2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Recently, I received in the mail a copy of a letter sent to Len Weigel. Len is our parish business manager and has been an active and involved parishioner since the 1950 s. The letter begins: Dear Leonard, Cardinal George and the Archdiocese of Chicago have established an award, the Christifideles, which is to be given to a layperson in each parish that demonstrates faithfulness and dedication in ministry. I am pleased to inform you that your pastor with the approval of your Episcopal Vicar has chosen you to receive the Christifideles Award. Cardinal George will confer the award at the Archdiocesan Awards ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral, at State and Superior Streets in Chicago, on Sunday, October 17th at 2:30 pm. The letter then goes on to describe a few practical details such as how many guests Len may bring and where they should park, and then it is signed by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, in ink! I am so pleased to see Len receive this award. He is truly an amazing person and a dedicated and generous parishioner. As one of the pioneers of Divine Infant, Len helped grow this parish in its early years. He has been involved in all sorts of ministries from the Holy Name Men's Club to extraordinary minister of communion. Now Len takes care of the day-to-day business of the parish. Thank God, because I am so inept when it comes to money, budgets, and all that practical and necessary stuff. Len takes care of the finances of the parish with ease. Best of all, he always has a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye as he whistles a pleasant tune. Moreover, Len is one of the pillars of St. Joseph High School. Along with our founding pastor Fr. Charles Langan, Len was instrumental in founding St. Joe's and has worked with the school ever since. In fact, this past June the chapel in school was rededicated as the Father Langan and Leonard Weigel Chapel. And all of this at the tender, youthful age of 90! If I even survive to 90, I cannot imagine that I will be doing a fraction of what Len does. He is truly an inspiration to me. Congratulations to you, Len, and to your lovely wife Kathy and your entire family. You are one of the greatest blessings that Divine Infant has been given. Keep up the good work. Keep being an inspiration to me and to so many others. Please keep going for another 90 years! Fr. Michael TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 10, 2010 If we have died with [Christ Jesus] we shall also live with him; if we persevere we shall also reign with him. 2 Timothy 2:11-12a GOD REVEALED TO THE NATIONS Our extended lesson in discipleship continues this weekend with a focus on the centrality of thanksgiving to the Christian life. We hear stories of foreigners who experience the healing, cleansing power of the God of Israel and give the Lord thanks. In today s episode from the book of Kings the prophet Elisha cures a foreigner named Naaman of his leprosy. Naaman returns to thank Elisha and pledges to worship only the God of Israel from that day forward. The Gospel presents the story of the cleansing of ten lepers. It is the Samaritan also a foreigner who returns to give Jesus thanks and give God glory and praise. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power, sings the psalmist. Sing joyfully to the Lord... Sing praise (Psalm 98:2, 4).

3 SCHOOL NEWS Mrs. Shuflit s 3-year pre-school loves their free play time. Their favorite activity is dramatic play. Pictured are Evan Smith as an artist, Alexandra Hernandez as a postal worker, Arthur Kucharzyk as a construction worker, Laila Laws as a teacher, Vivian Zmorzynski as a firefighter, and Gabe Brown as a police officer. The 8th grade science class began studying cells in a new chapter last week. In the beginning of the chapter the students familiarized themselves with microscopes studying small objects. Later in the chapter the students created their own Edible Cells. The cells created were either plant or animal cells made of different ingredients such as cakes, brownies, pasta, and even pizza. As you can see, the students showed their creative side when completing the task. Second graders enjoyed making pizzas on October 8th after reading a most delightful story in their readers called Little Nino s Pizzeria. Thanks to our parent helpers Mrs. Lah, Mr. Romero, Ms. Esposito, and Ms. Cabrol. Everyone had a great afternoon in Langan Hall! Pictured are Pino Esposito, Kayla Caday, and Alexa Zornoza making their individual sized pizzas. Joe Genova peers through the microscope as Carl Robst and Pat McGee write down their findings. Kevin Jackson, Joe Genova and Chris Kulnig show off their Edible Cell.

5 FRESH IDEAS WANTED The Divine Infant Men s Club is looking to expand the number of its board members. Many of us have been involved on the board for over a decade and, while still very much committed to the organization, we welcome new volunteers to our club. The Men s Club has operated as a social organization for over 50 years. The generosity of those attending our functions has blessed us with the ability to raise funds in support of many parish and community efforts. We could list hundreds of donations over the years but some of our more recent activities have raised funds to purchase blinds for Langan Hall, new ciboria for the church, and gym and band equipment for our school children. We also sponsor our local Cub and Boy Scouts as well as boys baseball and girls softball and joined with our local Lions Club to underwrite a parish outing to a local sporting event. We are eager to find more ways to support our Divine Infant family and neighbors especially with new activities and events. If we can raise a few dollars in the process, so much the better. None of this is possible without new members willing to share their creativity, ingenuity, and talent with our organization. If you re concerned that becoming an active board member will not fit into your busy lives, we welcome all of our parishioners to share their ideas with us. Just write us with the types of activities you would like to see at Divine Infant and drop them off at the rectory. You may also feel free to contact Patrick Casey at or by at pcasey@pbrand.com with your ideas or for more information on our club. Thank you. D.I. YOUTH ENSEMBLE NEEDS YOU!!!! If you like to sing or play an instrument we need you for our group!! First rehearsal is Wednesday, October 27th, at 5:15 pm in Church. For information, please call Mrs. Schindler at JOIN ONE OF OUR MUSIC GROUPS Here is an update on joining one of our music groups. The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Advent/ Christmas season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our first rehearsal of the season on Wednesday, October 20th, from 7:15 until 8:30 pm in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that first rehearsal. The DI Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come to us with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the instrument. More information on joining this group will be appearing in The Crown. The Strings of Faith are already in session for the season. They are currently working on their full season schedule. We welcome back our Chimes Ensemble who are already rehearsing and planning for the season. You will see a few new young members who have joined this year. The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. Please visit our Cantor Corner on the DI Web site music tab to learn more about our cantors and their dedication to our parish and the music program. For further information about any of our music groups, please contact Janet Reif at or call the rectory and leave a message for her to contact you. If you were unable to purchase any bracelets, but would like to, please feel free to contact Rosemary at or rcalcag@lumc.edu. Again, thank you for your generosity and kindness. Guy & Rosemary Calcagno BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE The days are shorter and colder. Leaves swirl in the crisp autumn wind as nature slowly, beautifully declines, fades and prepares to rest in the death of winter. The chill of November has inspired many people and cultures to devote this time of the year to the remembrance of those who have gone before us in death, and the Church does likewise. The autumn triduum of Halloween, All Saints and All Souls invites us to see Death, to face our own mortality and to remember the dead. The Book of Remembrance will be in the vestibule of church the last two weekends of October. Inscribed in this Book are the names of all who have been buried from our parish this past year. We invite you to write the names of other deceased loved ones in this Book. The Book of Remembrance will be carried in procession to the sanctuary on November 7th during the 11:30 am Mass where it will remain until the new liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, November 28th. Please feel free to continue to inscribe the names of the dead in the Book throughout the month of November. Then every time you enter Church, take a moment to notice our Book of Remembrance and to pray for our beloved dead. CARD AND BUNCO PARTY St. John Vainney Ladies Guild will hold their annual card and bunco party Turkey in the Straw on Friday, October 29th, beginning at 6:00 pm in the gym at 46 North Wolf Road, Northlake. Admission is $6.00. Many door prizes, raffles, cash grand prize, free dessert and coffee. For more information, please call Helen at Tickets can be purchased at the door. Come, bring your friends!
