THE CROWN

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Of all the commercials on television, the ones I dislike the most are those hawking prescription medications. I think it is very poor judgment on the part of drug manufacturers and advertising agencies to try to sell something to people when only a physician can, after having made a clinical diagnosis, prescribe it. Of course, that does not mean that I do not find these commercials rather entertaining. The gentle succession of images of happy people enjoying life coupled with the truly terrifying narration of the drug's warnings and side effects is a hoot. As we see happy people talking, laughing, riding bicycles, playing with their dog and hiking in the mountains, the narrator says: Insomnia, bad breath, hardening of the arteries, herpes, and geriatric profanity disorder no longer have to limit your enjoyment of life. Anacanasanafran might be right for you. Anacanasanafran has been shown to improve symptoms in 51% of patients. Do not take Anacanasanafran with food or on an empty stomach as this might lead to death. Patients who are pregnant, have been pregnant, or plan to become pregnant should not take Anacanasanfran. Side effects of Anacanasanafran include itching and rash, shortness of breath, nausea, baldness, liver disease, tumors, and dry mouth. Do not take Anacanasanfran while breathing. If your heart stops beating, stop taking Anacanasanafran and call your doctor immediately as this may indicate a life threatening condition. Ask your doctor if Anacanasanafran is right for you. When I see these commercials, I make a little decision that when I am at the point in my life that I may need to take Anacanasanafran, I will consider other options including, but not limited to, dying. That is not because I am morbid or fatalistic. It is simply because I realize that some day each and every one of us will arrive at the point where, in regards to our health, we have nowhere to turn. So when that moment arrives, just where, or to whom, does one turn? Today's gospel provides that answer. After Jesus heals the ten lepers, he sends them to the priest. The Jewish priest's job was to be doctor and judge. He examined the leprous, unclean person and judged him to be healed or not. But the one leper does not go to the priest because he cannot. He is a Samaritan not a Jew. He is a foreign devil. Even though Jesus healed him, he is still unclean. The priest cannot do anything for him. He is a filthy, foreign devil and will always be unclean leprosy or not. That is why the Samaritan goes back to Jesus. It is the only place he can go. The only way he can be clean is when he is with Jesus. That is why he comes back. Ultimately, we are all that Samaritan leper. At some point in our lives, we will have nowhere else to turn. All the Anacanasanafran in the world will not help us, but Christ will. Christ is the one who welcomes us unclean as we are. The only place we can go is to Christ. This is why we celebrate the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick at the 5pm and 930am Masses this weekend. Certainly, physicians and medications can help us tremendously, but they cannot help us ultimately. At some point -- and this is an iron-clad guarantee -- physicians and medications will fail us. There will be no cure. When that happens, all we can do is to turn to Christ. Christ offers us more than a cure. He offers us healing. Healing means that no matter what is happening with our bodies, we know that deep down we are created in God's holy image, we are good, and we are loved. In that love of God, we are whole. We are healed. That is what Anointing of the Sick gives us. It gives us healing in the knowledge that we are always God's beloved children who are beautiful and whole in his eyes. That is something that no doctor or medication can give us. Best of all, it has no negative side effects. So, rather than as a last resort, make it your first resort to turn to Christ. Come to him and let him heal you. Let Christ touch your soul and make you know that you are whole and good and loved. Forget about Anacanasanafran. Ask your doctor if Christ is right for you. Fr. Michael

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, October 2016 Jubilee of Mercy This year marks the 20th Anniversary of our Inclusion in Worship partnership with Pathways.org to ensure that every person, regardless of ability, is offered the same respect and opportunity to participate with other parishioners in their place of worship. Cardinal Bernardin began this partnership out of a deep commitment to helping children of God and Cardinal George offered a fresh impetus to it. Each of us have a role in promoting and forming an inclusive worship environment while enhancing our gifts to build a stronger faith community. Please join me in renewing our commitment to helping parishioners of all abilities fully join us in worship. It is my wish that the Archdiocese of Chicago and its agencies continue to welcome all in celebrating Inclusions Awareness Sunday on October 9th, In celebrating this event, we will draw attention to our efforts to make our communities more welcoming where everyone is valued. Many parishes have already taken steps in designing spaces for greater accessibility. Together we continue our efforts to make our places of worship even more welcoming for full participation in parish life. For resources to assist your local community in learning more about ways to design inclusive ministry plans, please visit Inclusion in Worship offers grants of $1,000 to help fund projects that improve physical accessibility, audio and sound transmission, and parish life inclusion. The celebration of Inclusion Awareness Day will help others witness their faith in a valued and supported faith community. Know of my gratitude and my prayers for all that you do. Sincerely yours in Christ, NEW PARISHIONERS Jeff and Heather LaPorte Rodolfo and Eileen Espiritu Ricardo Contreras and Birgit Estrada and Sucel and Cecilia Contreras PROLIFE BAKE SALE The annual Pro-Life bakesale is being held after all the Masses this weekend, October 8-9. The money we make at the sale we use to help pay for our activities at Divine Infant during the year. We will be in Langan Hall at 3PM on October 8 to accept your delicious treats. Come down on Saturday until all are served after 5pm Mass and Sunday from 7:15 until all are served after 11:30 Mass and purchase some of our goodies. You won t be disappointed. Thank you for helping us stand up for life. THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who helped on Respect Life Sunday. Thank you to those who carried the banner and helped with the items in the vestibule. Thank you to everyone who helped us hand out A Brief Catechism for Catholic Voters after the Masses. Thank you to the people from Divine Infant and Divine Providence parishes (and even some friends of a parishioner from Schaumberg) who showed up to pray the Rosary for a change of minds and hearts in America to end abortion. A huge thank you goes to Deacon Jim Sinacore who led us in praying the 4 mysteries of the Rosary all 20 decades. We had almost forty people show up - children, even a baby in the womb, middle age and elderly praying a good representation of our parishes. We only wish we had more people out there standing up for the children and the mothers and fathers who are destroyed by abortion. We plan on being on Mannheim again next year on the first Sunday of October October 1, Mark your calendar and plan to be there. Keep praying. Thank you and God bless. Most Revered Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago CIRCLE THE DATE: Saturday, October 15, :00 noon I want to invite you to join me in a public rosary rally at 1657 Balmoral Ave., Westchester for Our Lady of Fatima. Any questions, please call Gloria

