3 Pastor s Notes Jeremiah is directed by God to tell the people in exile that those who remained faithful to God will be gathered and returned home to Jerusalem. Of course, for us Christians, we see a much bigger picture, a return to heaven. The remnant consists of the lame, the blind and mothers without husbands, not the kind of people you would expect by worldly standards. These are the people God looks after because they know how dependent they are upon God and they trust Him. In the Gospel, Bartimaeus calls to Jesus for help, but the people rebuke him. He, being blind, bears some sigma which the normal people find distasteful. Bartimaeus is not really blind. He is only sightless. He sees better with his heart than many of those around him because he has faith in Jesus and perceives Jesus as the Son of David. He cherishes the hope that his faith gives him. Jesus says, Go your way. Your faith has saved you. Once Jesus cures him, Bartimaeus follows Jesus. The Letter to the Hebrews addresses priesthood. The priesthood of Jesus Christ is the way to holiness. The Church teaches that there are two kinds of priesthood, the common and the ministerial. They are ordained for each other and they both share in the one priesthood of Jesus Christ. The common royal priesthood is symbolized by anointing with chrism at Baptism and Confirmation. It is exercised by receiving the sacraments worthily, in prayer, thanksgiving, in witness of holy lives, in self-denial and active charity. Ministerial priesthood, in addition to the common priesthood, instructs and rules the priestly people. The ordained priest acts in the person of Christ by offering the Eucharistic sacrifice in the name of the people. Many people resent Christ s use of men as intermediaries, especially the confessing of sins to a priest or a bishop. Confession of sins is not new. John the Baptist was listening to sinners confess their sins at the Jordan. Jesus said, Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven. How can one know what to forgive sins in the name of Jesus when he does not know what they are? This is why sins must be confessed to a priest or bishop and why God has chosen to use human beings in this capacity. This is part of the Faith of the Roman Catholic Church. It makes us different from most other Christian faiths. Its practice gives a firm experience of being forgiven by God. No mortal sin can be forgiven outside of the Sacrament of Penance, unless one is actively pursuing the reception of the sacrament and is prevented from doing so. Let us recall our sins at the beginning of Mass is a time to see if our reception of Holy Communion will cause us to commit the sin of sacrilege. Receiving Holy Communion with an unconfessed mortal sin inflicts another mortal sin on our souls. This penitential rite does not forgive mortal sins. It only serves as a warning to remind us of the danger of sacrilege. A close friend of mine was a missionary in Africa. He and a few other priests traveled hours through the bush to hear confessions. When 5,000 people showed up, they had to stop hearing confessions after many hours to return to their duties. They decided to give general absolution. A riot almost broke out because the people would not accept general absolution. They wanted individual confession, but the circumstances would not allow for it. What confidence these people had in God s forgiveness through a priest! Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more." The blind Bartimaeus was a courageous fellow. Not only was he bold enough to call out to Jesus who was passing by, but he also had the guts to keep on calling, even when people were telling him to be quiet. Clearly, this man knew that he needed Jesus--and he wasn't about to let popular opinion convince him otherwise. What were those people thinking who tried to silence the poor beggar? Perhaps they thought that Jesus was too busy for a stop along the way. Maybe they bought into the prevalent idea that Bartimaeus' blindness was a punishment for sin and that he was therefore a lost cause. Or it could be that they were just annoyed by his persistence. Whatever the case, these folks tried to pressure Bartimaeus into giving up. But he didn't. And the reward for his steadfastness was priceless: "Immediately he received his sight." Immediately, that is, after he encountered Christ. But let's not forget that he had to invest all that time and energy earlier in order to arrive at that precious encounter. And we may have to do the same. Our persistence in prayer is often a necessary first step to the gift of God's intervention in our lives. We, like Bartimaeus, may have to call out time and time again, making our requests known to Jesus even when it may seem he isn't looking our way. We too may need to be faithful in the face of doubters and detractors who tell us that our prayers are pointless, that God doesn't really care, or that we deserve to be stuck in our own misery. Let us seek to be like this man who heard Jesus say, "Your faith has saved you."

The actual altar, which has a marble top, was made by Mr. Scotto, master carpenter, so that it can be more functional for sacramental use. He also made a new ambo which should allow greater visibility in the sanctuary. The old altar and ambo, which was donated by the Lipari family has moved to the gym and will be used for the overflow Masses during Easter, Christmas and other occasions. Eventually a new tabernacle will be placed in the sanctuary. I am deeply grateful to the Scotto and Lipari families for their kind contributions to our parish. Fr.
