3 Pastor s Notes In 1925 Pius XI instituted the Solemnity of Christ the King in response to growing secularism, atheism and anti- Church mentality. This feast affirms that Jesus rules over persons, families, society, the State and the whole universe. This feast parallels the Ascension where Jesus is exalted to the right hand of the Father. The title and power of King belong to Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Jesus has supreme and absolute dominion over all created things. While this may look now like these attributes are non-existent, especially with 90 million people being displaced from their homes mostly because of religious persecution, there will be a time when Jesus will return to make a final judgement of the living and the dead on how we used our divine attribute of free will. Tomorrow we will observe the 88th anniversary of the execution of a 36 year old Jesuit priest in Mexico by a firing squad. His crime was simply being a Catholic priest. He refused a blindfold and, as he was about to be shot, he stretched out his arms in the form of a cross, with a rosary in his left hand and a cross in his right. His last words were, Long live Christ the King! Fr. Miguel Pro was beatified in 1988 by St. John Paul II. Some of our parishioners may be old enough to recall this event. While it seems hard to believe that this went on in our neighboring country, it is also a stark reminder of what is happening in our own country. Here instead of executions, we have lawyers silencing us and making laws against nature that continue to move our population into acts of depravity. Jesus warns us not to fear those who can only kill the body, but rather to fear those who can kill the soul. Next week begins the season of Advent where we will again be reminded of the final judgement. With the Paris attacks in mind, Satan has used current technologies to enable the killing of hundreds of people at once. It can happen again here in America. Years ago there was a commercial about the Internet where a child asked us, Are you ready? Are you certain that your soul is ready to survive a terrorist attack? Do you remember how full the churches were after 9/11? Have you noticed how empty the churches are now? We call upon God when we are up the creek without a paddle, but it is not really a call from the soul, but rather an instinct for preservation of a body that will someday perish anyway. We are entering a Year of Mercy. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is quite available here at St. Veronica s. Mercy does not come from God unless we say you are sorry and ask God for forgiveness. God will only forgive sins of those who say they are sorry and beg for forgiveness. Are you ready? The reading from the Book of Daniel is taken from his dream of the four beasts. It parallels chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation. Both these sections comment on political leaders of their respective times. In Daniel, the devil is delegating power to evil leaders or evil empires. Today s reading describes one like a Son of man who receives dominion and glory from the Ancient One. Jesus uses this term to describe Himself, the Son of Man. Revelation tells us that when Jesus returns, even those who killed Him will be astonished at His coming in grandeur. Those who put their faith in Jesus and followed Him will live in confidence. Those who rejected His love and mercy will begin or return to suffering. The Gospel reveals that the Kingship of Jesus is not one of a political system, "My Kingdom is not of this world." Jesus did not come to dominate peoples and territories, but to free us from the slavery of sin and be reconciled with God. His kingdom does not use coercion, nor is it imposed, but built on love, justice and peace. This kingdom is God's final aim and purpose in everything. It is mysteriously already present. What is this kingship? "The reason I was born, the reason why I came into the world is to testify to the truth." His is a kingship of ultimate service, even to the point of laying down His life for others. Jesus' kingship excludes violence. Jesus' kingship is open to every repentant sinner and He promises them resurrection and everlasting life. The Virgin Mary is associated in a very special way to Christ's royalty. God asked her, the humble maiden of Nazareth, to become the Mother of the Messiah. Mary responded to this call with her whole being, uniting her unconditional "yes" to that of her Son, Jesus, becoming with Him obedient to the foot of the Cross. Because of this, God exalted her above all creatures and Christ crowned her Queen of Heaven and Earth. We entrust the Church and the whole of humanity to her intercession, so that the love of God might reign in all hearts and His plan of justice and peace be fulfilled. Are you ready? Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." Once they wear the crown, earthly kings don't have to win the allegiance of their subjects; if you live in the kingdom, you're part of the kingdom and are under the authority of the king. But things are different with Jesus. As the Lord told Pilate, "My kingdom does not belong to this world." His subjects are not given by default. His kingdom is not established in a particular place or even in a particular time. Rather, the realm of the King of the universe encompasses all the other kingdoms of the world. And everyone, regardless of any earthly allegiance, is invited to be the privileged subject of this King. The key to entering this kingdom, as Jesus says, is to listen to his voice. Heeding the voice--the teachings, the guidance, the commandments--of Jesus enables us to belong to this kingdom that is founded upon truth. Jesus defines his authority in these terms: "For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth." As Christians, we profess to follow the King of kings. Therefore, as members of his royal realm, we too should be about the business of testifying to the truth. Of course there are many ways to defend the truth in our modern age. Upholding the dignity of life and protecting religious liberty are two examples of the pressing issues of our day. But even more fundamental is the basic claim we make: that Jesus is in fact God-made-man and that, through his death and resurrection, he has saved us from our sins.

Winter Overnight Shelter Program St. Veronica's is once more opening its rectory to the homeless, every Monday night, starting Monday, December 7th continuing through March 28th. This is part of the Freehold Clergy Association's Winter Overnight Shelter Program. If you would like to prepare meals for our guests, as well as be a chaperone or a driver, please sign up at the narthex this weekend. Or you can contact Vic Lagdameo at St. Veronica Christmas Carol Festival Our Christmas Festival is approaching. All are invited to join our Christmas Carol Festival in the gym on December 5, 2015, at 7PM. It will be a fun evening of caroling and gathering together with friends and family. Refreshments will be served. This is a free event. We encourage anyone to bake their favorite cookies and bring them to the Christmas Festival for everyone to enjoy. Giving Tree This Weekend Once again our parish will be preparing a Giving Tree to help make Christmas a little brighter for those who find themselves in need during this holiday season. Beginning Saturday, November 21st, our Giving Tree will be in the narthex of the Church. The giving tree is decorated with paper ornaments. Each tag contains information about the gift recipient as well as a gift request. The cost of the gifts varies from a few dollars to perhaps the cost of a coat. When you select an ornament from the tree, please consider purchasing the requested gift. If you are unable to locate the gift that was requested, please substitute a comparable item in its place. TAPE THE PAPER ORNAMENT TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE PACK- AGE. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE ORNAMENT BE ATTACHED TO THE GIFT AS THIS IS THE ONLY METHOD WE HAVE FOR DISTRIBUTING THE GIFTS TO THE PROPER INDIVIDUAL. March for Life Washington, DC January 22, 2016 This year, we are joining St. Robert Bellarmine s bus to go down to the March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Friday, January 22, Cost is $10.00 per person. We will arrange car pools from St. Veronica s to St. Robert s for the morning of Jan 22, or provide directions to the Church.
