3 Pastor s Notes The setting for the first reading is the Babylonian captivity. Zachariah is giving his people hope that the messiah will vindicate them. They will be the recipients of God s saving justice and His powerful protection. But the messiah will not come like a victorious warrior with a complete and impressive array on a white horse, but humbly and peacefully riding in on the foal of an ass like King David. This is not the kind of liberation that is expected. And it will happen when Jesus fulfills this prophecy by riding on a donkey into Jerusalem, soon to be killed to atonement for our sins. Through His death all peoples of good will can look forward in hope to be part of His peaceful kingdom which will be comprised of humble people and not like those political leaders who give us so much grief with their empty and even sinful promises. In the Gospel passage, Jesus addresses God in His divine nature, I thank You Father and His human nature, Lord of heaven and earth. This acknowledgment of the dual nature of the Son of God is very important for us to understand. Jesus is both God and man. Jesus finds His ministry largely rejected by the wise and learned, but not by the simple man. His Apostles and the little people understand the simplistic message of salvation while the Pharisees and the scribes ignore Him because they are of the world and not the Spirit. It is only the poor and the humble who get the insights that lead them into a deeper faith. Only these humble people have access to the Father through the Son. Jesus reveals Himself as the person of Wisdom found in the books of Proverbs and Wisdom. He chooses what to reveal of Himself based on the humility of His followers. It is only the poor and the repentant sinners who are miraculously understanding Jesus. Rabbis used the term "yoke" as a symbol of the Mosaic Law. The law does not punish the willingness to sin. It merely punishes the actual forbidden act, e.g., adultery, murder, etc.. Jesus presents His law where He is now the center of His law the Beatitudes. Jesus law comes from assimilating and living Jesus' attitudes of love. In Jesus the Wisdom of God, the teacher and the subject taught, are one and the same. In other words, if a virgin is forced into prostitution by human trafficking, under the Gospel she is received as a virgin, since she does not sin willingly. Under the Law, she would be reputed as one who has been corrupted. Keeping Jesus' law is a yoke that proves to be very light to the true disciple. Learn of Me to be humble of heart. Jesus calls us to His school, not to be learned, work miracles, nor astonish the world with wonder. He calls us to imitate His humility. All the treasures of Divine Wisdom are reduced to the virtue of humility. Jesus never said, Learn from Me because I am chaste, prudent, just, wise, etc.. He said Learn from Me, because I am meek and humble of heart. The one, who possesses the virtue of humility, possesses all virtues. Humility is understood by two serious questions: Who is God? Who am I? When these questions are taken separately they cause great psychological disharmony. God s greatness alone implies a mercifulness leading us to presumption and rashness. Our littleness and sinfulness causes us despair. But taken together a balance of the knowledge of God and creature puts in check presumption and despair. St. Paul shows us the importance of being in the Spirit. We should ask ourselves, Are we in the Spirit? It is a very important question. The bright Pharisees and the learned scribes were not in the Spirit because Jesus did not package His message the way they wanted. I hope your visit to church today is not just a routine, but an experience of being a temple of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation Do you want to know the mind and heart of God? Jesus thanks the Father in heaven for revealing to his followers the wisdom and knowledge of God. What does Jesus' prayer tell us about God and about our relationship with him? First, it tells us that God is both Father and Lord of the earth as well as heaven. He is both the Creator and Author of all that he has made, the first origin of everything. His authority, wisdom, and gracious care extends to every living thing, and his boundless love and goodness is directed to the welfare of each person made in his image and likeness. He is the source of all human life. That is why all fatherhood and motherhood is ultimately derived from him (Ephesians 3:14-15). Envelopes-Using Parish envelopes or Parish Pay (electronic giving) helps us to maintain up-to-date records of those actively attending and supporting our church. Baptism-Baptisms are held every 2nd, and 4th Sunday at 1:30PM in the church. Please call the Rectory in advance of the baby s birth to schedule and make arrangements. Parents are required to be registered parishioners. RCIA-Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, for those inquiring about the Catholic faith and practice, or for adult Catholics who have not been confirmed.
