3 Pastor s Notes In today s gospel Jesus begins to reveal to the crowds that He is the Bread of Life. This is the start of a teaching which will cause many of His followers to turn away from Him. The Twelve, completely speechless, still stay loyal to Him. We do teach that the consecrated bread is the Body of Christ and the consecrated wine is the Blood of Christ. It is a reality that can only be perceived by faith. Even at the Last Supper, when Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist, they were spared from the gruesome reality of what was to happen the following day. Today, we too are spared from this. However, by faith, we truly believe that when we receive Holy Communion, we do receive the Body and Blood of Christ through these sacramental signs. Since God does not belong to time, but rather He created time for us, we also know by faith that when we attend Mass we become present to the actual Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. I do not think that Jesus is attempting to present a morbid picture to us because He has veiled that gruesome reality from us by using sacramental signs. However, we can be certain that His main motive is to show that the Father so loves us that He has given us His only Son even to the point where He has died a terrible death to save us from our sins. God still respects our divine attribute of free will and we can choose to accept His salvation or reject it. If we could only ask God to help us to understand His love for us, we could appreciate on a much deeper level how His Son s sufferings were made meaningful to us and how our sufferings can be made meaningful to ourselves and those whom we love. Yes, it is easy for us to love those whom we see. What mother would not be filled with sorrow to find her child shot to death in a movie theater? But can she say, Father, forgive them like Jesus Who died loving those who were killing Him as He tried to save them from their evil acts. Recently, you may have heard of the selling of fetal body parts by Planned Parenthood. The sin of abortion is brutal enough, but in the callousness of killing so many unborn babies, especially when they have taken on the appearance of a child, can tempt one to think, why waste them? I cannot help to recall how the Nazis made lamp shades out of human skin. These logical choices violate the same ethical principles. But why are we so blinded by this insensitivity? I find it odd that we have developed a Federal law called a hate crime. If you do harm to an individual, isn t that a form of hate? Isn t this understood? Have the courts found a way to measure the inner souls of criminals? To follow that logic, isn t greed a hate crime too? What we are missing in our thinking is an understanding of the transcendent nature of man who is made in the image and likeness of God. Every time we hate, we hate what God loves. Every time we hate we forget that we too are sinners. As Jesus begins to tell us to eat His Flesh and drink His Blood, are we appreciating His and our transcendent natures? Do we realize how important the Mass is to our lives and the warnings from the Apostles to receive it worthily? Sacramental signs instituted by Christ to give grace came at a price of the Father handing over His Son to give us an opportunity to be saved from our sinful nature. If we cannot respect God by attending Sunday Mass, can we expect us to respect the lives of the people around us? You see ISIS, shooting people, etc. are more a reflection of the importance of being religious and to be religious in charity and truth. Pope Francis said that if we did not have the Church, we would be left to the mercy of our imaginations. Many of us Catholics are making up our own rules. They may be under the guise of charity, but they are simply not under the reality of the truth and we are bearing the consequences. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "So they said to him, 'What can we do to accomplish the works of God?' Jesus answered and said to them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.'" These fledgling believers came to Jesus seeking direction. They had witnessed his miracles, heard his teachings, and been miraculously fed by his hands. Now they wanted to know what they should do. How should they respond to the revelations they were beholding? Most of us would expect an "active" answer to a question like theirs. We tend to think of God's work as things like the corporal works of mercy--feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless--or the spiritual works of mercy--instructing the ignorant, comforting the afflicted, and so on. But Jesus gives a surprising answer. Instead of focusing on these external tasks, he tells the crowd that God's work is to believe in him. They should accept the gift God gave: the Son. This, apparently, is the appropriate starting point for doing God's work. And really, it makes sense. If we move too quickly into doing external actions, we risk not having enough interior strength behind them. Feeding the hungry is always good, but feeding the hungry as an expression of our love for Jesus is going to enable us to feed them with more compassion, more generosity, and more long-term commitment. When faith in Jesus is foremost in our lives, then the other important tasks that are all part of God's work will fall into place. If we love Jesus, we will naturally want to love his people. So let us examine the good works that we do and be sure that they have as their starting point a deep and abiding faith in the Son of God.
