3 Pastor s Notes In 1925 Pius XI instituted the Solemnity of Christ the King in response to menaces of the secularism, atheism and anti-catholicism. This feast affirms that Jesus rules over persons, families, society, the state and the whole universe. This feast parallels the Ascension where Jesus is exalted to the right hand of the Father. The title and power of King belong to Jesus Christ, the second Person of Blessed Trinity. Jesus has supreme and absolute dominion over all created things. While this may look now like these attributes are non-existent, there will be a time when Jesus will return to make a final judgement of the living and the dead on how we used our divine attribute of free will. This Tuesday will be the 91st anniversary of the execution of a 36 year old Jesuit priest in Mexico by a firing squad. His crime was simply being a Catholic priest. He refused a blind fold and, as he was about to be shot, he stretched out his arms in the form of a cross, with a rosary in his left hand and a cross in his right. His last words were, Long live Christ the King! Fr. Miguel Pro was beatified in 1988 by St. John Paul II. While it seems hard to believe that this went on in our neighboring country, it is also a stark reminder of what is happening in our own country. Here instead of executions, we have lawyers silencing us and making laws against nature that continue to move our population into acts of depravity. Jesus warns us not to fear those who can only kill the body, but rather to fear those who can kill the soul. Next week begins the season of Advent where we will again be reminded of the final judgement. Years ago there was a commercial about the Internet where a child asked us, Are you ready? Is your soul ready? Many of us call upon God when we are up the creek without a paddle, but it is not really a call from the soul, but rather an instinct for preservation of a body that will someday perish. When we die, we die in the condition that our soul is in. It will ultimately be destined to one of two places, Heaven or hell. God desires us to be in Heaven with Him, but to enter Heaven requires our loving Him by following His commandments, not ours. The reading from the Book of Daniel is taken from his dream of the four beasts. It parallels chapter 13 of the Book of Revelation. Both these sections comment on political leaders of their respective times. In Daniel, the devil is delegating power to evil leaders or evil empires. Today s reading describes one like a son of man who receives dominion and glory from the Ancient One. Jesus uses this term, Son of Man, to describe Himself. Revelation tells us that when Jesus returns, even those who killed Him will be astonished at His coming in grandeur. Those who put their faith in Jesus and followed Him will live in confidence. Those who rejected His love and mercy will begin or return to suffering. The Gospel reveals that the Kingship of Jesus is not one of a political system, "My Kingdom is not of this world." Jesus did not come to dominate peoples and territories, but to free us from the slavery of sin and be reconciled with God. His kingdom does not use coercion, nor is it imposed, but built on love, justice and peace. This kingdom is God's final aim and purpose in everything. It is mysteriously already present. What is this kingship? "The reason I was born, the reason why I came into the world is to testify to the truth." His is a kingship of ultimate service, even to the point of laying down His life for others. Jesus' kingship excludes violence. Jesus' kingship is open to every repentant sinner and He promises them resurrection and everlasting life. The Virgin Mary is associated in a very special way to Christ's royalty. God asked her, the humble maiden of Nazareth, to become the Mother of the Messiah. Mary responded to this call with her whole being, uniting her unconditional "yes" to that of her Son, Jesus, accompanying Him even to the foot of the Cross. Because of this, God exalted her above all creatures and Christ crowned her Queen of Heaven and earth. We entrust the Church and the whole of humanity to her intercession, so that the love of God might reign in all hearts and His plan of justice and peace be fulfilled. Air Conditioner Replacement Campaign Goal- 200, Donations (Current) 105, Balance: 94, As of May 5, 2018, there will be a second collection on each Sunday that there is no Diocesan collection. This special second collection will be earmarked for our needed air conditioning system in the Church.
