3 Pastor s Notes The weather for the last two weeks was not very favorable for the Annual Catholic Appeal. I do hope that, those of you who could not make it to Mass last week because of the weather, will pick up some of the cards and make a pledge to this appeal. The Bishop gave us a grant for $700,000 for last year and this year to keep our school open. I do hope that we can repay him for his generosity. Because of this, our projections for next year could actually put the school in the black with a much smaller subsidy from the parish. We have done so well this year academically that we may be able to get the federal Blue Ribbon Award for academic excellence. Our gratitude to the Annual Catholic Appeal could prevent another school from closing and keeping another parish solvent in the process. I would like to thank all those volunteers who helped clear the church of snow last week. We are getting better at solving the ice problems with better donated equipment and the generous help of people. Last week we also had a pipe burst in the Rainbow Patch area. It looks like insurance will cover it, but it may take a few days to reopen it to the little kids. I am grateful to Msgr. John Farley for leading us in our annual parish mission. I hope and pray that there will be much spiritual fruit for all who attended. Deacon Franey and I have been trying to start up an association of high school students in the parish. On March 22nd there will be a Diocesan Youth Conference. Please encourage your teenagers (Grades 8-12) to go. Deacon Franey can be contacted at deacon.john@stveronica.com by March 5th. Site of Sacrifice of Abraham is believed to be the mosque now called Dome on the Rock in Jerusalem. It is that beautiful golden dome that you see whenever pictures of Jerusalem are shown on TV. In the time of Abraham the Canaanites used to perform human sacrifices to their gods on the hills. This particular hill was never used for this purpose. Abraham had Isaac when he was 100 years old. God promised that Abraham would be the father of many nations, but now the promise of his posterity puts him into confusion and into an insurmountable act of obedience. God demanded that he sacrifice his only son. We call Abraham our Father in Faith. St. Paul tell us that Abraham reasoned that God can raise people from the dead. So, hoping against hope, Abraham followed God s instruction. Why would God make such a demand on Abraham? One Jewish tradition claims that it was the result of a complaint from Satan after Abraham celebrated of the weaning of Isaac. Satan complained to God that God gave the elderly Abraham the gift of his son and Abraham never responded with a sacrifice of even one dove or pigeon to redeem his child (like Mary and Joseph did). Human sacrifice for Satan meant the destruction of the image and likeness of God Whom he hates. God therefore decided to show the Devil that Abraham would offer up his only son, Isaac, out of love for God. Abraham s loyalty to God also brought an end to human sacrifice much to Satan s displeasure. Isaac must surely have sensed the truth as he walked with his father. The request from God was climactic in Abraham s spiritual odyssey. Had Isaac been sacrificed, it would have meant the complete nullification of the covenant of God with Abraham and frustrate forever the hope of his posterity. The fact that the two of them walked together and that Isaac fell completely silent, implies that Isaac also surrendered to God s purpose. Typology is a technical term for symbolism in the Bible. Abraham so loved God that he would give God his only son because he had faith in God and faith demands obedience. The Fathers of the Church call this action a prefiguring of Christ s Passion, God offering His only Begotten Son. Abraham s trial could only be surpassed by the Blessed Virgin Mary who offered her son at the Cross. The Gospel takes us up to another high place, Mt. Tabor. It is here where Jesus shows His divine glory as a mortal. Jesus changes (came from within) temporarily. It will only be through suffering and death that this change will be permanent. He appears with Moses, the Law Maker and Elijah, the Prophet. When Moses climbed Mt. Sinai, he received the Ten Commandments and God made a covenant with His chosen people. The covenant was no longer with an individual, but with peoples. Each individual had an obligation to be faithful to these commands. When Elijah climbed Mt Carmel, he proved that there was only one true God and he deposed Jezabel s false prophets. Jesus, the Savior, the One Who is to come, ascends to ratify the fulfillment of Old Testament with the New Testament. The two Old Testament witnesses, Moses and Elijah, ratify the harmony of ancient laws and prophecy with Gospel. We know from another Gospel account that the very topic of conversation among Jesus, Moses and Elijah was the Passion. We can speculate that Moses and Elijah are in heaven both body and soul, like the Blessed Virgin. Moses body was never found. Elijah s body was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot. Fr. The 40 Days for Life is a prayerful, peaceful witnessing in front of an abortion clinic to help women who are considering getting an abortion. People are being asked to simply stand (or walk) there and say the Rosary or other prayers for one hour. Here in Monmouth County, the site is the Planned Parenthood facility at 69 E. Newman Springs Rd in Shrewsbury. We have been asked to staff each Wednesday of the 40 Days for Life event from Feb 18 to March 29. That is 6 Wednesdays, Feb 18 and 25, March 4, 11, 18, and 25. The hours are 8 AM to 6 PM. The National 40 Days for Life organization has a web site ( where you can obtain much information. Missionaries of the Poor- Haiti Food Drive This Weekend The Missionaries of the Poor in Haiti appreciate your continued generosity in providing food for their residents in their Monasteries at Cap-Haitien and Port-Au-Prince. They are mostly disabled children and elderly, homeless persons and people with HIV/AIDS. Please take a food pledge card and return them on March 7th and 8th with your donation. Food will be purchased at reduced prices by the Lay Associates and shipped on a container to M.O.P. Haiti. However, any donations of stuffed bunnies, jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and other candies to fill the baskets, as well as baskets, cellophane paper and grass will also be greatly appreciated. 5 Trenton Youth Conference To attend the Diocese of Trenton Youth Conference, register with Deacon John Franey, before March 5. Send to and include grade and shirt size (for a t-shirt). Visit this site for information about the conference: Pregnancy Loss Mass March 12th at Holy Cross Chapel, 30 Ward Ave., Rumson, NJ. A liturgy to help those women and families who have lost babies during pregnancy or in their infancy. This would include women and couples who had miscarriages, those who lost infants due to premature births and those who journeyed with their infants through a fatal illness. All are invited to attend to support those women and families who have experienced such a loss, as are members of parish Bereavement teams. For more info, call x1123 or llaplante@holycrossrumson.org PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY UPDATE The Prayer Shawl Ministry began its sixth year with the January 17 meeting. To date over 660 prayer shawls, lap robes, and baby blankets have been donated to organizations and individuals. Over 1000 Pocket Prayer Patches have been sent to our troops and given to the Legion of Mary and individuals who have requested them. Also, hats and scarves have been made for the homeless and organizations that care for preemie babies. Anyone who would like to share their talent of knitting, crocheting, or quilting with people who need comforting is invited to join the ministry. Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month at 2:00 in the narthex. If you know of a person who would appreciate receiving a prayer shawl or any of the other items that the ministry makes or if an organization would like to request specific items, please call Anne at Donations of yarn and religious medals are gratefully accepted. Diocese of Trenton Annulment Information Sessions For many people, the process of marriage annulment is very mysterious, often accompanied by considerable misinformation. In order to dispel misconceptions, the diocese sponsors Annulment Information Sessions annually in parishes within each county of the diocese. Adoption Connections Adoption Connections is a support group for all members of the adoption triad (birth parents, adoptive parents, adoptees) including pre-adoptive parents who are exploring the different pathways to adoption. Attendees can learn more about the adoption process, international vs. domestic, and closed vs. open vs.semi-open options. We also explore issues related to raising children such as answering adoption related questions in an age appropriate way. The group facilitators are adoptive parents. The group meets on the 2nd Friday evening of each month at 7:30pm at St. Benedict Church,165 Bethany Rd, Holmdel, NJ in the Fr. Anderson Library (park behind the church).
