2 PASTOR S COLUMN 2 LENT IS A TIME TO REMEMBER TO CONTINUALLY KEEP OUR EYES FIXED ON JESUS Both parishes of Divine Infant and Providence will use the words of St. Paul which extorts us to continue to Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as our Lenten theme and point of reflection. Some initial thoughts about St. Paul s encouragement may seem to be a bit pious and unattainable due to our present circumstances and future struggles. We would hope that upon reading and reflecting on the message, you will understand the profundity of St. Paul s message and how it truly is speaking to our situation presently. Challenges are nothing new to humanity; each generation is tasked to meet those struggles and move past them, hopefully becoming stronger in the process. The same holds true in our spiritual and faith lives as well. St. Paul instructs the Hebrews to persevere through their hardships telling the faithful of his time that they are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses which will help them persevere and run the good race, keeping their eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the leader and protector of the faith. We too, are challenged with the events which have taken place over the past couple of years. The challenge is simple: For many years we have all come to know and love the parish we are members of and that structure as we know it will take on a new form. No one is happy about the change; some think the answer to the problem was never fully answered; others contend the new direction has occurred without knowing the community; still, there are those who cannot understand the logic of having two places and one parish. All those concerns are valid, but to be fair, something had to change. You know well, economics is a big factor in education and Catholic education is no exception. Teachers who have invested their own time and funds to achieve accreditation to teach children, in justice, deserve to be paid and have health care. One thing that is rarely mentioned is the correlation between the decline in church attendance and the decline of the number of students and families requesting Catholic education. There are not as many students available now as there were even five years ago. Every person who worships regularly in both churches can t help but notice that many individuals who once worshipped beside you no longer come to Church on a regular basis. Some of them have passed away, and some of them for whatever reason do not feel compelled to worship every Sunday. Those are younger parishioners along with middle-aged and some elderly. It is not a stretch to correlate the lack of priests and vocations directly to the loss of population in parishes across the world. Those are the arguments and those are the facts. One thing is true about human nature: it is easier to focus on the negative than it is the positive. Why? Because focusing on the negative costs a person little; focusing on the positive urges action and energy. But what is more positive than to believe and conform to a life knowing that Jesus saved us from death and prepared for us a way to life eternal! This Lent is a good time to put into perspective why we first believed and became disciples of Jesus. Too many distractions have surfaced since and some of those distractions have taken on a life which distorts the fundamental principle of discipleship, our relationship with Jesus Christ. That relationship is not a building, it is not a history, and it is not an organization which was first conceived to help the mission and now is seen as the mission itself. Keeping our eyes on Jesus reminds each of us that the faith we profess is a transcendent reality between God and his precious creatures. It is the invitation to enter into and participate in the divine life. The divine life, which is grace, is given to us through the person of Jesus Christ, and more specifically through the sacramental life of the Church, which he himself instituted when he died on the cross for our sins. Human beings have been fed by Jesus in the Eucharist; they have been reconciled and healed through Jesus Christ. That is exactly what a sacrament is: the invitation through Jesus Christ to share divine life. For a believer, the participation in the divine life is the most fundamental principle of our faith. Perhaps, the Hebrews which St. Paul was preaching to had a similar problem; maybe they lost sight for a while when they turned their gaze away from Jesus. Last week the formal decree was published in both bulletins, the future was not in doubt. Very soon we will officially be one local flock of Christ. We are urging all of our faithful people to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus this Lent and begin to believe we share something extremely powerful. We are a united and undivided group of faithful in Westchester who together seek and desire the life of God within us and the strengths which come from a united people, wherever they live, professing the same message of salvation. During the season of Lent, we are working to bring together both congregations for certain events. More information will be published in your respective bulletins in the weeks ahead. We urge you to consider and participate in those offerings. Until then, may we all have the courage and determination to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus this Lent. With the help of God, we are confident we will all grow in our commitment we first made when we came to believe that Jesus is the source of life now and for ever. Fr. Marcin Fr. Tim

