3 Pastor s Notes The Midnight Mass reading from Isaiah speaks of the great light shining on the people who have been living in the darkness of this sinful world. I remember coming back from my first ordination to the priesthood at St. Patrick s Cathedral. I was new to the seminary and my next-door neighbor had become a priest. I was walking down the seminary hall as he was coming out of his room. He had a glow about himself as if light was coming out of his eyes. It was like a holiness and a joy because he had been so close to the Lord. It reminded me of the glow that came from Moses face whenever he met the Lord. I never really noticed this glow in any person since that time. Yet, I also remember that every time I attended an ordination as a layman, I could sense a light within the incense floating up to the ceiling of the cathedral, but once I myself was ordained, I never saw that light again. It made me dwell on religious experiences. Do religious experiences just wear off or do we just get used to them so they are never noticed? Today we celebrate the great feast of Christmas. Behind this joyful and festal time lies an incomprehensible history, the fact that God has become man. Many of us do not ponder this mystery, but it is one of those mysteries that will never fully understand. Some religious leaders call God becoming a man blasphemy. But the truth behind it shows us that God is extremely humble. The gospel foretells the future of this God-Man who will eventually die to save us from our sins. He did not die as God, but He died as a man. Yet, He has never really left us. The gospel tells us that Jesus was laid in a stone manger because in Bethlehem, the town of bread, wood was very scarce. This poetic construction reminds us of Jesus being laid in the tomb also wrapped in a swaddling burial cloth. In a sense we can say that Jesus, the Bread of Life, who once laid in the manger, where animals once ate, now feeds us with the Bread of Life, the Holy Eucharist. To those who have faith Jesus is still present to us in all the tabernacles of the world. His Passion, Death and Resurrection give us hope. Our sufferings can become meaningful if we unite them to Jesus dying on the Cross. He promises us a resurrection to Eternal Life if we follow His ways and imitate His life. The presence of our children and their parents each Sunday gives us hope that one day these children will take on a life of holiness. We hope, as they cultivate virtue, great things will happen not only to them but to us. Many political promises have been made to us giving us hope, but they will only come to fruition if the future generations maintain this virtue. Little children can easily become very sensitive to the presence of God because they are not yet weighed down by the distractions and sinfulness that come as we grow older. It is my hope that in experiencing their closeness to God we, who are older, can also sense our need to experience God. I hope we can recognize also the necessity of the Church of Jesus Christ. If it was not for that, we would be left to the mercy of our own imaginations. It is only through the Catholic Church that we can get a clear picture, or should we say a light, of what God wants us to know about Him and ourselves. May this Christmas be like no other. May we have many more Christmases like it until we are called to Eternal Life. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has extended my mandate as a Missionary of Mercy. I hope that this will benefit you, especially when this Lent comes. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation The Nativity of the Lord She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Today we celebrate that the prophetic dream of St. Joseph was fulfilled! Jesus is born! A Savior has come to deliver us-- Emmanuel, God is with us. Christmas is a feast of fulfillment, a holiday of deep and enduring happiness not only because God became man and was born of a woman, but because along with his Incarnation, God brought us freedom. Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah who sets us free from the misery of our own sins. This is the ultimate gift of Christmas Day. We exchange gifts today as a sign of our love for one another to be sure, but also as a concrete, visible way to celebrate the gift that we have first received from God. We are free people! We are not slaves but rather the children of God whose priceless inheritance is to dwell in his kingdom for all eternity. On this most festive day of the year, we are invited to exult in this fact and spare little effort or expense to show our gratitude and joy. We only must be careful not to reduce our celebrating today to something less glorious, something less meaningful, or less profound. This is no mere secular holiday. This is not just a ritual of family gatherings, elaborate evergreen trees and sumptuous meals. Christmas is a holy day and as Christians it is our day in a most definite and undeniable way. The treats and trimmings are all signs that remind us of what lies ahead for those who accept the real gift of Jesus Christ: an unending banquet of eternal delights and divine gifts that will never fail to satisfy. Yes, Christmas is a little taste of heaven, the perfect gift that lies in wait for those who love the Lord. Please Note: The Rectory Office will be closed on Monday, December 26th.
