3 Consider Joining our Altar Server Ministry St. Veronica Altar Server Ministry provides an opportunity for the young people of our parish to become more involved in the parish in a constructive, helpful and educational way. The altar server ministry is very important. It is a beautiful commitment to our parish community and is an invitation by God. The altar server ministry provides boys and girls with the opportunity to learn more about their faith and to begin to build a foundation of evangelization and stewardship by serving at Mass and other liturgical functions. An altar server is the right hand helper of the priest and deacon at the Mass. This ministry allows young parishioners to grow in the following ways: Serve Christ and the Church Participate in the Liturgy Learn more about the Mass and the Church Be more involved in the parish The Ministry is open to those in Fifth grade and beyond, who have celebrated their First Communion. Altar Server training will be held in September. If you are interested in joining our altar server ministry, please go to our website ( and download the registration form and return it to the rectory office to the attention of Deacon Gino Esposito NJ Natural Gas Energy Assistance Day On October 1, 2014, the federally funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program will begin accepting applications for the heating season. LI- HEAP and the state s Universal Serve Fund (USF) provide benefits to supplement the cost of utility bills for eligible limited-income households. Moreover, NJNG s Gift of Warmth fund along with the state-sponsored Payment Assistance Gas and Electric and NJ SHARES programs provide energy assistance to households that exceed LIHEAP and USF income thresholds but are currently experiencing temporary or unanticipated financial hardship. Howell Thursday, October 2nd 9AM-4Pm Municipal Bldg, 4567 Rte 9 No. Scripture Meditation The Exaltation of the Holy Cross "And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up." The first reading today refers to the story of the Israelites and the serpents. These venomous creatures were biting and killing the people of Israel wandering in the desert. Moses begged God to save them from the affliction. God chose a strange antidote to the poison: he told Moses to mount a bronze serpent on a pole. Those who looked at it survived. In the Gospel reading, John refers to this historical event in the context of salvation. Then, the people of God were saved from physical death by looking up. Now, we are saved from spiritual death in much the same way. Through the cross where Jesus was "lifted up," God has given us an antidote to the poison of sin. The habits of selfishness that threaten to suffocate our souls can be overcome when we raise our eyes to this cross upon which Christ made the ultimate act of selflessness. Today at Mass, many of us will sing the rousing hymn "Lift High the Cross" and call to mind this "triumphant sign" that has come to be equivalent with Christianity itself. The cross is our symbol, our banner, and our hope. As Christians, we march behind it with confidence and courage because through it, even the most fearsome of all human realities-sin and death-have been conquered. Now we can enjoy the gift of eternal life. But, like the children of Israel wandering in the desert, we have to participate in our own salvation. God desired that they actively "look" at the bronze seraph instead of passively being cured. So too, we must choose to actively embrace the cross of Christ by modeling our lives after the generous, life-giving love of the Lord.

Life Chain Sunday, October 5 The 24 th Annual LIFE CHAIN will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 PM on Sunday, October 5, in front of St. Veronica s Rectory. LIFE CHAIN is an annual nation-wide event of peaceful and prayerful public witness against abortion and for greater respect for all human life. Pro-life witnesses will be forming a Life Chain along Rt. 9 in front of the St. Veronica s Rectory. Signs which state Abortion Kills Children, Jesus Forgives and Heals, etc. will be available. 5 Legion of Mary Corner: We would like to thank everyone who participated at the Procession, Rosary and Fellowship for Mother Mary's Birthday, on Sunday, Sept 7, 6:30 pm. We also are grateful to everyone who contributed religious items for the Summer Outreach at Howell Day, Saturday, Aug 23, 4:00 to 8:00pm. Safely Dispose of Your Unused Medications If you have any unused or unwanted prescription medication in your home and would like to safely get rid of it, there will be envelopes to dispose of them in the back of the church. Some of the most well known opiates are morphine, codeine, OxyContin, OxyCodone, Vicodin, Methatdone and Percocet. After you seal the envelopes, you can bring them to the Howell Twp Municipal Bldg, 4567 Rte 9 No, Howell, on September 27th between 10AM and 2PM, or to the Police Headquarters anytime. Events Committee Needs Members Please consider joining our Events Committee team. We focus on both fundraising and parish functions that can bring us all together as a community. We have organized things such as our Mega 50/50, Pasta Dinner, St. Patrick s Day celebration, and Ipad Santa s secret raffle. We would like to make even more plans for next year, but we will need more hands to do so. We generally meet once every other month. Please consider joining this very worthwhile committee. If you are interested please call Cheryl at the rectory Public Square Rosary Crusade America is at a historic crossroad. Secularists are trying to push God from the public square. They reject His beneficial action upon society. We must stop the secularist advance and pray to God for help. He will hear us, if we pray through the intercession His Blessed Mother. That s why we re launching the 2014 Public Square Rosary Crusade. Please join us as we recite the rosary on October 11th at 12 noon at 30 North Longview Rd. Howell. You may do so at the Rectory Office during the week or on Saturdays. Envelopes-Using Parish envelopes or direct donate helps us to maintain up-to-date records of those actively attending and supporting our church. Baptism-Baptisms are held every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sunday at 1:45pm in the church. Please call the Rectory in advance of the baby s birth to schedule and make arrangements. Parents are required to be registered parishioners. RCIA-Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, for those inquiring about the Catholic faith and practice, or for adult Catholics who have not been confirmed. Marriages-Please call to make arrangements at least one year in advance, and before scheduling your other wedding arrangements.