3 PARISH INFORMATION ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Come, Follow Me...and Share the Word Last weekend we participated in the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Thank you to everyone who participated. If you were away you can still participate this weekend. Our parish goal is $31, To date we have only received pledges of $11,676.00, so we are short around $20, Please remember that once we reach our goal of paid pledges, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration. NEXT WEEKEND MASSES Next weekend Fr. Tim Fiala from Divine Providence will be preaching at all the weekend masses here at Divine Infant. The following weekend, March 16-17, Fr. Marcin will be preaching at all the masses at Divine Providence. DEEPEN YOUR LENTEN JOURNEY On Tuesday mornings, following the 7:30 AM morning Mass at Divine Providence or the 8 AM morning Mass at Divine Infant, all are invited to a one hour session of conversation and information about every person s walk with the Lord. The spiritual masters in our tradition have recognized common patterns in everyone s prayer and faith. We begin with enthusiasm a honeymoon sort of feeling. Warm fuzzies come for a while only to disappear. The saints tell us that is good news! Get over that and journey deeper into God, even in the midst of sorrow and struggle. Share your insights with others in this easy, lowstress conversation around the table with a cup of coffee in hand. Deacon Richard Hudzik and Father Tim will again lead this series on the Tuesdays of Lent, at Divine Providence beginning on March 12 and continuing for the following four weeks. In recognition of the coming merger of Divine Providence with Divine Infant, we are rotating the site between the two Divines. The first week will be at Divine Providence. The week following will be at Divine Infant following their 8 AM morning Mass. Also in recognition of the coming merger, Divine Infant s Deacon Jim Sponder will be accompanying us. The week after that, we will be back at Divine Providence and continue the rotation until the final session on April 9 at Divine Providence. At Divine Providence we will meet in the Church, at Divine Infant we will meet in the Vestibule. Wednesday of this week is Ash Wednesday. Ashes will be distributed during the 8:00 am and 7:00 pm Mass. Ashes will also be distributed during Liturgy of the Word at 12:15 and 4:00 pm. STATIONS OF THE CROSS This year stations of the cross will be a little different. With the coming merger of Divine Infant and Divine Providence we will be alternating weeks at each Church. The first Friday, March 8th will be at Divine Providence, the following Friday, March 15th will be at Divine Infant and so on. Please see the Lent schedule for further dates.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian Initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance. (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, #27) By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. (On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance.

5 LENT INFORMATION 5 STEWARDSHIP FOR LENT 2019 HELPING ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday concerns itself with what has become a traditional three-part Lenten exercise: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Jesus instructs his followers to turn to God, to turn from self-interest and to deepen their relationship with the Lord in secret. He tells them in effect that a humble and quiet pattern of prayer, self-denial and reaching out to others is transforming and leads to a favorable outcome. What is our plan to turn ever closer to God in this Lenten season? Are we prepared to treat this season as a time to deepen our own relationship with the One who redeemed us? It has been a tradition at Divine Infant Jesus Parish to donate food, paper and cleaning products, and personal products to our St. Vincent de Paul society to distribute to members of our community in need. Below are specified items to be donated during each week of Lent. These are merely suggestions and any food product, etc., is welcome at any time. Monetary donations are always appreciated as they are used to purchase gift cards and for emergencies. Our faith is reflected most strongly in our actions to help the most vulnerable, especially those who hunger. May God continue to bless your generous hearts. Note that we serve a Gluten Free Family so those products are appreciated as well. PRAYER FOR LENT LOVING GOD, as the season of Lent unfolds, you call us to return again and again. As you invite us to reflect on your love made visible in the person of Jesus, align our lives more closely with you through prayer, fasting and generous giving. Bless our desire to accompany Jesus suffering here and now in the crucified people of our world. With your grace, may we live Lent fully and move with transformed hearts into the abundant life of Easter morning. AMEN. 7 PRO-LIFE 7 LEGISLATIVE ALERT! Two extreme bills were filed in the Illinois legislature on February 13, They contain abortion provisions, anti-healthcare provisions and anti-religious freedom provisions that are similar to bills filed in New York and other