1 A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Lord Jesus, you have chosen your priests from among us and sent them out to proclaim your word and to act in your name. For so great a gift to your Church, we give you praise and thanksgiving. We ask you to fill them with the fire of your love, that their ministry may reveal your presence in the Church. Since they are earthen vessels, we pray that your power shine out throughout their weakness. In their afflictions let them never be crushed; in their doubts never despair; in temptation never be destroyed; in persecution never abandoned. Inspire them through prayer to live each day the mystery of your dying and rising. In times of weakness send them your Spirit, and help them to praise your heavenly Father and pray for poor sinners. By the same Holy Spirit put your words on their lips and your love in their hearts, to bring good news to the poor and healing to the brokenhearted. And may the gift of Mary your mother, to the disciple whom you loved, be your gift to every priest. Grant that she who formed you in her human image, may form them in your divine image, by the power of your Spirit, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Well, I hope all you ghosts and zombies are ready for your big day today. Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. Though Halloween is technically not a liturgical day and sometimes is criticized as being pagan and evil, it is really a wonderful Christian holiday. There is a remarkable parallel between Halloween and Easter. Liturgically, Easter is not just one day. Rather, Easter is one part of a three day celebration: the Paschal Triduum. Paschal means Passover, the Jewish celebration of the passage from slavery to freedom, and Triduum means "three days." On Holy Thursday evening, we begin a single celebration of Christ's sacrifice, death, descent into the abode of the dead, and resurrection from the dead. This weekend, we celebrate the Church's Autumnal Triduum. We have three days that mark Christ's paschal mystery in the lives of the People of God, the Baptized, the Saints. In the center of this triduum is All Saints Day, or as it was called in the olden days, All Hallowsmas. On All Hallowsmas, we celebrate the people of every time and place who have put on Christ in baptism. These are the ones who have died and risen with Christ in the waters of baptism and been clothed by Christ and anointed as Christs, and we call them saints. So All Saints Day is an Easter celebration. Surrounding this Easter day of saints are the two more solemn days of Halloween the eve of All Hallows and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed, more commonly known as All Souls Day. Halloween echoes the darkness and dread of the first day of the Paschal Triduum, the day of sacrifice, Holy Thursday evening through Good Friday evening. Halloween, with all its ghosts and images of death and darkness reminds us that the saints in heaven got to heaven through the door of death. Before Christ rose from the dead, he died on the cross demonstrating to us that God, in the mystery of the Incarnation, enters into every aspect of human life, even the most unpleasant one: death. We have to go through death to get to resurrected life. We have to go through Good Friday to get to Easter Sunday, and we have to go through the spookiness of the eve of All Hallows to get to the heavenly life of the Hallowed. But between the day of sacrifice and the day of resurrection in the Paschal Triduum is the Great Sabbath Holy Saturday. It is a day of nothingness and emptiness. God sleeps in the tomb, and creation silently waits for God to rise to new life. So we end our Autumnal Triduum with All Souls Day. We stick it at the end to remind us that we are still on the journey. We know that the saints are in heaven, and we know that we, the baptized are saints who already share that glory. But we are still on the journey. You and I still have to face the mystery of death. Personally, we do not quite know what the other side of the veil is like. So our Autumnal Triduum leaves us with the question mark of All Souls Day. We do not know. We trust in God's promise of resurrection, but we are a pilgrim people. We wait. We wonder. Each of us has to walk the lonesome valley of death by ourself. So we complete our Autumnal Triduum with the memory of loved ones and the hope that they have passed through the veil and that we will follow them. So enjoy the Autumnal Triduum and have a spooky Eve of All Hallowsmas. And if you really want some horror in your life, try balancing our school budget! That is why our Annual Raffle is such an important event. It is the major fund-raiser for our school, and we depend on it so much. Psalm 145:14 ALL SAINTS DAY The Solemnity of All Saints is Monday the First of November. Because it is a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is dispensed. There will be only one Mass for All Saints Day, Monday, November 1st, at 8:00 am.

3 We don t monkey around when it comes to Innisbrook Fund Raising! Our students raised over $2, Christian Hernandez, Vikas Chavada (our top seller, with Mad Max ), Jodarius Christy, Chris Kulnig, Alexandra Avalos, Mateo Gutierrez and Andrea Brambila, along with several other students, won Mini Max, back-pack clips and other prizes. Thank you to all who participated. Students celebrated Red Ribbon Week with an assortment of activities. They wore red ribbons and signed a banner to show their determination to remain drug free. Kindergarteners made red chains in celebration of Red Ribbon Week. Mrs. Janney s Pre-Kindergarten class performed an American Eagle Dance. This was a Native American heel-toe dance with scarves. Fourth graders sign the school banner. During Mass on Wednesday, October 20th, Fr. Joyce told everyone that God always W.I.N.S.! God Welcomes us, Inspires us, Nourishes us, Sends us. The first grade class wanted to remind everyone of that important message and wrote it with sidewalk chalk on the playground for all to see.

