3 Pastor s Notes The last two Sundays have disoriented us, in a way, from the theme of the last four weeks in Ordinary Time, death judgment, heaven and hell. All Souls Day, slightly related, did make us think about the dead and particularly those suffering in purgatory. Remember that purgatory will not exist at the end of time. Last Sunday we honored the dedication of the Lateran, the Mother Church for all Catholics throughout the world. Now we return to the intended theme. The Book of Proverbs (31:10, 19-20, 30-31) ends with a beautiful epilogue on the perfect wife. Pope John Paul referred to this passage in his theology of the woman. He reminded us that the woman is entrusted by God to take care of her children despite whatever evils might prevail against her in her vocation as a mother. We are fortunate not to be in a war torn country, but we still do have many challenges to motherhood. The passage is filled with deeper meaning pointing to how much we need to be grateful to women. Their most important role is holding their families together and sometimes even nations. This poem is put together so that each verse begins with a Hebrew letter in alphabetical order. It is a comforting way of ending the Book of Proverbs. The Gospel expresses the effort and need to respond to grace given by God. This effort requires making us put these gifts of grace to good use, especially in the building up of the Body of Christ. What really matters is that we be generous in using them or else we will lose them. Today a friend of mine, Bill Meehan, will give a talk on tithing. This is an important appeal because our parish is not sustaining itself with what we are currently receiving in the collection. Tithing is also a spiritual way of Christian live.. The sacrifices we make reflects our dedication to God. Money will always be an issue and I hope that more and more of you will be able to help sustain us by your generous contributions to our weekly collection. In about five years, we are going to have a dramatic drop in priests from retirement. It is my hope that St. Veronica s will still be a bellwether for the Diocese of Trenton, but we must make our parish financially sound to do this. Since I have come here, most of the changes that you have seen in the church and its environs did not cost us anything. We have a cleaning service that has saved us about $50,000 each year. The larger changes were paid for by earmarked contributions the re-upholstering of the pews, the new microphone system, the statue of Our Lady of Judea, etc.. The new church roof came from Sandy insurance. There has been a lot of unseen volunteer work repairing our heating system, our electrical system, etc.. These volunteers have saved us at least $100,000 with their time and talent. We also have received large grants from the diocese to turn around the financial situation in the school thanks to the Diocesan Appeal. I expect in the next few years that the school will be able to sustain itself. But we will have to pay $110,000 for the new roof on the old section of the school. This work had to be done because of water leaks in classrooms. This repair was sped up by a partial collapse of a classroom ceiling during one of those snow storms last winter. In making these repairs now, we saved the infrastructure of the church and the school from being catastrophically damaged. We will have a peaceful use of the buildings for another twenty years. A lot of other work was done around the parish by volunteers, e.g. the mowing and landscaping. I am grateful for their kindnesses and I hope you will sustain them by keeping them in your prayers. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation "A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them." In today's Gospel parable, this man represents God, and the servants represent us. The story makes a clear point about the importance of putting the gifts God has given us to good use. Unlike the first two servants, the third servant chose not to make a return on his "talent." Thus we can understand the frustration of the master. He trusted this servant, and the fellow let him down. Remember, this all began with an act of trust when the master handed over care of his things. The fact is that the third servant did not take good care of what he was given. What have we been given? Some gifts from God we all share in common: life and salvation. But others differ from person to person. We each have our own set of "talents": our personal skills, our material blessings, our education, family background, and so on. Some have more, and some have fewer. But the point is that we are called to make the most of what we have, whatever that may be. Perhaps the starting point for making a return on God's investment in us is to recognize that what we have is really his! In a sense, our gifts and skills, even our lives, are all "on loan" from God. He is generous in sharing his life and his blessings with us. And, like the parable's master, he is quick to praise and reward our efforts. But when we choose to be "wicked, lazy" servants, taking everything for granted and not using our gifts for God's glory, then "even what [we have] will be taken away." What we bury underground is as good as gone. So let's bring our gifts into the light of day by sharing them with others and making the best possible use of all we've received.

If you any questions please Chickie at Our Lady s Rosary Making We wanted to express our most sincere appreciation to all those who have helped with Rosary making. We just sent 350 rosaries to a Carmelite monastery in Spain, and from there many of our rosaries will be heading to Africa with a Carmelite sister who will be traveling there in late November. We have begun making rosaries for an orphanage in India. We meet on Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 in the school cafeteria if you would like to join us.
