3 Pastor s Notes Jeremiah tells us of the pain of his vocational calling in what is known as his confessions. This reading is one of five laments. On the surface you would think that Jeremiah is in despair, but he is much like Job. Being God s servant, he is running into very dangerous misfortunes. Jeremiah is called to be a religious leader by God and not by man. It is his vocation in life. Each of us is also called to a vocation such as being a religious, married, a priest or a single person. Only by serving in this capacity, that God has ordained for us, will we ever experience happiness. It is almost as if we are compelled into this calling. Further, we are still called to be a Catholic who prays and believes, "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We do not have to accept our vocation or doing God s will. We can fight it or reject it, but we will never have peace of mind if we choose our own path. Jeremiah knows this. He is compelled by God to teach God's law, which few are following, and he is being mocked and scorned. God tells him to tell his people to expect disaster for not following His Word. Interestingly the people of Jeremiah s time are no different than today s. Jeremiah s people were not observing the Sabbath, worshiping false gods, and offering their children as burnt offerings to the gods. The chief of police in temple strikes him and imprisons him. Jeremiah s sufferings are so severe that he wishes that he was never born. Paul tells us the same message in a different way, the example of Christ. We must not conform to secular ways, but rather align ourselves with Christ. Face it, at times it really hurts, but instead of moping we can transform that pain through the Cross and make it a sacrifice holy and acceptable to God. Something that will do some good for ourselves and for others too. As strange as this may sound, Paul aptly called it being "fools for Christ." The whole idea of the Cross is immediately repulsive to us. Look at poor Peter. For an impulsive man, he suffered a lot from a lack of self-discipline, a common malady of our time too. But self-discipline, if acquired, can solve many problems in the world today. Jesus does not call us to repress our impulses, which are of this world, but rather to make a permanent repair of them in the hope of acquiring eternal glory. It is not a complete bitter pill, but if we take to heart His horrible death for each and everyone of us, we can chose to die with Him as we acquire the virtues necessary to get into heaven. When we were conceived, God gave us weaknesses to not only humble us, but to make us acquire the things needed to attain Eternal Life if only we would make it our intention. If we do not deny ourselves, we opt away from Jesus and this can be catastrophic. When you consider that our parish has 4,200 families and only between 1,500 and 2,000 attend Sunday Mass, many of our able bodied men, women and children may not attain Eternal Life. While I was away, many horrible things happened here in our nation. First of all was that storm in the South. Many people are attributing it to global warming, but no one is seeing it as a message from God about waste. The actions in Charlottesville reflect the never ending disregard to respect human life. Many people still think they can purify God s creation by denying personhood, whether in the womb or in old age. Oddly, like pornography, we still defend the rights of these people to inflict violence in our country, killing our nation s spiritual fiber. Jesus teaches us that hatred is a sin, a fatal sin, that keeps us from Heaven. But that is religion, which now does not enter into our political sphere. Ever since the politicians took over our schools with their secular version of religion, we seem to be producing more hatred. Just say no cannot replace love your neighbor who is made in the image and likeness of God. The political solution to call things hate crimes is just another way of government legislating secular morality and creating another way for the many unemployed lawyers to make a buck. It has not done anything constructive to take hate out of American hearts in Charlottesville. Only our cooperation with God can do that. Having been personally injured by terrorists, I do have an interest in protecting our boarders, but if the wall is the solution, why do we not also build a wall up on the Canadian border. Because they are white? Well, the people who harmed me looked white to me. Remember capitalism without a heart is as lethal as socialism. As we continue to destroy the middle class, we are going to be left with just the rich and the poor. The rich will continue to build walls around their estates and hire body guards, while the poor, with their secular education, will just generate more jealousy and hate which will reduce us to more political instability. That is exactly how Hitler got his start. Some advise: Our Lady at Fatima urged us to say a Rosary every day to avert the Second World War. We did not do it and look what happened. Her message is still the same. Also, she showed the three little children hell. Their reaction was not to say they deserved what they got, but rather they began to make great sacrifices of self-discipline to atone for their sinfulness and keep them out of such a horrible eternal place.
