at sqsedler@aol.com. How to Use The Internet to Find Your Next Opportunity Are you tired of applying to job postings and not getting any response? Join us on Thursday, January 17 from 7-9 pm and learn how to stop doing that time consuming chore that gets very little results and instead, do what will get you noticed by recruiters and hiring managers. We will explore ways to find contact information as well as other tools to network your way into your next opportunity. Our speaker, Kevin Crews, has over 25 years of experience as a recruiter and over 15 years as a career coach. We look forward to seeing you at St. John of the Cross Parish Center, 5005 S. Wolf Road in Western Springs. This meeting is open to everyone and there is no cost to attend. WOULD SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE BE FOR YOU? Spiritual Guidance affords you the time, in a sacred space, to create your personal contact information in order for God to contact you in prayers. When this happens, your life takes on a whole new perspective and you will be exceedingly surprised by how God will work in your life. If you think you d like to try letting God plan your life along with you, contact Sister Susan, CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Nearly 40 million people experience poverty in the United States. Respond to the call to work for justice and proclaim the good news of the Gospel by learning more about how poverty affects families and communities and how the Church is responding by visiting PovertyUSA.org, a website of the U.S. Catholic bishops. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window o n e l a s t t i m e. --James Field, Copyright (c) J.