states. HB 2495 is also called the Reproductive Health Act (RHA). The corresponding IL Senate Bill is SB This 120 page bill makes many changes to current law, including: Allows a procedure known as a partial-birth abortion that aborts an unborn human during the birthing process, allows abortion for all nine months of pregnancy for any reason, and may allow medical staff to let a newborn die if the baby is born after a failed abortion. Requires health insurance policies to include abortions coverage, with no exemptions. This means Illinois will force churches, religious colleges, and other religious organizations to forgo health insurance or compromise their faith and have abortion included in their health insurance. Removes some conscience protections which, depending on how a court rules, may close down all Catholic hospitals and some non-catholic hospitals in Illinois and may force many religious doctors, nurses, etc. to stop providing healthcare in Illinois. Allows non-doctors to abort unborn humans, allows self-abortions, removes the requirement that complications from abortions be reported to the state, allows clinics to perform an abortion on a nonpregnant woman who thinks she is pregnant, and allows abortion clinics to pay referral fees (like sales commissions or a kickback) when someone refers a woman to the clinic for an abortion. HB 2467 repeals the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act of 1995 which currently requires that an adult family member is notified before a minor has an abortion in Illinois, except in rare circumstances. The corresponding IL Senate Bill is SB By repealing this law, HB 2467 allows an abortion to be hidden from parents. This undermines parents, who are responsible for their children, and endangers young women since parents will be unable to: o Inform a clinic about the health needs of the minor to avoid complications. o Identify and stop an abuser, sex trafficker, rapist, etc. o Direct the minor to a hospital instead of a poorly regulated abortion clinic. How can I influence the legislative process? Use all the methods below to influence the process. The more methods you use, the more influence you can exercise. Inform family, friends, and leaders of organizations about these bills and encourage them to act Write messages on social media regarding these bills. Contact your Illinois State House Rep and State Senator in five ways: , call the local office, call the Springfield office, write and mail a letter, and visit their office in person. MINISTERS OF CARE NEEDED! Due to illness, limited mobility, or just a time of need, many of our parishioners are unable to join us to celebrate the Eucharist at Sunday Mass. The Ministers of Care make visits to the homebound and to those who are sick and help them stay connected to our Parish Community. This ministry is one of hospitality and compassion and also is spiritually enriching; people working as Ministers of Care will tell you that they have the experience of receiving much more than what they give. Visits don't require a lot of time; please consider joining this very vital ministry. ELMHURST COLLEGE WOMEN S CHORUS COMES TO DI Divine Infant Parish is pleased to announce that The Elmhurst College Women s Chorus is returning to DI on Sunday, March 10, to be our music ministry at the 11:30 am mass. (If you missed hearing them when they were with us two years ago, then you won t want to miss our this year!) Sara Groppe, who is one of our cantors, organist and pianist, and assists with our Children s Choir, is currently the President of The Elmhurst College Women s Chorus. About the Chorus: The Elmhurst College Women s Chorus is an auditioned, select group of vocalists made up of diverse, yet single-minded women who unite with the goal of creating a unique choral experience for their audiences. The Women s Chorus has performed as the featured collegiate ensemble at the IL ACDA Treble Chorus Sing and Share Festival, at the North Central College Women s Chorus Invitational Concert, Mendelssohn s A Midsummer Night s Dream and Gustav Holst s The Planets with the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra and at schools and churches throughout the Midwest. In their mission to build the repertoire of women s choral literature, the Women s Chorus has commissioned choral works by noted choral composers Dr. Andrea Ramsey, Dr. Z. Randall Stroope, Michael Engelhardt, and Robert A. Boyd. The Women s Chorus is directed by Donna Peterson Tallman who received her Master of Music degree in Choral Music Education from Northwestern University and her Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Illinois. She has held faculty positions in Choral Music Education at Northern Illinois University and was Director of Music Education at Illinois Benedictine College. She also taught choral and instrumental music in the public schools of Oak Lawn, Illinois. Currently Ms. Tallman teaches Conducting I, II, and III and directs the Women s Chorus at Elmhurst College, is the music director for Fremd High School s fall musical, Young Frankenstein, and is in her 19 th year teaching private voice lessons at Willowbrook High School.

BAPTISMS: Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd & 3rd Sundays of the month at 12:45 pm. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory ( ) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