5 DIVINE INFANT ATHLETICS The soccer season has come to an end. Our Varsity Team placed 4th in the Classic League Silver Division while our JV Team finished in the Classic League Gold Division (top 8 teams). Varsity team members Brian Salcedo and Joshua Simmons and Junior Varsity team members Finbar Boyle, Grace Laszkiewicz and William Hesslau II participated in the Classic League All-Star game hosted by Divine Infant at Gladstone Park on October 23rd. JV team member Bobby Grimes was named to the All-Star team as well. The season was a success and we thank our Varsity Coaches Andreas Brandt, Barb Brandt and Mike DeSena and our JV Coaches Mike Laszkiewicz and Chris Medjo Me Zengue for their dedication and hard work. Girls Basketball tips off this week. We will be fielding a 6th grade team and a 7th grade team. Each team is made up of girls from Divine Infant and Divine Providence. Our first game is Tuesday, November 2nd, at St. Mary s in Riverside. The 7th grade team includes a girl from St. Bernadine s in Forest Park. The 6th grade team plays at 6:00 pm and the 7th grade plays at 7:00 pm. The girls also play on Thursday, November 4th at St. Luke s in River Forest. The 6th grade team plays at 6:00 pm and the 7th grade plays at 7:00 pm. Our first home game is Monday, November 8th, against St. Mary s. The 6th grade team plays at 6:00 pm and the 7th grade plays at 7:00 pm. Home games will be played at Divine Providence this season. The students, parents and volunteers appreciate your support. SANTA S COMING TO TOWN Santa will stop by for pictures at Divine Infant on Saturday, November 20th. All are welcome to come see Santa and take a picture with him. Along with pictures with Santa, Christmas shopping for children, plus food and raffle prizes will be available. PRO-LIFE Pro-Life Bake Sale Thank you so much for your support of our annual Pro-Life bake sale last weekend. We were blessed with helpers, bakers and buyers. It was a success thanks to our wonderful Divine Infant parishioners! God bless you for helping us stand up for life. Eighth Annual Chastity Education Initiative. The eighth Annual Chastity Education Initiative Dinner will be held on Saturday, November 21st at Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace reception 4:30 pm; dinner 5:30 pm. The proceeds from this dinner are used by the Respect Office of the Chicago Archdiocese in support of programs that empower teens and young adults to embrace chastity and other healthy decisions. This program was initiated in 2003 and has served more than 130,000 teens and young adults with the chastity message. The keynote address at the dinner will be given by Irish Tenor Dr. Ronan Tynan. He is a founding member of the Irish Tenors, the former voice of Yankee Stadium, a double amputee, paralympic recordholder and equestrian and an orthopedic sports injury physician. Come, hear his inspirational story and great singing voice. Our very special guest will be His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago. VETERANS DAY ASSEMBLY There will be a Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, November 11th, at 1:45 pm in the church. The program will include all of the service flags and a salute to the Armed Forces. This and a few other selections will be played by the Divine Infant s award-winning band. The school children will also sing a few songs in honor of our Veterans. Come, join us to sing and salute our Veterans. The Assembly is open to everyone whether you are a Veteran or not. Come, acknowledge our Veterans and celebrate Veterans Day with us. Area Veterans can come forward after Taps and receive the Remembrance medal. Gold Star Moms and Dads can receive a unique, gold star pin.

7 FIRST AND SECOND GRADERS GET INVOLVED WITH THE MASS As First and Second Grade Students prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion, they and their families are invited to sign up to bring up the gifts during Mass. Over the next few months you will notice participating families sitting in the front of church near the gifts table on their scheduled dates. Enrollment is not dependent on having attended the first session. This is an opportunity to read God s word, pray, study and engage in a small-group discussion. Each participant will have a handbook and a study guide. Leaves swirl in the crisp autumn wind as nature slowly, beautifully declines, fades and prepares to rest in the death of winter. The chill of November has inspired many people and cultures to devote this time of the year to the remembrance of those who have gone before us in death, and the Church does likewise. The autumn triduum of Halloween, All Saints and All Souls invites us to see Death, to face our own mortality and to remember the dead. The Book of Remembrance will be in the vestibule of church the last two weekends of October. Inscribed in this Book are the names of all who have been buried from our parish this past year. We invite you to write the names of other deceased loved ones in this Book. The Book of Remembrance will be carried in procession to the sanctuary on November 7th during the 11:30 am Mass where it will remain until the new liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, November 28th. Please feel free to continue to inscribe the names of the dead in the Book throughout the month of November. Then every time you enter Church, take a moment to notice our Book of Remembrance and to pray for our beloved dead. Mrs. Rita Raysa, WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
