3 Pastor s Notes Malachi means my messenger. It may be a pseudoname because the author is critical of the ruling class and therefore may have not wanted his identity known. God is condemning the Levitical priests for offering blemished (cheap) sacrifices and providing poor leadership to His people. (You may want to look at the Catholic Revised Standard Version to see how blunt God is. This translation is rather tame.) God also points out a trend among corrupt clergy because it infiltrates into the faithful to do the same. Many translations of the Bible call this God s anger. Perhaps, in view of the Cross, it would be better to say God s justified indignation. One commentator summarizes this section of Malachi s scroll by saying, The Lord s love for His people is shown by current events. In the Sunday Gospels for the last few weeks we see the Sadducees, the Pharisees and the Herodians, all enemies of each other, uniting for the evil purpose to entrap Jesus. The Scribes never depart from the letter of the Law. They are sola scriptura. The Pharisees generally separate themselves from the vulgar people and see themselves as above them. The Herodians are simply opportunists and are willing to deal with the devil if it is to their advantage. Jesus now presents to the people His opinion. Sitting at the Seat of Moses does not make the priest honorable, but rather the priest, who honestly conveys his authority, becomes honorable in the eyes of God. A wicked priest derives guilt and not honor from his priesthood. It is necessary to understand the spirituality of the Law. That is why we read reflective Scriptures about the joy of contemplating the Law because they point out the infinite depths of God s wisdom behind it. It is not just a matter of following the Law. It is a matter of absorbing oneself into the Love of God to spontaneously follow the Law out of love of God and love of neighbor. The reason why the clergy of Jesus time would not accept Him was because all the rituals they did were done for show. It lost its spiritual power to shepherd their flock because they could not comprehend the heavenly reality behind them. They were content to be seen as Doctors of the Law which made them spiritually sterile. In wearing the phylacteries they would keep the Ten Commandments visible, but invisible to their hearts. They had the books in their heads, but not in their hearts. The lesson for us is to realize that the Gospel must be understood both in its words and also in its spiritual meaning. outside the womb, God co-creates with that child creating an immortal soul. We can provide the biological material, but we cannot provide the soul. This distinction is often disregarded, especially now that people can fabricate babies in the laboratory. (This process has been condemned by the Church.) To date no one has ever created a human being from scratch. They have to use living components that have been naturally produced. In the material life, we use the word father to denote a kind of respect for an elderly person or one who has generated children in the natural act. In these instances, this is not an abuse of terms because it is the intention behind the word. After all, how many times has the title father been used in the Bible referring to a human being? Sexual reproduction in Marriage is a human way of imitating the Love within the Holy Trinity. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation Whoever Humbles Oneself Will Be Exalted Who doesn't desire the praise and respect of others? We want others to see us at our best with all of our strengths and achievements - rather than at our worst with all of our faults and shortcomings. God sees us as we truly are - sinners and beggars always in need of his mercy, help, and guidance. Misguided Zeal And Pride Jesus warned the scribes and Pharisees, the teachers and rulers of Israel, to teach and serve their people with humility and sincerity rather than with pride and selfseeking privileges and honor. They went to great lengths to draw attention to their religious status and practices. In a way they wanted to be good models of observant Jews. "See how well we observe all the ritual rules and regulations of our religion!" In their misguided zeal for religion they sought recognition and honor for themselves rather than for God. They made the practice of their faith a burden rather than a joy for the people they were supposed to serve. True respect for God inclines us to humble ourselves and to submit to His wisdom and guidance. We cannot be taught by God unless we first learn to listen to His word and then obey His instruction. Every so often, I come across a person who will not call me Father because of this passage. They generally are Protestants. Behind this word is a wonderful reality. We do speak of fathering a child. What we sometimes forget is that when a child is conceived, in the womb or

Consider Joining our Altar Server Ministry St. Veronica Altar Server Ministry provides an opportunity for the young people of our parish to become more involved in the parish in a constructive, helpful and educational way. The altar server ministry is a very important and beautiful commitment to our parish community and is an invitation by God. The altar server ministry provides boys and girls with the opportunity to learn more about their faith and to begin to build a foundation of evangelization and stewardship by serving at Mass and other liturgical functions. An altar server is the right hand helper of the Priest and Deacon at the Mass. The ministry is open to those in Fourth Grade and beyond, who have celebrated their First Communion.
