2 WHERE HAVE ALL THE PEOPLE GONE? Did you know that Roman Catholics are the largest religious denomination in America? Almost one out of four Americans are Catholic. Yet the second largest grouping is made up of ex-catholics! Out of 100 million babies baptized Catholic, only 78 million now grown up will claim being Catholic! That means 22% have disappeared! Church attendance is also pathetic. When I was ordained in 1969, I was shocked to hear only 55% of people were at Mass on any given Sunday. By 1985 it was down to 41%. Today it is below 25%! Here at Divine Infant Jesus we have about 3,000 registered Catholics. A lot more are not registered. We only get about 750 coming to Mass on Sunday, and even less in the summer. Where have they all gone? I will never forget August 23, I was a senior in college and drove with a classmate to St. Louis. We attended the 25 th annual Liturgical Conference. Vatican II had given the green light to translating the Mass into the language of the people. It was suppose to start in Advent at the end of November. Special permission had been given to have the very first English Mass in the history of the world at this conference. We joined over 20,000 people to participate in this Mass. What a thrill to hear for the first time ever the Scripture in English. We were allowed to pray and sing in English! The priest no longer faced the back wall, but turned around and faced the people. Lay lectors and cantors proclaimed the scripture. It was well over a thousand years since people could pray as we now could. I was convinced these liturgical reforms would fill our churches with enthusiastic worshipers. How wrong I was. What went wrong? Where did all the people go? Of course, this is too complex to give a simple answer in one bulletin article. But I would like to offer something to think about. In the past, we were somewhat successful in getting people to church because of the fear of hell. We always taught, and still do, that it is a mortal sin to skip Mass on Sunday, unless you are sick, or have to take care of a sick person who cannot be left alone, or some other legitimate excuse. To die in the state of mortal sin means going to hell. The people did not want to go to hell, so they came to Mass. Then people came to believe God would not send them to hell for missing Mass, even though the Church never changed its rules or teaching. Many came to believe, if you are nice to your family and don t cheat anyone, that is all that is necessary. God does not care if we ever bother to pray or worship. It is okay for those who want to, but not essential. As for me I would not want to gamble my eternal salvation on such a vague theory of what God expects. If we stop eating because of anorexia, we die. If we do not get our spiritual food, we also die. Spiritual death is mortal sin, a choice against eternal life. On a deeper level, I do not believe we catechize in the right way. We send our kids to Catholic School, or religious education classes, and hope for the best. They make their first, and too often last, confession. They receive their first Communion, and some years later, Confirmation. I look in vain for the newly confirmed to come back to church in future weeks. What we fail to do is make intentional disciples. We do not effectively teach our young people to have a real and personal relationship with the Lord. Intentional discipleship means daily conversation with Jesus. We need to talk to him every morning and every night of our lives. The dying and rising of Jesus needs to be the center of our belief system. To give thanks every Sunday and to enter the dying and rising of Jesus is essential. We need to listen to God in the Scripture as it is proclaimed. To fail to have a lively personal relationship with Jesus and his Church is to be dead. Cardinal Cupich, as our Archbishop, is leading us in a huge process of faith renewal. His Renew My Church initiative is meant to revitalize us. Evangelization is one of seven focuses of Renew My Church. I hope we can begin some Evangelization efforts here at Divine Infant Jesus. We need to lead people be intentional disciples. We need to find where everyone has gone and bring them home. You will hear more about this in the future. In the meantime, pray for those who no longer come to Mass. Pray that they come home. Father Mike Ahlstrom Administrator, Divine Infant Jesus

6 THE 100 TH ANNIVERSARY OF OUR LADY S APPEARANCES AT FATIMA WHAT HAS SHE ASKED US TO DO? Our Lady is our Mother. She appeared to the three children at Fatima a century ago to give us ways to help us on our journey to eternity. She warned that too many souls are lost because of sins they have chosen to commit. She even showed the children a vision of Hell, which they reported was so terrible that they felt they would die of fright. Mary has requested that we pray and sacrifice. Please listen to your Mother s requests. The Blessed Virgin promised to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to confession, receive Holy Communion, say the Rosary and spend a quarter of an hour with her in meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary with the object of making reparation to her Immaculate Heart. In 1926, Christ in a vision explained to Lucia that this confession could be made a week before or even more, and that it should be offered in reparation. The Blessed Mother asked the children to pray and make sacrifices for sinners for many souls go to hell because there is no one to pray for them or make sacrifices for them. She asked us to make reparation for the sins and outrages perpetrated against God's Grace and blasphemies against the Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Offer up your daily sacrifices for this intention. Our Lady appeared to Jacinta several times before she died. She told her many things. Today take some time to think and pray about this. The sins of the world are very great if only men knew what eternity is, they would do everything in their power to change their lives. Fly from riches and luxury; love poverty and silence; have charity, even for bad people. More souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason. Certain fashions will be introduced that will offend Our Lord very much. Woe to women lacking in modesty. Each time the Blessed Virgin appeared to the three children at Fatima, She repeated Her request that we pray the Rosary each day. In the final vision, on October 13, 1917, Our Lady silently held out the Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel as a sign of Her desire that we undertake this great devotion. In fact, Sister Lucy has stated that "the Scapular and the Rosary are inseparable." Emerging from faith, prayer becomes the unshakeable foundation for peace in Heaven's plan for our salvation. Our Blessed Mother requested that we make a consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on a personal basis. This is in addition to the request that the Pope in conjunction with all of the Bishops consecrate the world and especially Russia to her Immaculate Heart. You can prepare to do this right now. If you wish to consecrate yourself to the Immaculate Heart of Mary using Louis de Montfort s Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary that takes 33 days or 33 Days to Morning Glory by Father Michael Gaitley, begin on September 10 to consecrate on October 13, the 100th anniversary of the sixth apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. Our Lady wants us and all of our brothers and sisters to be in Heaven. She has given us a formula. Heed her warning, and follow her wishes.

The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was written in quite mystical and figurative language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it m e r e l y a c l e v e r m y t h? Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Matthew's Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one until "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead" (Matthew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfiguration of Jesus in his second letter to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased," and he assures us that the message is "altogether reliable" (2 Peter 1:17, 19).