Here are some children in Kindergarten having fun putting together a United States puzzle with Sr. Carolyn. Each Tuesday morning, Primary grades gather in the hall for morning prayers. Each teacher takes a turn selecting and sharing a prayer with the group. It s really quite touching seeing and hearing all of the children joined together in prayer.

JOIN ONE OF OUR MUSIC GROUPS The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Advent/Christmas season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our organizational rehearsal on Wednesday, October 19, from 7:15 PM until 8:30 PM in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that rehearsal. The DI Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come to us with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the instrument. This group has already started their season but Mrs. Schindler, our organist, is always happy to meet new young people interested in joining this group. New this year is a group of junior high students from our School and Religious Education classes that we are calling DI Singers. Our school children are rehearsing on Mondays as part of their liturgical music studies. Our Religious Education students practice from 6:10-6:30 on Mondays before RE classes. Please encourage anyone in grades 6-8 who likes to sing to join our group. They will sing once a month with another choir for this year. Welcome DI Singers! The Strings of Faith are already in session for the season. They are currently working on their full season schedule. We welcome back our DI Hand Chimes Ensemble who are already rehearsing and planning for the season. You will see a few new young members who have joined this year. Our DI Children s Choir (grades 2-4) has already begun their season. We welcomed a few new voices in this choir, too, during September! The children rehearse on Sunday mornings from 8:30 am - 9:15 am in the music room of the school and sing once a month at Sunday mass. This group will be open to new membership including 1st graders right after Christmas! The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. We welcomed Mary Pytko our cantor program this summer. We plan to feature our new cantors from the last couple of years in our Cantor Corner on the Music tab of the DI Web Site soon. The DI Resurrection Choir sings year-round at funerals. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice and availability for funerals Monday through Saturday usually at 10am when there is a funeral. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Judy Schindler, our organist, who coordinates this ministry. For further information about any of our music groups, please contact Janet Reif, Music Director, at or e- mail jreif@me.com EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION TRAINING For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. (Rom. 12:4-5) As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to serve one another. In the liturgy of the Mass we express our faith in the real presence of Christ as we receive the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. One of the best ways to answer the call to serve is to distribute Holy Communion during the Mass. There will be a training be become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion on Saturday, October 15 at 3PM in the Rectory. If you would like to become an Extraordinary Minister, please register at the Rectory, (708) WOMEN S GUILD CLOTHING DRIVE Are you doing fall cleaning? 7 BLOOD DRIVE 2 more blood drives; pick one The Westchester Blood Program will sponsor two more drives this year. The organization, which collects more blood for hospitals than any other community program in northeastern Illinois, has scheduled these drives for Saturday, Oct. 15, and Tuesday, Nov. 15. The first drive, part of the WBP's regular schedule, will be at the Community Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second one is special: The Turkey Drive. This is the fifth year for this event, nine days before Thanksgiving. The first 50 donors who give a unit of blood will receive vouchers for free turkeys at Mariano's. The hours will be from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the donations will be made in a LifeSource bloodmobile parked in the lot between the Community Center and Westchester Community Church. Pre-donation registration will take place in a classroom of the church's education wing. For this drive, donors must have appointment times. To obtain a time slot, call Carl Panek at NOTE: Because of the short time between these drives, a donor cannot take part in both. The Mass will start at 2 PM on October 16 th at St Gertrude Church, 1400 West Granville, Chicago (6200 North, and 4 blocks west of Broadway at Granville and Glenwood.)
