3 Pastor s Notes When I was a college student, just about every wedding I attended had the song, To everything turn, turn, turn etc. The music was very appealing. Recently it became a sentiment for a commercial wine. However, in its true context, it had a much deeper and sobering theme. What do people gain from the efforts they make? Futility! Ecclesiastes, also known as Qoheleth, reminds us that everything in this fallen world is vanity. It sees that we, whether good or bad, die just like the animals and apparently we have nothing to show for it. Despite its gloomy message, the book ends with, To sum up the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, for that is the duty of everyone. For God will call all our deeds to judgement, all that is hidden, be it good or bad. (12:13-14). Qoheleth, the writer of this book, raises an important observation: Why has God given us the ability to reflect? We are aware of time and the shortness of our lives. Qoheleth is part of God s revelation without the benefit of Jesus. But Qoheleth knows of the one true God and this changes his behavior and interests even though he is not aware of the afterlife. In the Gospel Jesus is approached by a man with a material problem. The man is fixated on his share. It could be that his brother is a greedy man or maybe this man is greedy. The Mosaic Law had a complicated system to deal with inheritance. These concerns are of this world and not the Kingdom of God. Jesus takes no interest in the matter and passes it back to him like He did to Martha, but with a teaching. Jesus gives a very pointed parable on temporal matters. The successful farmer really is not doing anything bad on the surface. Wealth in itself is not bad, but what he is doing with it is. He is not focused on the spiritual world and his success is making him very selforiented. He is not looking toward God in thanksgiving or to his neighbor who might be in need. He is a selfmade man. You might say a capitalist with no compassion. There was a very famous American capitalist in the early twentieth century who actually gave ten percent of his earnings to his church, but would not give to charity because he felt it would only enable the poor to remain lazy. He fed into the idea of a superior race to which he belonged and actually funded population control foundations, some of which developed into Planned Parenthood and the death camps controlled by the Nazis. Jesus did not come to abolish all evil here below, but to free us from the gravest slavery which is sin. Sin perverts our vocation as God s children and causes all forms of human bondage. Christians no longer live for themselves, but with Christ. Paul tells us that we have put on Christ when we were baptized and were recreated in the image of God. We should think of higher things and not get stuck on things of this world which will not follow us at death. Paul calls greed a kind of lust because it steers our desires away from God and our neighbors in need. We are destined to live with God, but greed can exclude us from Heaven. Sin is very tricky. We cannot prevent it unless we make a serious commitment to Jesus and His Way. Our life does not have to be miserable and we can transform it by accepting God s mercy so we can get His forgiveness and begin to show mercy to all whom we meet. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." This isn't a message that gets much advertising. On the contrary, just about every advertised message we hear comes from someone who wants to make money by selling us possessions. The message we hear loud and clear on television or Internet ads or on highway billboards or the back cover of magazines is that we need this product or that service in order to be happy. Professional marketers are in the business of creating a supposed need and then promising to fill it with their product. In today's culture, it's hard to remember that life isn't about possessions. But in this Gospel, Jesus reminds us that there is more to life than having "so many good things stored up for many years." All of this stuff-be it clothes, devices, equipment, decorations, entertainment centers, or anything else-does no lasting good if and when "this night your life will be demanded of you." Unlike the fool who spends all of his time, energy, and money building larger barns, we should focus our resources on becoming "rich in what matters to God." This means cultivating virtue instead of vice. It means sharing our money with those in need instead of hoarding it out of selfish greed. The call is a challenging one, and countercultural too. But Jesus never said that the Christian way was the way of the world. As St. Paul instructs us in today's epistle, "Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly." Instead of falling for the marketers' messages, may we have the wisdom to store up our treasure in heaven.

Gathering will include Exposition, Benediction and recitation of the Chaplet of St Michael. As a Church let us intercede as a community for the needs of the church and for our brothers and sisters who are falling "asleep" and away from the church. Scriptures says that "whoever brings back a sinner from his error of his ways will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins." James 5:20. There is power when we stand together, so we hope to see you all there.

5 Ask The Pastor Ask the Pastor is not scheduled for the months of July and August. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 23rd. Bishop s Anniversary Blessings 2016 All couples celebrating their 1st, 25th or 50+ wedding anniversary during the 2016 calendar year are invited to gather with family and friends to share the Eucharist, renew your sacred wedding vows, and receive Bishop O Connell s Episcopal Blessing. Anniversary couples from Ocean and Monmouth Counties may register through their parish to attend the Sunday, October 2, 2016, Mass and Blessing at 3:00 PM at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Freehold.
