2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR One of my favorite childhood memories was decorating the house for Christmas. In mid- December, Dad would go out to the garage and bring in boxes of decorations. There was one very large box that was almost as tall as I was. All sorts of treasures came out of that cold, musty box. There were strings of colored lights, home-made ornaments, and yards of garland. All the way at the bottom of the box was the Nativity set. It was pretty basic. The cardboard barn contained figures of St. Joseph, baby Jesus (who looked to be about three years-old), the Theotokos, and two sheep. But it felt like something was missing. In fact, much was missing: no shepherds, no angels, no magi, no ox. To remedy this, my brother Steven and I added a tiny plastic cow. The cow was smaller than baby Jesus, but it helped. It made the scene more complete. I still have that nativity set. Everybody is still there: the Holy Family, the sheep, and the cow. But now the membership has grown. I have added three more Christmas essentials: St. Nicholas, the Grinch, and Neil Armstrong standing on the surface of the Moon. But I know the scene is not complete. There is always room for more to come and worship at the manger. In fact, the mystery of Christmas demands it. This Christmas I invite you to be like the cow, St. Nicholas, the Grinch, and Neil Armstrong. I invite you to make the scene complete. At Christmas time, we want and expect many things to make the season beautiful and meaningful. We want to have a tree with lights and gifts. We expect to spend time with family and friends. These things are wonderful, but they do not make Christmas complete. You make Christmas complete. At Christmas we celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation. That is, God becomes human so that we may become divine. That means that even though Jesus was born 2,000 years ago, Christmas really happens now. The Incarnation happens now, right now, as you read this, as you take a breath, as your heart beats. God is filling you, dwelling in you, working to transform you into the divine creature he made you to be. So I invite you to put yourself into the Christmas scene. Make yourself a major character in the mystery of the Incarnation. Do that by living this season with a heightened awareness of divinity in you and in everyone and everything around you. Come celebrate that divinity by joining in the divine mysteries we celebrate in church. Add yourself to our reconciliation liturgy this coming Saturday the 21st at 10am. Put yourself front and center in our Christmas Masses. Use these sacramental icons of the Incarnation to help you to perceive the true meaning of Christmas: God is with us. God is in us. May the celebration of Christmas show you that of all the characters in the nativity scene, the most important one is you. Our parish depends heavily on our Christmas collection. 3 HAPPY ADVENT! With Advent we begin a new Church year. Advent calls us to take time from the busyness of the season to really pray and let the true meaning of Christmas enter our hearts. It is available on-line at ewtnreligiouscatalogue.com for $2.50. THE POPE WANTS TO HEAR FROM US! Pope Francis has called an extraordinary synod to address the topic, Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the context of Evangelization, that will take place in Rome in October Parishioners are asked to contribute comments through a survey. Detailed information on how to participate can be found on the Archdiocesan website through the following link: Survey responses have to be received at the Archdiocese by December 16, Participating is easy, just follow the instructions on the Archdiocesan website. Never before have they asked for feedback from the whole church in this way, please participate! GIVING TREE Please stop by the Giving Tree located in the vestibule of the church. Gifts will be given to St. Martin de Porres Parish. Take an ornament with the age of the recipient, put the size of the clothing in the space provided and return the package to the vestibule of the church. All gifts must be returned by Sunday, December 15th. Thank you for your generosity! THE LITTLE THINGS ADD UP I thank everyone for contributing greeting cards to my collection basket. The Christmas cards, etc. have been sorted, bundled and distributed. On September 5th, I gave 950 Secular Christmas cards, 550 Religious Christmas cards, 1,050 blankinside note cards, and 850 birthday cards from my inventory to a chaplain at Dixon State Correctional Center. They were very much appreciated. Since then, you have donated cards that have been donated to Safer Foundation in Chicago, totaling 3,600 Secular Christmas cards, 1,300 Religious Christmas cards, 450 blank-inside Christmas cards, and 150 birthday cards. On behalf of the many, many people who will be able to send greetings to their loved ones because of your generosity, I wish to express a GREAT BIG THANK YOU for your kindness! Fr. Tom

4 In a cross-curricular art project with Mrs. Jacklin s Social Studies class, fifth graders made buffalo hides out of butcher block paper. They learned that Native Americans told stories using symbols and pictures, such as animals, plants, and celestial objects. They would decorate their buffalo hides using these symbols. Pictured are Melphina Egbutu and Alexa Zornoza Finishing up their lesson on Thanksgiving, the Pre- School and Pre-K class made Thankful Angels. The children painted paper Christmas trees green. They then added lights using different colors of paint, The lights show us that Jesus is the Light of the World. Pictured are: Damian Brambila and Brandon Rodriguez First Grade has been learning all about Geometry. They learned about symmetry which is when one shape becomes exactly like another if you flip, slide or turn it. They had a lot of fun during Art class when they took ½ of a photograph or themselves and drew the matching part.

5 TEENS ON FIRE: DIVINE INFANT YOUTH GROUP NEWS The Youth Group will conduct a 30-Hour Fast/ Overnight Retreat to raise money to help the hungry and poor of our community. This will take place on from Friday December 20th at 6:00 pm to Saturday December 21st. We will end our Fast at the 5:00 pm Mass followed by dinner. This will take place at Divine Infant. This will be open to all youth from 6th to 12th grades. The Fast and all activities of the retreat are designed in this season of plenty to connect the youth with the struggles of the homeless/poor/ hungry and less fortunate. Consider sponsoring a youth for the Fast. All the participants will have pledge sheets and will be looking for sponsors. You can also choose to write a check or give a cash donation to the youth participating by dropping it off at the rectory in an envelope marked, 30-Hour Fast. If you would like to sponsor our dinner for all the youth after the Fast is over, contact Jim Negrete or the rectory. Our Youth groups are open to all 6th to 12th graders who attend our school, religious education program or are in the community. All are always welcome. St. Catherine of Siena THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE The Sacrament of Penance is one of the Sacraments of Healing. Through Christ. we are healed or made well again and reconciled or brought back into right relationship with God and each other. The foundation of reconciliation can be seen in the psalms of the Old Testament. Psalm 51, the Prayer of Repentance, contains the elements of the Sacrament we celebrate now: the acknowledgement of sin, plea for forgiveness, renewal of heart, expression of sorrow, acts of penitence and reconciliation. In the New Testament, reconciliation is in and through the person of Christ. In answering the invitation of God to conversion, we respond and are renewed in spirit. We reaffirm who we became at our Baptism: people clothed in Christ and members of His Body the Church. Through His death, Christ instituted the forgiveness of sins. After His Resurrection, He sent the Holy Spirit to give His Apostles and their successors the power to forgive sins through His Church. The priest, as minister of the Sacrament, represents both Christ and Christ s Body, the Church. We confess our sins out loud to a priest so that upon hearing those sins, he can give absolution, assuring us that our sins are truly forgiven. The Revised Rite of Penance contains the Rite for Reconciliation of Individual Penitents. This liturgical celebration of the Sacrament is available each week. The Rite for Reconciliation of Several Penitents is usually celebrated during the liturgical Seasons of Advent and Lent. Both Rites are individual and communal in nature, as are all liturgical celebrations, and they belong to the people as a whole. While the confession of sins is a component of the ritual action of the penitent, spiritual guidance to overcome the root cause of sin and to continue on the journey to salvation is part of this celebration. The grace and mercy of God is a call we should respond to with joy and not fear. 7 HEALING TOUCH Christmas is upon us. It is a time for decorations, baking, parties and un-ending shopping and gift giving. It is also a time for us to stop and reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. God bestowed upon us the gift of his only begotten son. Through this gift, we have reason to celebrate and rejoice. We have a reason to embrace life and live life to its fullest. We also have a reason to stop and give God a gift in return. We can give Him a gift of healing ourselves in body, mind and spirit. This gift of self-healing can enable us to have renewed strength and love to pass on to God and one another. Looking for any last minute gifts? Think about giving the gift of Healing Touch to someone who is in need of healing. Healing Touch is a form of complementary healing that, through touch, allows Divine healing energy to flow so that self-healing may take place. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul thinks about these people all year long. Their actions speak for themselves. Their work is life-saving helping individuals and families avoid slipping into poverty by assisting with utility bills, rent, food, transportation, medical expenses and even emotional and spiritual support. As you prepare for Christmas, consider setting aside part of your shopping budget to help the Society continue its good works with a tax-deductible charitable donation or perhaps setting aside time by joining the many volunteers who see the face of the Christ Child in those they serve. Deadline is December 28th DIVINE INFANT YOUNG COMPOSER Perhaps you were at the 11:30 am Mass on the Feast of Christ the King. If so, you heard our young trumpet quartet playing the prelude. This musical piece was composed by our very own Aidan Walton. Aidan is a Sophomore at Nazareth Academy. He is a promising young performer and composer. We look forward to hearing more of his music composed for our Divine Infant community. The other trumpeters performing that day were Will Ernst, (who plans to major in music next year) and Marcel Tworek and Sara Groppe. We are proud of our young musicians!

10 VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED Speaking with people of a different culture, making new contacts, and a feeling of self-satisfaction are some of the benefits one might reap from volunteering at School on Wheels, sponsored by the Congregation of St. Joseph of La Grange Park. Volunteers are needed for the school s Adult Literacy/ English as a Second Language program. Tutors are asked to teach one hour or more per week, during the hours of 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, or 3:00 to 8:00 pm at locations in Brookfield, Cicero, Downers Grove, Hodgkins, Woodridge, Villa Park, or Summit. No prior second language skills are needed. However, it is necessary to attend a two-day tutor training session from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Saturdays, January 11th, and January 25th, 2014, at the Congregation of St. Joseph Center in La Grange Park. Psalm 104:19 MAYSLAKE MINISTRIES PROGRAM Men's Silent Retreat Why After You, Brother Francis? A Retreat on St Francis of Assisi inspired by Pope Francis January 10-12, 2014 We invite men to join us for a retreat in January. What a wonderful way to begin the New Year! We were all amazed and delighted when our "surprise Pope" in his first official act chose St Francis of Assisi as his patron and indeed the name by which he would be known. We at Mayslake Ministries have made a similar choice for the theme of our preached retreat In this retreat, we ask our new pope what Francis' companion, Brother Masseo, asked Francis when yet another person came into the woods where he was praying to seek his counsel. "Why after you, Brother Francis, why does all the world run after you?" In this retreat, we ask the same question of Pope Francis. Surely when a man of his distinction makes such a critical choice as that of his own name, we need to ask him what he sees in Francis that the whole church and the rest of the world needs to see. Four sessions, prayer services and Eucharist will be presented by Fr. Jonathan Foster and Christine Grano. Red Stripes remind us of the blood shed by Christ on the cross for us so that we may have eternal life. The candy cane is formed into a J to represent the precious name of Jesus. It also represents the staff of the Good Shepherd. Its hard consistency represents the Solid Rock, the foundation of the church and the firmness of the promises of Christ.

By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
